Owner description: Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins reflect nearly one thousand years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. Rievaulx was one of the first Cistercian abbeys to be founded in England in around 1130, and after the dissolution, became the centre of commercial activity for many years. The abbey forge was used to set up an ironworks on the site. The abbey then entered its Romantic period when its picturesque ruins became a beacon for poets, painters, and scholars. It was one of the first major ruins to be conserved by the Office of Works (ancestor of English Heritage) in 1917.

Walked to Rievaulx Abbey from Helmsley. Very nice walk through marked paths in the woods. Worth the trip as the Abbey is impressive and the set-up by English Heritage well thought through. Pleasant lunch too.

These are very extensive and well preserved ruins of the abbey. Not only are the ruins interesting but there is a good museum telling the story of this abbey and monastic life and a very interesting (and free) audio tour. Surprisingly, for such an out-of-the-way location, there is a pleasant cafe with a good choice of food and drink. It's well worth visiting the Abbey and spending some time wandering round - and then having food and drink in the cafe.

We enjoyed a really good audio-guide and found the museum set the scene very well. The setting is beautiful, clearly this a great base for serious walking

A beautiful abbey tucked away in a peaceful little valley. The Rievaulx Abbey is not to be missed if you are visiting North Yorkshire.

Really nice place just to wander through the Abbey and listen to the history of the place, visit the museum to get the history of the Abbey, the staff who greet you when you enter are very helpful and will have a chat with you, the cafe we only had a coffee and scone but it was really nice.
