“A most delightful afternoon tea”
Reviewed July 23, 2012

We are on a mission to personally eat our way through every afternoon tea in every hotel in the country!

So far the Black Swan is in our opinion second only to The Dorchester, but considering the huge price difference, it may just sneak first place for overall marks.

We reserved a table and were given a lovely window table. The staff were friendly, courteous and very efficient and couldn't do enough for us. The sandwiches were quintessentially English, egg, salmon, cheese etc. then there were two scones each with cream and jam, followed by their grand finale, five glorious, individual, luscious, beautiful, tasty, to die for cakes!

There was a wonderful collection of teas and coffees and all this for £17.95 each, bargain!

A birthday trip courtesy of my boyfreind. We stayed for 1 night and had afternoon tea and dinner. The staff were so nice and couldn't do enough for us. We had a room over looking the market
square which we paid extra for but was fantastic. We had the 6/7 course tasting menu which was fabulous - a good way to try all the different food on offer which ended with the cheese trolley - OMG! I'd love to go back sometime very soon!! Good value for money I thought - not cheap but worth every penny.

Room Tip: Worth paying the extra for the view of the market square

I am so glad we opted to spend our anniversary at The Black Swan. The place is oozing charm and character with nooks and crannies each and every way you turn. The standard of furnishing and decor is very good and there are some lovely old relics of furniture dotted around. It has a character all of it's own. Too many hotels nowadays seem to have the 'corporate stamp' - you know, that over contrived look? Well, not the Black Swan.
The room overlooked the Market Square and we spent a little time on the window seat watching the world go by. The window box was bursting with healthy plants and flowers and made a pretty display. All part of the attention to detail which shows that someone cares about the place. Likewise the garden at the back which we had time to amble around.
The staff - what a credit to the hotel. So efficient from the minute we walked in to the time that we left. Pleasant, professional and very smart indeed.
We took advantage of the Great Yorkshire Escape offer and it was good value. I would certainly recommend it - in fact I already have to several family members and friends. Thank you to The Black Swan for making us feel special

Four of us had afternoon tea here and were totally blown away by how wonderful it was. Loads of different teas or coffees to choose from, gorgeous sandwiches, cakes & scones. The service was great and surroundings quaint. Would not hesitate to come back given the chance.

After 1 night, we abandoned a 3 night stay at Runswick Bay as, sadly, there was a constant background humming from various fans and we were looking for PEACE! After checking reviews, we chanced upon the Black Swan and what a find it was.

The first room we were allocated was.... next to a generator / fan, so we asked for a change. A room was allocated immediately, with no fuss and a smile, and it was smashing.

We found the room to be clean and comfortable and the staff were VERY helpful and courteous throughout. A special mention to our 'mature' breakfast maitre d (??), who made everyone feel so welcome.

The food was EXCELLENT! Whitby kippers for breakfast were a special treat and lunch in the bar provided us with an exceptional steak sandwich.

Dinner was included in our package ( which was great value for money). Food was wonderful - wine a bit pricey ( £24 for bottle of house wine if memory serves....... but it WAS a good wine)

Well done and thank you to all at the Black Swan - we'll be back.

Room Tip: The garden rooms are lovely!

The hotel has a great atmosphere, great location and good food. But here it ends. The service is terrible: arrogant, not helpful, unfriendly, simply unprofessional. In addition the room was dirty upon arrival. Cleaning service is also terrible. If you want to experience old-style British empire attitude mixed with incapable service personnel you should stay there. Otherwise, the value for money doesn't make it a good recommendation.
