The hotel design and layout is brilliant. The rooms are first class, and the staff are both attentive and discreet (ie. not in your face).

My husband and I went here for a mini-honeymoon the day after our wedding. They upgraded us to the best suite, helped us carry all our wedding paraphernalia inc cake, several bouquets and armloads of presents. They even arranged all the flowers into vases. The service was excellent and we had the best time, we absolutely loved the room (and we are v fussy) and the hotel in general. We went back last year as a mini break a few weeks before our baby was due, again they were so friendly and accomodating. We had a different suite which was also stunning and so unusual and we enjoyed a lovely time sitting by the pool. I can't wait to go back and use the spa... love love love this place...

We spend 3 nights here during the February holiday. It's been extensively extended & refurbished in the last year or so and overall they've made a really good job. Privately owned, the owner / staff try very hard to make guests individually welcome and pay a lot attention to detail. We had a spa side room, which was lovely - a 'lounge' with a bedroom and bathroom & a balcony. All very nicley finished and new (bit mumsy in taste, but really fine). The original hotel is a row of town center, stone-built cottages, with the new buildings behind (in similar style, with a modern angle). There is an outdoor pool, which is great (and warm) and a spa (we didn't use the spa, but we're sure it's good). The bar & restaurant are not yet remodelled, but they're comfortable and nice. The food is really good and they catered very well for special diets (service a bit slow, but fine and very friendly).
There are about 35 rooms, which sounds a bit big but it doesn't feel like it.
Location is brilliiant, right in the middle of fab Helmsley.
Issues - some of the new bits feel a bit out of character (undergrund car park) and some bit's weren't quite finished. It's lovely that they employ sattf of many nationalities, but they have too many who don't speak / understand English that well. Not a big deal.
Overall a very good place to stay, very good service and lots to make you smile.

Stayed for 2 nights in Feb 2009. Agree with previous reviews - the service was very good, and reception and dining area was superb. Even managed a few lengths of the pool! The room (which was a standard room) were fine but perhaps don't quite reflect the standard which the hotel is trying to achieve.

The best asset of the hotel is the food. We stayed on dinner bed and breakfast package and enjoyed 2 superb meals. The breakfast perhaps being one of the best we have ever had.

The location of the hotel at the foot of the Yorkshire Moors makes it an ideal location to explore the area.

Overall I would say it is a good hotel for a weekend break but perhaps not great value until the rooms are brought to the same luxorious standard as the rest of the hotel.

First impressions of the Feversahm Arms are pretty impressive. Clearly a lot of money has been spent, evidenced by a very modern underground car park. The reception area and the view through to the outdoor pool, all add to the anticipation of what is in store. Our receptionist was courteous but not warm. She did however allow us early access to our room and gave us a guided tour. We had been upgraded to a room with a separate, small lounge, and access outside to the pool area. The room was really well appointed. Two B & O televisions, but no tea and coffee making facilities??

My main gripe with the stay was the hotel policy on the use of the outside hot tub, which is next to the (slightly) heated outdoor pool. Hotel guests can use the pool, but not the hot tub, unless paying for spa treatments. The cheapest of which is £25 per head ('the heat experience'). I thought this was a bit of a rip off, particularly when we saw numerous other hotel guests simply wandering from their rooms and using the hot tub unchallenged. Good luck to them, but I was £50 down for the pleasure of using a hot tub which was, to be blunt, dirty. I have my own outside hot tub. I know what I am talking about. The water was filthy.

Dinner was taken in the hotel and was very well presented by enthusiastic, knowledgable and attentive staff (including the owner). However, the food was a little uninspired and the bar and dining room a little tired (look up).

Overall we enjoyed our stay, but probably wont be rushing back.

As soon as we entered the hotal we started to relax. The staff were warm and friendly. The fact that we were escorted to our room by the receptionist, she was enthusiastically explaining everthing that the hotel offered.
The room, #12, was comfortable and very stylishly decorated. The fact that they had left DVD's in the room for us to watch was just amazing.
We ate in the main dining room, where we enjoyed the'set meal' that was included in the package rate. Having stayed at many hotels for short breaks, this menu was truely exceptional. The restaurant staff were knowledgable and attentive, and the food was delicious.
We were woken with a tap on the door as our pre-ordered tea & coffee were delivered along with the newspaper, all free of charge!
We had a liesurely breakfast, the full monty, which sufficed until dinner, when the whole experienced was repeated.
All in all and enjoyable, relaxing value for money trip - just what the doctor ordered!
Will we return - you betcha!

Arrival:
Jacki the receptionist was very professional and helpful. The reception area is modern and obviously a new addition to the hotel. The staircase leading to the bedrooms however soon parts with the new, clean and modern, to the worn and shabby corridor of the first floor rooms. We were originally booked into room 11, but Jacki told us before we entered our room (9) that we had been upgraded. I think at that point I was expecting something wonderful and was met with...

Room (9):
A lacklustre, worn and very rough around the edges room. Yes, we had been upgraded from a queen size bed, to a king size bed; but this room left much to be desired. For the cost of the hotel, and its own claims that it is a chic and sleek hotel/spa, I was left wanting. The bathroom was very dull and bordering on industrial. It had a black floor, of the sort you might see in airplane loos. The bathroom door was glass panelled. The furntiure had been well worn and knocked about. My suspicion is that the more pricier rooms have the new furntiure in, and the old furniture has been relegated to the £145 per night rooms. For the money you can far better in Paris. The top price rooms at £395 are just a little cheaper than a good room in the Hotel de Crillon. The difference is that Helmsley is not Paris; nor is the Feversham Arms a palace. The staff are mainly Polish (or of that ilk), and some lack social graces, and forget to smile and cease to be robotic in their carrying out of their duties.

The walls between rooms are very thin, and noises of a dubious nature were heard most of the night. The floor seemed to sag in front of the bathroom door, and the carpet was quite shabby looking. The curtain had a nasty smell, which seemed to get worse when they were drawn (the heat from the radiator was conducting the smell I think).

The windows were non-opening, and the overpowering heat throughout the night was just too much. We overlooked the main road and traffic noise (yes, even on a country road) was quite disturbing.

On checking out we were told to ask for a fan to cool the room, but the simplicity of being able to open a window would have sufficed.

Food:
We had a light tea prior to an evening out, which was at best fine. The homemade chips with a prawn sandwich were undercooked. Breakfast was fairly good, although cereal were limited in choice, and the fruit option was a little dried up. The cooked breakfast was tasty though.

Overall:
Would I go back? No. Would I recommend it to others? No, unless you are prepared to pay £395 for their top rooms, but then I would suggest you pay a little more and stay somewhere uber chic like the Hotel de Crillon in Paris.

We'll notch the experience up to, well, experience I guess. Locally this hotel has a good reputation as a hotel that is the last word in chic. No, sadly it does not live up to that reputation. I was disappointed.

One last note:
I was itchy all through the night. I heard yapping noises (small dogs) coming from rooms along the corridor. I am very surprised that a hotel of this apparent calibre allows animals into the rooms. Explains the itchiness though...! And perhaps the smell coming from the floor length curtains...urgh!
