The Black Swan has the most attentive staff who were not just polite; but seemed to actually care about us...one member of staff even went to the lengths of getting me a cloth (without asking) to clean my laptop screen???!! NOTHING was too much trouble for the completely dedicated staff. I have to mention Cat and Zoltan (I don't recall the name of the bar manager from Middlesborough but he was an ace cocktail shaker!).....If there is an employee of the month award; they should share it! people who clearly just love doing their job.....and what a place to work. The hotel is stunning; beautiful gardens and rooms are well equipped with Molton Brown bathroom products. wifi was easily accessible (and free), OK, so the room was a wee bit dusty and paintwork could do with touching up - also cooked breakfast was not very fresh, but you know what? it's a fab place. The food is the best I have ever had, please send my thanks to the chef. If you are staying, you HAVE to book in for dinner too. Great for local places of interest; we went to Scarborough which is a great English seaside town. If I could afford it; I would live at the Black Swan! Thank you to the Scottish manager guy and all the staff who made us so comfortable and welcome. We'll be back! PS. the cats are an added bonus.....we named them cat 'a' and cat 'b'! Negative commenters for this wonderful place need to re-assess their values!! We ADORED every second

Room Tip: we stayed in rm 34 which had a lovely view overlooking the beautiful gardens

We stayed here for an anniversary weekend on a bed, breakfast and dinner package deal. We chose one of the more expensive rooms for a special occasion. Room 16 turned out to have a small bedroom and also a very pleasant sitting room overlooking the main square. The food at dinner was absolutely excellent - great tastes and textures and some wonderful blends of ingredients. THe maitre d' was first class especially as we did not like his recommended choice of wine and without any problem, it was changed. The staff in the restaurant and throughout the whole hotel were polite, friendly and very well trained (a bit of a rarity these days I think). The ambience is lovely - open fires, comfortable seating in the lounges and a general olde worlde feel about it - they even played Sinatra in the restaurant - bliss! With the exception of one rude guest who spoke on her mobile phone at dinner (much to the disgust of others as well as us, but not the hotel's fault) this place had no faults - it was worth what we paid, the room was very pleasant and the staff were all excellent from first contact to last. We'll be back!

Room Tip: We paid a little more for the better room and thought it was worth it.

We stayed for 1 night on the October Break deal, which included a 3 course Market Menu and B&B for £149.00 for 2 people, which for the quality of food was outstanding value. There was an extra £10.00 charge for Shula (our dog), but firstly we were surprised they allowed dogs, and then when we arrived in the room there was a bowl with 2 bonio biscuits for her.

The service is the best we have experienced anywhere in the world, they went out of their way to welcome us and Shula, we were able to eat in the bar or lounge area with her, they made a big fuss of her, and everyone seemed to love dogs.

We had a cream tea when we arrived which was delicious, and decided to upgrade to the A la Carte menu for dinner. The choice was varied, and each course was perfectly cooked and presented, and again the service was just the best. Breakfast was equally as good, with a good choice of fruit and pastries, and the cooked food was hot and tastey.

As we had a dog with us they gave us a room very close to the garden, so we could just walk around the corner and let Shula out before bed and in the morning.

I really couldn't fault The Black Swan, all of the staff without exception are chatty, smiling and really go the extra mile, and never once did we feel our dog wasn't as welcome as we were.

Thank you to everyone at the Black Swan, we will return very soon.

I stayed here with my husband for two nights as a little treat without the children. We were very impressed upon arrival at the look of the place and it just got better from there. The staff were extremely welcoming and offered help with our bags. Our room was huge and just gorgeous and really, really comfortable with lots of cushions a sofa and a large bathroom. We had big fluffy towels, toiletries, bath robes, more tea and coffee than we could drink and complimentary mineral water.
We had dinner in the restaurant (daily dinner menu), the food was lovely as was the service (particularly Katie and Stuart). Following a really good sleep, we had breakfast brought to our room (no extra charge) and it was lovely, I had smoked salmon and scrambled eggs which were cooked to perfection and again lots of tea.
Really, I would find it very hard to fault this place, we definitely will go back again, the town of Helmsley is lovely with lots of quaint shops and there are many other places to eat should you want something less formal. Oh, I forgot to mention, my husband had arranged flowers for me at dinner, they smelt lovely and lasted for ages. I would highly recommend the Black Swan to anyone particularly for a treat or romantic break. Saying that I don't think it was at all expensive, when you consider the Novotel in York (for example) charges around £110 for a room £16.95 per person for over cooked breakfast and £8.50 to park, the rooms are non-descript and the beds uncomfortable. The Black Swan charged us £202 including parking, breakfast in bed and a beautiful, comfortable room.

I must confess that this review is a little late in coming as we stayed here quite some time ago (actually before given the date but drop down list is limited to 12 months ago) and I have always meant to provide my feedback. It was cold, dark spring weather when we stayed in lovely romantic Helmsley and the open fires in the little nooks and snugs were particularly welcoming. Staff were great and very friendly especially the charming South African waiter in the evening and the kindly older lady who looked after us at breakfast. Food was exceptionally good as was the wine list. Our room too could not be faulted. All in all an exceptional stay with a very special companion the happy memory of which will remain with me always. Many thanks to all the staff.

Having arrived somewhat late after attending the NYMR 'Railway in Wartime' event, the staff made every effort to welcome us and provide us with some much needed relaxation before heading in for our evening meal.
The restaurant staff were very professional and attentive. The food was beyond excellent and rounded off our day to perfection.
We stayed in one of the newly refurbished rooms which had everything we could wish for. The bed and bedding were extremely comfortable and the bath towels luxurious. We can't wait to visit again.
Thank you for a great stay.

It is so good to find a weekend retreat that does not insist on a two night booking. When trying to escape young children with my husband it is not always possible to find babysitters for a whole weekend! But we could take the dog if we wished!!

This retreat was perfect. A boutique feel, cosy chairs around a log fire, a delightful bedroom over looking the Market Square, a huge double bed with a sumptuous duvet and Molton Brown products in the bathroom.

We enjoyed afternoon tea and were educated by an adorable chap who was very knowledgeable on the different teas and their blends. Pre dinner drinks were served with a selection of canapes. Dinner was good with local market foods, not an extensive menu but that was not a negative as it meant the food was fresh and beautifully presented. Breakfast was perhaps a little disappointing, the full Yorkshire feast, after enjoying such good food the night before - it appeared a little tired.

All the staff were friendly and courteous, not just front of house but the room maids too.

I would definitely recommend to my friends and family and put on our list to revisit - just have to persuade the babysitter!

Room Tip: book a dinner package with your room - excellent value
