Helmsley is a great little market town. Full of character and style. The Black Swan (OK it's really the Mucky Duck) is perfectly placed on the central square and substantially adds to the chacter of the town.
Staff were very friendly and helpful, the breakfast was good and the old part of the hotel relaxing and atmospheric adjoining a lovely enclosed garden.
We stayed in a classic room which means we weren't in the old part of the hotel but in the much newer extension. It was fine and comfortable but if you want old and characterful ask for a feature room.
It's not cheap but it is a great place to stay for a treat

Room Tip: If you choose a "classic" avoid ground floor and you will get a much better view of the g...

We visited the Black Swan with our parents for a two night break in March which everyone found wonderful. Stayed many times over the years and it never disappoints.

The Hotel is a great place to be, especially in winter. Sat next to one of the fires with a pint and wondering how many people have done exactly the same during the course of the last five centuries. Magic.

The food is as good as it's ever been here and stands up well to the Star in Harome, having dined there the previous night. I think it's also far better in my experience than their near neighbours, the Feversham Arms.

The staff are all efficient, thoroughly engaging and eager to help.

The only slight negative, the bathroom in our room being just a little bit tired.

Went for a mid week break with my friend and her dog to the black swan. We had an offer that included afternoon tea, dinner and bed and breakfast. The atmosphere was relaxed and the food was excellent, I will be returning with my husband very soon and I'm sure many more times in the future.

We had this on our list of places to visit for some time.

We stayed overnight on the Friday with afternoon tea as well as evening meal and breakfast.

Although we did enjoy it did not maybe wow us in a way we had hoped. Drinks in particular were expensive with wine starting at just under £20 per bottle.

Good but would not rush back.

This is such a fantastic deal. £98 per person for an overnight stay which included half a bottle of champagne in the room on arrival, six course tasting menu with paired wine and breakfast!

The food is as good as anywhere we've eaten around the world. I had the pescatarian option which was very well catered for. Each course was original and flavoursome. Michelin star standard! Service was also very good.

We stayed in a superior room (42) which was very comfortable with a king sized bed and large bathroom. Situated towards the back of the hotel it was also very tranquil.

We will definitely return and will recommend to family and friends.

We stayed in January 2014 - a well deserved break after a hectic few months at work.
On arrival pulled up outside, as the car park wasn't clearly signposted (it's round the back) and we were offered help with our luggage which was nice. Even though we arrived early, our room was ready which was great-we were ready to just chill.
We were pleasantly surprised by our room, which was very quirky - uneven floors and the like, which was fab-it certainly had history! The bathroom was a huge let down - it was very dated, and I'll say more about it later.
The room came with a massive and amazingly comfy bed - we both slept like logs (which is unusual for us) . There was a chess set in the room, comfy chairs, good tv. We struggled to fine the tea and coffee tray at first-it was in a cupboard in the little entrance hall bit of our room. We have been upgraded from the standard room, which was a lovely surprise, but didn't get the perks of the upgrade such as bathrobes - not sure if this was deliberate or was just missed.
We took a bar meal in the afternoon which was nice. We sat in a lounge area near the fire. It was really lovely on such a cold day, and the service was great. We were a little put off by the fact that the couple sat on the sofas opposite had a dog with them - whilst we like dogs, and it was a lovely one, not really appropriate where food is being served.
We had a fish & chips and a smoked salmon sandwich - my only complaint being that it came on a different coloured bread to what I ordered-an easy mistake though.
After a relaxing afternoon, we went to our room to get ready for dinner, all went fine until I went into the shower. After 10 minutes I still wasn't getting any hot water - it wasn't even peak time of getting ready for dinner! Eventually the hot water came through, and boy was it hot-I came out of the shower red raw. I had gone from being absolutely freezing to scorching - needs some serious attention. The bathroom really felt very dated, very 2-3 star and really let the room down.
We went for pre dinner drinks which we ordered prior to being presented with the menu - once we were shown the menu with the option of beverage pairing there was no question about our choice-10 course tasting menu with beverage pairing. We just wish we had been presented with this prior to ordering pre dinner drinks as we wouldn't have had them (a large glass of red followed by lots of random drinks - we felt it the next morning!!) - a suggestion perhaps to have had a pre dinner drink included within the beverage pairing...?
Dinner was amazing - as was the beverage pairing - cream soda brought back so many memories! The chef really is fantastic, and they certainly deserve the 3 rosettes they just received. This was the highlight of our stay. Be warned - don't eat mid afternoon or drink any other booze - it's quite hard going and my dress felt somewhat tight by the end!!
On return to our room, we also hadn't received evening turndown, which was a disappointment.
Breakfast the next morning was ok at most-certainly not of the same standard as dinner the night prior! They forgot to bring our toast too, when we really could have done with stodge after the night prior.
The other let down for us was we didn't know before we arrived that for (I think) £25 you can use the spa at the neighbouring feversham arms hotel - so we didn't bring our 'kit'

We will return, and just hope they rectify these little niggles.

We have previously visited the black swan for afternoon tea, which was wonderful.

I must note we got a cracking deal of £209 inc the 10 course tasting menu - we just had to pay for the wine on top.
