Owner description: Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins reflect nearly one thousand years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. Rievaulx was one of the first Cistercian abbeys to be founded in England in around 1130, and after the dissolution, became the centre of commercial activity for many years. The abbey forge was used to set up an ironworks on the site. The abbey then entered its Romantic period when its picturesque ruins became a beacon for poets, painters, and scholars. It was one of the first major ruins to be conserved by the Office of Works (ancestor of English Heritage) in 1917.

“Very interesting place, shame about the staff”

Nice place to visit and learn all about the Cistercian monks that lived and worked here. English Heritage staff however not very nice. Overpriced to get in and no family tickets. What a shame.

Hi,
We're happy to hear you enjoyed your visit to us and are sorry to hear you feel the staff here are "not very nice." Unfortunately without any additional information from yourself a to why you feel this way we are unable to respond further to your comment. We would like to point out that the vast majority of our visitors appreciate the friendly and personal service they receive from our staff and we have just been awarded a "Certificate of Excellence 2014" from Tripadvisor on the basis of reviews from our visitors, due in no small part to the excellent service visitors receive from our staff when they visit us.
Our pricing levels are structured in comparison to other comparable historic sites and all profits from admission are used to protect this and other historic monuments. In addition our annual membership price for one adult and six children is only £49 and for two adults and up to 12 children is only £86. This allows a whole years admission to Rievaulx and over 400 other historic sites and we believe this represents excellent value for money.
We hope to see you soon.

“Possible the best ruins in the country, worth every penny.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2014

I am a member of English Heritage therefore have seen a large selection of the castle ruins they look after. I enjoyed these ruins the best. There is something extra magical about abbey ruins as opposed to castles. The amount of abbey left gives you a great insight in to what it would have been like and the tall walls and archers are mesmerising. A overly place to walk around on a sunny day and there is also a great little museum on site to explain about a monks working day. We visited during the Easter bank holiday and they also had a fantastic bird of Prey demonstration on. May people place Whitby abbey about Rievaulx Abbey but I would choose this one every time.

“Wow”

This little tucked away gem never fails to raise a wow from first time visitors. We went in April mid-week and very quiet, summer probably busier I imagine. Worth an hour of your time.

“Excellent visit - do this and give Whitby a miss!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2014

What can we say? An excellent visit - superb exhibition - well considered and succeeds in aiming at adults and children alike without being patronising.
Beautifully maintained grounds and the ruins themselves are truly awesome - we were surprised that so much was left standing.
Very peaceful when we visited which was a bonus - able to walk around and feel you had the place to yourself.
