The Vine House Cafe
Ranked #21 of 37 Restaurants in Helmsley
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: $10 - $13
Cuisines: Italian, Mediterranean
Description: PLEASE NOTE THIS CAFE HAS RECENTLY CHANGED HANDS.....DO COME AND TRY US We have recently taken over the helm at The Vine House Cafe at Helmsley Walled Garden. Using produce from the Walled Garden where possible as well as meat and vegetables from local suppliers we offer beautifully presented fresh food (vegetarian meals always available), along with homemade cakes and seriously good coffees. As well as traditional items such as Yorkshire platter, ham sandwiches and homemade soups we also have a constantly changing specials board with choices such as: Harissa marinated Prawn Platter. Melon, Feta, Chilli and Pomegranate Platter. Pasta Alla Puttonesca Tacos de Pollo The cafe is housed in Victorian Glass Houses with vines running through it and has a large outside area with tables and seating so you can sit back and enjoy views of the gardens along with Helmsley Castle. It is one of Helmsley's best kept secrets, just a 5 minute walk from the centre of town. There is disabled parking to the rear and the cafe along with The Walled Garden itself is wheelchair friendly. We are lucky to have lots of space so pushchairs are not a problem and we are dog friendly. (We usually have a dog biscuit on hand to keep the boss happy!) Our stunning venue can be hired after 6pm for private events and parties. Just call to discuss your requirements.

“Love the Vinehouse Cafe”
Reviewed August 6, 2014

I kept hearing people raving about the food at the Vinehouse cafe so I decided to take my family when my sister in law visited from NY a few weeks ago. She is a chef and quite difficult to please. We had different dishes and they were all superbly cooked, the taste of intelligent, modern food, which fuses flavours from around the world, yet it is simple and beautifully presented. Sitting in the garden adds to the charm. Despite being full, we had to try the cakes, which were delicious. I went back yesterday with my parents, and we loved it. Worth the drive, I can't wait to visit again. The stuff are helpful and friendly. Try the citrus cordial.

“Excellent Lunch”
Reviewed July 31, 2014

We'd visited before for tea and cake but never for lunch. So on a day out in Helmsley including a few hours at the International Centre for Birds of Prey at Duncombe Park we broke for lunch at the Vinehouse Cafe. It's not 100% vegetarian anymore but has it's roots in fabulous vegetarian cuisine.
As for the rest of Helmsley, it's not cheap but it does represent great value for money. We were lucky enough to bump into friends so had a grand lunch with lovely company. The service is impeccable and the food really tasty. Our kids loved their chunky bread and jam whilst we had the chorizo rolls and salad. Our friends had a salad and another sandwich which looked just as good. We will be back!

“The best ice cream!”
Reviewed July 21, 2014

We called in after a long walk for a casual drink and ice cream. My husband declared that it was the best ice cream he has ever eaten ( and he has eaten quite a few over the years!)

“Super food”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

Decided to have lunch here after visiting the Walled Garden and certainly weren't disappointed. There is plenty of indoor seating beneath the swelling grapes but we ate outside as the day was very warm. The waitress was very pleasant and helpful. Although the menu is not extensive there is enough choice for lunch. The food is imaginative, very tasty, well presented and very reasonably priced. Generous pots of tea!Cake and scones also available but we didn't sample them (looked delicious!)! Locally sourced ingredients are used where possible. Would visit again if in Helmsley.

“Exceptional food, great location”
Reviewed June 29, 2014

Went to visit the walled garden at Helmsley and stopped into the Vinehouse first for lunch. I'm not a veggie but my other half is so I happily eat vegetarian food a lot of the time. We ordered the mixed salad plate (aubergine, beetroot and courgette today although this probably varies) with flat bread and baba ganoush, and the fetuccine with fresh broad beans and peas (presumably from the garden) to share and loved, loved, loved them both. A real treat for vegetarian and non vegetarian alike. The setting (we ate indoors as not too warm, but plenty of outside seating too) with the vines growing over our heads was lovely too, and a walk round the walled garden afterwards was well worth the money (especially as the ticket is valid for a year). Will be back asap!
