“25 years of wedded bliss.”
Reviewed April 20, 2013

We had a lovely 2 night break at The Black Swan for our 25th wedding anniversary. We had a fabulous room at the top of the hotel with a window seat overlooking the market squre which i made great use of watching the world go by. The room was a delight, beautifully appointed with thick fluffy robes, slippers and Molton Brown toiletries. The food was exceptional, delicious and served by lovely staff. Would definitely go back again.

Room Tip: Pick a room at the front.

First of all let me adjust the overall rating which I have given as Very Good. I would have to say that our visit was certainly better than average but I would not really go as far as to rate it, "very good". We have visited the Black Swan some eight or nine times in the past 10 years (which incidently it would be a nice touch to have acknowledged upon arrival. I don't want a fan fare but it would at least be nice not to be asked if we had stayed at the hotel before) and can honestly say we have never had a bad experience. On our latest visit, which we booked as a result of the hotel emailing details of a special offer, we went for the B/B and evening meal at £190. Upon arrival we were booked in by a very friendly member of staff and told that we had been given an upgrade to a feature room which was a nice supprise but that it was not quite ready. We had arrived early anyway so had no complaints about waiting but upon our return were met by another member of staff who I don't think knew about the upgrade as I am sure we ended up being given a standard room. Room 32? Room 32 is really very nice, beautifully clean, well fitted out and with views onto the rear garden but little touches like dressing gowns are expected for a room of that price. We had been looking forward to our evening meal and we were not disapointed. The food was excellent and the restaurant staff friendly, professional and very knowledgable about what they were serving. On occasions in the past we have stayed at the Black Swan but eaten at the famous Star Inn at Harome some 10 minutes drive away. However there is less and less reason to do that when the quality of food served at the Black Swan is as good as this. The staff serving breakfast the next day were equally as attentive and efficient as their evening collegues and with just the right degree of morning friendliness. I opted for the full English which was excellent but had to be because the buffet table was disapointing bordering even on meager. No cold meats, cheeses etc..
Reading back over this review I feel I may have been a little nit picky because we had a very nice time and will certainly stay here again but there is just one or two niggles that are not caused by the staff or the food but perhaps by a lack of attention to detail.

In a nutshell we would highly recommend the restaurant (that bit gets a 5 star rating) and would most definitely eat here again, but we would stay elsewhere.

Stayed one night with evening meal. Food really first rate and we had an excellent evening meal. Hotel, for us, just not good enough - especially for the price. Room (we had king size superior) was spacious and bed comfy but furnishings slightly tatty and worn. Also needed a bit of a proper clean (eg. very dusty coffee table, lots of hairs on armchair). Bathroom large but poor quality and well overdue a refurb. (shower head loose not fixed to wall, bath panels peeling from damp due to poor fitting shower door, enamel bath chipped, water pours onto floor from poor fitting shower door, patched up tiling and so on). Overall there's no one major fault but collectively the place is below par - especially for just under £200 a room. We mentioned the poor state of the bathroom when checking out and were told the rooms are due to be refitted - but staff not clear when so would check before booking.

We wouldn't stay here again as it looks like there's planty of good options in the area and we'd try somewhere else. But we would without hesitation eat here again - truly great food.

We arrived on Saturday 13/04/13 for an evening's dinner bed and breakfast.

Having paid £303.00 for the privilege we we're expecting it to be a rather special.

On arrival at the hotel it is clear that the communal areas are very dated, not pleasant 'olde worlde' more Faulty Towers.

We were then given the key to our room, number 43, which was a long walk down a never ending corridor of steps and doors. On reaching the room I'd geared myself up for dated decor (which it was) although it was large and pleasant enough.

The first problem arose when my girlfriend attempted to have a shower prior to our evening meal. The bathroom was very very dated (1980's), the shower didn't work at all. We called reception who then sent up the resident Dog's body just to insult our intelligence by confirming what we had already concluded, the shower was broken.

So, we were then shown to another room across the corridor, Number 40 which was almost half the size of the first room and immediately noticed it was very hot, I asked reception how to rectify this and they said "turn down the radiator thermostat", this would've been helpful however the radiator valve had been removed, so we were provided with a noisy fan!

All went relatively smoothly then, dinner was enjoyable and the service was sufficiently attentive followed by a drink in the bar and a live 'Rat Pack' singer.

The next morning, I attempted to shower only to find there was no hot water, so a cold shower it was, this actually helped to combat the temperature of the bedroom.

My advice would be, do NOT stay here unless you get a very very good deal. It may be worth £100 dinner, bed and breakfast but certainly not £303!

We went to celebrate a birthday using a gift voucher to cover most of the cost. The hotel was very helpful when making the booking, welcoming on arrival and throughout the 24 hour stay.
The dinner was excellent, with food both looking and tasting marvellous. The wine list is extensive but pricey and the first choice wine had all been consumed! The second choice proved very acceptable.
The weather was still cold but the bedroom radiator had not been turned on. However it has a thermostatic control valve which worked properly (see yorkshiretraveller16) and having gone out for a walk round town followed by a promptly served tea with especially tasty parkin, the room was fine.

Room Tip: There is a small garden with rooms overlooking it. This was quiet, but the rooms are in the modern...

We use this hotel as a base to walk. The staff are very friendly, the food is most excellent and faultless. We were made very welcome and nothing was too much trouble. Thoroughly recommended and will use it again.

We have stayed at the Black Swan a couple of times and been to the tea shop on several occasions. Our one night stay this year was on a dinner, bed and breakfast basis and the food was an absolute highlight. The room was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The bedroom area looked to have been recently redecorated and although the bathroom had been done less recently it was clean and perfectly serviceable with both bath and shower options. Hot water was very hot and plentiful. The lounge and dining areas are very nicely decorated and the service generally first class throughout, although we did have an issue with the tea room the following day. The restaurant food was quite simply excellent, with cooking at a level we rarely find in hotels, even good ones.
Our one problem was with our afternoon tea the following day. We booked a table for 3pm in the main hotel (we were seated in the bar area) and the service was an absolute catalogue of failures. The list of service we didn't get would fill a book. Nobody came to take our order, we didn't get so much as a cup of tea until the bar manager chased it up on our behalf, when we eventually did it was the wrong sort. When the food finally arrived at 4pm for a 3pm booking the tea had gone cold and the fresh we ordered didn't arrive until after a further intervention by the bar manager, by which time my husband had walked to the tea shop to chase it up himself. The bar manager was clearly mortified and did all he could to resolve the problems but he was very busy himself as the bar was quite full and of course it wasn't his role to serve the tea in a timely manner or make sure we had what we actually ordered. The problem was clearly that being the Easter weekend and a sunny afternoon the tea shop was overwhelmed with customers. We would have understood that and been sympathetic had someone from the tea room come over, explained it to us and given an accurate idea of waiting times. None of that happened and although it wasn't a major problem to wait we did have quite a long drive home and hadn't anticipated being kept waiting an hour when we had gone to the trouble of booking a table. Fortunately I can report that the tea itself when it finally came was superb so at least it was worth waiting for. The bar manager was full of apologies when we outlined the full experience before we left. The apology was appreciated, although I do think that it would have been appropriate to have made a deduction from the bill in recognition of just how far short the service had fallen. I don't think that possibility even occurred to him and it may well have been outside his scope, but if that is so it shouldn't have been, particularly in an establishment which justifiably prides itself on the excellence of its service.
Anyway, with the exception of the tea room service, everything was close to perfect and we will certainly be returning.
