Owner description: Located in the village of Helmsley, visit the Rievaulx Abbey and its two 18th-century temples, one of which is the splendid Ionic Temple with its intricate ceiling paintings and 17th-century furniture.

Created in the 18th century for his friends by the heir to the Helmsley estate, as an enhancement to their dining experience, the wide lawn of the long serpentine terrace, stopped at each end with a classical temple, looks down the hill, through artful gaps in the woodland, on the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey. And it's a great place for a picnic, too.

To be honest we didn't intend to go here, but called in after being at Rievaulx Abbey. In honesty there isn't too much to it, but there is a nice walk in the woods and the natural play area (albeit fairly small) is great - even for adults!
The kids trail was a great idea and we had lots of fun doing that, and the views from the terrace are fantastic.

An unusual attraction consisting of a woodland walk; 2 Georgian "temple" buildings; and a lawn garden with views over Rievaulx Abbey.

Lovely way to spend an hour or so. I've seen more that enough little temples but the views of the Abbey through the cuts in the trees were spectacular. Another reviewer did not seem to realise that the cuts were there by design, not accident, and framed the ruins beautifully. I'm glad we chose the terrace over a visit to the Abbey as you could see it perfectly and did not have to get a crick in the neck while doing so.

Although the terraces and Abbey are separate attractions in different hands, they should be seen together as they are inextricably linked - the abbey was restored to provide a vista from the terraces (and presumably the terraces were constructed because views of the abbey could be contrived). Try to time a visit to be there between 3 and 3:30 when the the Ionic Temple is open, and see what a summer house can be!
