Really enjoyed exploring the castle ruins and that area that had been restored. Very good interpretation panels which gave a goo impression of how the feature might have been in the past. Very good views from the castle of the surrounding areas. I had a very short time for my visit and would easily have spent 2-3 hours. Very helpful staff in the visitors centre.

Thank fraser C

My partner, granddaughter and myself love looking round old ruined castles and this one didn't disappoint us. The rooms were lovely and you can imagine yourself living in a castle. We walked around the perimeter on the top of the moat. The outside of the castle was as beautiful as the inside.. Our next trip will be the near by Rievaulx abbey.

As always English heritage score 10/10 for making history come alive. Helmsley castle is adjacent to the town and provides a complete day out. We went on a Friday which is market day. A traditional market square that has been the home of a market for centuries. The parking availability was very limited because the market takes up a lot of the car parking space and the car park next to the castle was full as well. Thought we might have to turn round and leave but we found parking space on a town street and had to walk in. So go early on Fridays or leave it for another day is our advice.

Castle is great to visit. Steeped in history and the audio handsets are a real boon to the visit. Lovely site to walk around especially in the sun! a very enjoyable morning.

We walked up to Helmsley Castle as an afterthought having already explored the village of Helmsley. It does not take long to walk up to from the short stay car park at the centre of the village (@5min), but the long stay car park is conveniently next door to the castle itself. There is a visitors centre with toilet facilities at the entrance to the castle and then a short walk to a model of the castle. As indicated by the model castle there is much more here than meets the eye and you should allow time to explore all the different elements that reveal themselves as you walk around. The Castle itself is approached via a clear path and once again the free audio commentry gives excellent information as you walk around. There are some steep drops and uneven steps around the ruins and small children need to be watched but all in all this was a fascinating visit - worthy of an hour or so whilst visiting the village. For another dose of local history which has national significance I recommend nearby Rievaulx Abbey which is also English Heritage.

My family and I were slightly disappointed to learn that the fabulous gardens seen from the castle windows do not in fact belong to the castle grounds and are a seperate entity for which you would have to pay.
