“Lovely ruins in great location”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 2, 2013

We spontaneously visited Helmsley Castle as we were passing through. As English Heritage members, we get in free. If not, you have to pay £5 which seems a bit steep.

The castle is ruined but it looks pretty spectacular, so take your camera! It's also a nice place to relax with a book if the weather is good.

There is an English Heritage gift shop which sells the usual souvenirs.

“enjoyable visit”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

The castle is much bigger than first appears and the audio tour very informative with options for more information if required. The English Heritage visitor centre had a good and varied supply of goods for sale and the staff were friendly and helpful.

“Lovely ruin in charming location”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 16, 2013

Took a trip into Helmsley town which is lovely place in itself to visit and decided to visit the castle. Yes as someone else put it Its only a ruin but gives you a great feel for what it was like in the past and plenty of information available to help you understand just how big it was. Also affords you a good view over the walled Garden and local area.
Certainly well worth and hour of your time if you are in the area.

“It looks good, but it’s just a ruin.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 10, 2013

Helmsley Castle looks great from the Walled Garden, but for me, getting up close and personal to the castle doesn't do much for me. It looks good, but it’s just a ruin, so there’s not too much to see. OK there are a couple of exhibitions, and lots of wide open spaces, but not enough to keep me interested.
There is a souvenir shop on site, but no tea rooms.
Save your money and go to The Walled Garden instead, where you get terrific views of the castle.

“Marvellous”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 5, 2013 via mobile

This is a very fascinating and interesting Norman castle - wonderfulyl looked after by English Heritage whose staff were very helpful . The castle is really worth a visit as so much of it remains in good condition . The parkland surroundings are very beautiful .
There are very well presented relics and artefacts on display showing how the castle was built and developed and how it was affected by the Civil War .
It is a large site and needs at least 2 to 3 hours to do it justice .
