Owner description: Hidden in the deep River Rye valley, the beautiful and tranquil abbey ruins reflect nearly one thousand years of spiritual, commercial and Romantic history. Rievaulx was one of the first Cistercian abbeys to be founded in England in around 1130, and after the dissolution, became the centre of commercial activity for many years. The abbey forge was used to set up an ironworks on the site. The abbey then entered its Romantic period when its picturesque ruins became a beacon for poets, painters, and scholars. It was one of the first major ruins to be conserved by the Office of Works (ancestor of English Heritage) in 1917.

“Beautiful abbey ruins”
Reviewed May 6, 2013

Medieval murder mystery added to the enjoyment of our visit to Rievaulx Abbey. The ruins are well worth exploring. The view from the road hides the vast array of the majesty that was once Rievaulx Abbey. This English Heritage property includes an information centre, well stocked cafe and gift shop. There is a charge for parking but the day we visited there was a free car park lower down the road. Enjoyed and will return. Highly recommend.

“Beautiful ruins that young children will love to explore”
Reviewed May 5, 2013

Took my family here as it had been personally recommended to me but was not sure if it would be ok for my two young daughters aged 2 & 5. I'm happy to say they loved exploring the ruins and just running about in the wide open spaces. The day we visited there was also a medieval murder mystery event so that too helped maintain the interest levels and the good weather.

There's a nice little cafe if you don't bring your own food but the grounds are also ideal for a family picnic.

“Gorgeous”

I loved it. It's absolutely gorgeous. I regret that the audio guides are not free though; it seems a bit mean to charge extra for them.

Hi,
We're not sure if you have Rievaulx confused with somewhere else as our audiotour is completely free for all visitors to use. We're glad you enjoyed your visit here.

“Rievaulx visits Rievaulx!”
Reviewed April 19, 2013

Take one rescue chocolate labrador with a boring name! Rename it after your favourite Abbey, vets never forget him now! Special place to us this Abbey, always beautiful, always inspiring and we try to visit at least once a year.
Substantial ruins of Benedictine Abbey in a glorious setting, plenty of information in the exhibition, a really good free audio guide. Picnic potential all over the site, but this time we had lunch in the tea rooms and can highly recommend the Veggie Welsh Rarebit! Local visitors while we sat outside eating our lunch included two hens from nearby farm, and a lone patterdale terrier who knew his way around! Our own dogs were made most welcome.
The shop is excellent, plenty of gifts and books, toys for children. Staff very nice and helpful.
Car park is pay and display to deter walkers from parking hours and taking up spaces, and full charge is refunded for visitors to Abbey. EH members free.
We would recommend walking from Helmsley to Abbey if time and fitness allow, about a 4 mile return walk with some steep bits but lovely scenery. There is a Moors bus if required.
All in all, if visiting Yorkshire and love history, then this is a must see venue.
