This is an Inn in a lovely Yorkshire town, but the accommodation is average at best. We paid a special rate of £140 for B and B . The room was tiny and the bed virtually filled it, so that there was a bedside table on one side only. I have stayed on Travelodges with more room.
To be sure the location is good, right in the centre of Hesley, and there is a restaurant which I understand is good, but this does not justify such inflated prices.
Please do visit Helmesly, in particular enjoy the gathering of motorcycles every weekend, but don't pay to stay at the Black Swan.

Our group of ten enjoyed an excellent celebration lunch here a couple of weekends ago. We could not fault the food and service.

However, one of our group was disabled (wheelchair-bound). Although this hotel claims to be wheelchair accessible, there is no dedicated disabled toilet. When the lady concerned needed the loo, her husband asked at Reception where the disabled toilet was and was told "In the Ladies". This could only be accessed via a step which he found difficult to negotiate with the chair (and he has a serious heart condition). Once inside, there was no room to turn the wheelchair and, because it was a "normal" Ladies toilet with no hand rails etc., he had to ask other ladies from our group to help. This was distressing for the disabled lady. My wife, who works with disabled people, could not believe that this was the only facility available and went to check again at Reception, only to be told that it was correct.

At the end of the meal, the lady needed the loo again before her long journey home. Needless to say, she didn't want to have the same experience, so her husband had to go into the town to find a "real" disabled toilet, then return to pick her up and drive to it.

This is 2013 - surely somewhere like the Black Swan should have better facilities for those in wheelchairs. If not, they should not claim to be wheelchair accessible.

Called in for coffee and sandwiches at lunch time. Sat in the lounge with our dogs and were made to feel very welcome. One of the waiters asked whether we needed water for the dogs and brought back a dish of water, chilled with ice cubes! The staff were very attentive and the food was excellent.

A super place for a romantics weekend away, or a group celebration a special birthday. We've stayed for my dads 60th with 30 people, and again for my mum's with just 12 of us - the staff are so keen to please and excellent at their respective parts. The bar manager knows his wines, the restaurant staff are well informed by the chef about menu choices. Afternoon tea is well worth the luxury price.

This is a lovely hotel, the staff are outstanding. The room while needing a lick of paint is well presented, the bedding is of a high quality and the pillows are fantastic, I really wanted to take one home. The bathroom is well appointed with good complimentary toiletries and good quality towels. The food is also outstanding and the cooked breakfast selection is good while the buffet choices were a little disappointing. Helmsley itself is a nice quaint village with some interesting shops and boutiques. The main attraction is of course the country side with is breathtaking. I was there for a wedding which was fantastic and everything was done well.
