We were staying locally & decided to investigate the Castle. £5 to get in is a lot for a ruined castle, but there is quite a bit to see when you get there.

This was a really interesting site, with the medieval castle and subsequent Elizabethan Manor House. Some fascinating exhibits. A very peaceful place for a picnic.-

visited on a Monday so it was very quiet. A nice welcome from the man on the entry. We took advantage of the free audio guide which was great. The castle had plenty of information boards. The Tudor house was very interesting with plenty of objects to view. The gift shop was well stocked. No car park but a pay and display one nearby. Well worth a visit.

I first visited Helmsley Castle a couple of years ago and have returned several times. The castle is ruinous, but far more extensive than it appears from afar. It's real charm is the multi-phasic nature of the site. The elegance of the Tudor mansion stands in stark contrast to the grim scars of the civil war borne by the East Tower. The impressive medieval fortifications have become a stunning, romantic ruin that I can't recommend enough. A day out at Helmsley Castle is made all the better by the ever friendly and knowledgable staff, a well stocked shop and the site's location in a lovely town centre.
A must for anyone with an interest in history.

We spontaneously visited Helmsley Castle as we were passing through. As English Heritage members, we get in free. If not, you have to pay £5 which seems a bit steep.

The castle is ruined but it looks pretty spectacular, so take your camera! It's also a nice place to relax with a book if the weather is good.

There is an English Heritage gift shop which sells the usual souvenirs.
