We were completing the Cleveland Way between Sutton Bank and Helmsley on a very snowy January day and decided to take the slight detour to Rievaulx - we were so glad that we did! Not only were we welcomed most warmly and in spite of problems with the gas supple, supplied with bowls of excellent hot soup in the cafe, but were the only visitors to the abbey. The paths were not all accessible because of the snow, but the experience of walking aound the abbey in the snowy silence was unforgettable.
