“A warm and comfortable professionally-run B&B”
Reviewed December 31, 2010

Both our rooms clean, well maintained, and a good size – and certainly warm enough during a very cold spell of weather.
Well-located within easy walking distance of the village of Helmsley, where there are various good places to eat. Off-street parking.

We stayed for a one night getaway this November at Carlton Lodge and were impressed. Very friendly hosts, lovely clean room with comfy bed and nice and cosy in the cold weather. Yummy breakfast too. Would recommend to others looking for a pleasant break away in North Yorkshire.

Quite simply, Chris and Margaret are the perfect hosts, the B & B is perfectly situated, ample car parking, the premises & bedrooms are very clean and well-equipped, and the breakfast is to-die for!
See you again, soon, I hope (if you have a vacancy, that is!)

As a group of walkers accustomed to staying in 4* accommodation, we were really happy with our stay at the Carlton Lodge. Very clean; comfortable beds; attentive host; excellent breakfast (the best we had on our 10-day walking holiday). In addition, we were able to leave our car for the entire 10 days.

We read the reviews on here before booking this for 3 nights over New Year. The location is great but the room itself was pokey with a lumpy small bed and awful pillows. We booked a double but the room itself (number 8) would be better as a single. Helmsley itself is lovely but be warned after 8.30pm the place pretty much closes down so you have to drive for a curry to Beadlam the nearest village. The breakfasts at the Carlton Lodge are brilliant with good service, but unfortunately on New Years day we came back in the evening to find the room hadn’t been serviced. When we asked for fresh towels they were brusque and said they couldn’t service the room as we’d been in. Given it was New Years day and they’d tried before midday perhaps unsurprising! However they made no effort to try and clean the room at a later time and the owners were dissimive and disinterested when we mentioned it upon leaving. With an abundance of accommodation near to the Market Square I would recommend trying elsewhere for a visit to the picturesque village of Helmsley.

Don't bother with the pubs and hotels to stay at when visiting Helmsley, simply stay at the Carlton Lodge!! Having just returned from a weekend in Helmsley with friends, I would thoroughly recommend this excellent B&B. Chris, the owner, is very professional and very welcoming. Clearly he has many years in the trade and nothing is too much trouble. Car parking is first rate with plenty of private spaces. Our accomodation was good, we had a superior room which had a king size bed and en-suite. The en-suite was a little small but you can expect this from a building with such character. The rooms were spotless and cleaned daily. There is a resident's lounge with plenty of books and DVD's to borrow. There is also lots of information about Helmsley, the surrounding area and local walks. A 5 minute walk and you're in the centre of the village. The best part of the stay were the breakfasts! The full Yorkshire breakfast is top class with ingredients sourced locally. One of our party was a vegetarian and by letting Chris know in advance, he made sure that they were catered for with the biggest vegetarian breakfast I've seen! I would thoroughly recommend this B&B as a base to explore the North York Moors or to spend time in Helmsley. We will certainly return!
