“A special treat”
Reviewed July 15, 2009

12 July 2009

I booked the 'I Hate Mondays' package which was a surprise 40th birthday treat for my husband. The hotel extended this deal for two nights and upgraded our room to a suite on arrival due to the special occasion.

I was really worried about going after reading a few of the reviews and very nearly cancelled, that would have been a big mistake as we had a fantastic time.

From the moment we pulled up outside the hotel we were met by friendly and helpful staff and this service continued throughout the stay. The room was lovely and overlooked the pool area which was especially lnice at night all lit up by candles.

The food was excellent, we had the tasting menu one evening and the set menu the other.

The spa heat experience was included in the price and we were in there for most of the afternoon, loved it.

We would stop at the Feversham Arms again, it was a special treat for a special birthday.

It's a funny one is the Feversham - I've found myself agreeing more with the recent reviews than those further down in that we had an alright stay but that was more to do with relaxing in Helmsley than really the hotel itself.
I'll start with the good bits - we found the food excellent, went for the tasting menu on our first night and it was very good to the point where we enjoyed pretty much every course - the matched wine was good but quite stingy (onto that in a minute!). The outdoor pool was nice aswell, it was warm on an otherwise not so warm day and clean and pleasant. The breakfasts were excellent and served in bed too.
OK, onto the not so good bits. We paid effectively £130 a night for our room and it was no better than a decent B&B - very small, not massively well decorated and overall just a bit pokey. The theme of value runs strong through the hotel though....
£10 for a bucket of ice (that's iced tap water by the way) to be delivered to your room? A gate fencing off hotel guests from using the outdoor hot pool (£25 for that particular priveledge)?
Overall, I felt the hotel lacked any sort of warmth whatsoever which is a real shame because Helmsley is a charming place - it just hasn't really rubbed off on the Feversham.
I get the distinct impression that the place has believed it's own hype and felt justified in offering not an awful lot for erm...quite a lot!
I've got no problem whatsoever in paying good money to stay somewhere that was worth it, truth is this place probably isn't.

I paid a fortune for a tiny room. It was nicely decorated with an enormous bed but that's all that could fit in the room - a bed! And it was two beds pushed together for a double bed so wasnt too impressed with that. I think this was room no 4 so beware. The spa was nice though and we did have a relaxing time. The location is perfect for a potter around Helmsley. We had the food lover's menu and it was really lovely.

I spent 3 nights there with my wife last month. We were on a DBB deal, and in a Spa suite, so just about their best room. Initial reaction was excellent. Lovely village and surroundings. The hotel is modern, smart and pretty. Staff are helpful if robotic. Our room was great, with a balcony overlooking the pool. The only downside of the room was neither telly worked properly, which is poor for £360 per night! The real letdown was the food. Really poor. Poor choice, poorly cooked, tiny portions, massive price. £25+ for a main meal the size of a small starter, that didn't taste good. The breakfast was the same, poor quality, not much choice. This is based on it being an expensive boutique hotel. Some of the worst food we'd had, and we've eaten, believe me! :) Such a downer. If you are going there, stay by all means, but have all your meals out. Breakfast in one of the local cafes, lunch in a pub, but I thoroughly recommend the evening meal at The Star In at Harome. 10 minutes away, cheaper, michelin starred, fantabulous!!!! So much food, we couldn't eat it all! My wife said it was the best meal she'd ever had....
Anyway, back to the hotel. The spa is nice, but not special, no gym either, and the pool tiny, decorative, and full of children.
We wouldn't go again I'm afraid, as there are much better places for the price, or less, elsewhere.
xx

First things first; qualification.
I always read these reviews and wonder if the person who wrote the review actually has a point of reference to rate this hotel against.

I've stayed in probably around 20 boutique and luxury hotels in the North of England and the Feversham arms is firmly at the bottom of my list.

As the name suggests; this is basically a pub that has revieved investment and they've used this to try to cash in on the boutique hotel craze.
Unfortunatley this hasn't worked out and you get the feeling that this place wants maximum return on the minimum investment which is a good policy for busisnes but in the consumer hospitality market; means you as the customer get small, cramped rooms, poor service and a particularily poor location...

Lets break this down:

It's an old boozer in the middle of a village so it's not got the attraction of scenery or peace and quiet as it's actually quite a busy little village.
The rooms are low ceilinged with locked down windows meaning your time in the room is not particularily pleasant for a country break.
When we stayed; the hot water wasn't working and the staff seemed to think this was perfectly acceptable as we could just get a cold shower!!
The manager is a conceited little man with small man syndrome who seems to think that being a manager in a 2nd rate, so -called boutique hotel is the social equivalent of a peerage.

In summary'; there are numerous other places that will deliver a better value short break, in better surroundings with better staff.

Dont fall for the fancy website and overly courteous reviews on here as I can't imagine anyone could compare this place to hotels such as the Samling, Seaham Hall, etc etc

My family and i travelled up to stay for two nights at the feversham arms . We stayed in a gorgeous room by the pool, it was stylishly cosy and very clean. The staff were extremely friendly and welcoming and the service was outstanding from the reception to the restaurant. Another delight was the delicious food, probably the best i've ever tasted, they also had fantastic range of wines on offer. We were lucky enough to use the spa which was extremely well run the treatments were excellant. I would highly recommend staying at the feversham arms we enjoyed every minute and we would love to return one day.

This is a hotel which is quite expensive for what you get. Setting the cost aside our stay was very enjoyable. We stayed in one of the suites overlooking the pool, quite small but still managing two televisions and an open fire if needed.Room service was efficient but pricey. The food was nicely cooked although the portions were not copious and the menu limited. Most of the staff were foreign speaking and I have to say difficult to understand at times. Having said that my command of Polish did not compare with their command of English!!!!The staff were all accommodating and pleasant .This is a hotel I would definitely revisit but will look out for the special discounted deals we may be sent by email.
