“Great location, service, food....even weather!”
Reviewed June 8, 2011

We spent 2 nights in the Wheatsheaf as a family of 4 plus a dog. Nothing was too much trouble for the owners and staff, and a special thanks to Andy who looked after us superbly. We were attracted here by the comments and the fact dogs are welcome, (if you are not a dog lover don't worry, the rooms are kept spotless and you would not know any pets had stayed there previously). We had an evening meal here which was excellent, had a prior arrangement for the second night otherwise would have eat here again. The breakfasts were really good with everything freshly made with a choice of egg style. Could not fault our stay in any way.

Stayed at the Wheatsheaf for 1 night so that we could explore the surrounding areas. The staff were very friendly and welcoming. Lovely room, bed very comfortable, which was a proper bed, great nights sleep didn't wanna get up the next morning, no noise except for the wildlife i.e. birds and sheep, so cute to hear them the next morning. Bathroom very clean, and bath large enough to take 2. Breakfast lovely and lots of it, very filling. Lots of fresh air and great walks for as much or as little as your energy allows.

Ideal base for touring Wensleydale, Castle Bolton just round the corner, West Burton Falls, Aysgarth Falls, Hawes, Leyburn, Richmond, all round the corner, just so much to choose from.

Definitely recommended, and we can't wait to go back.

We didn't find Hargill Stone Circle however which was one of the things that attracted us to the guest house, but then nor did the locals know about it either, so maybe next time. Certainly no slight on the Wheatsheaf at all.

from start to finish a fantastic pub/b&b, its not a hotel, it doesn't have hot and cold running waiters but it does have Clair who manages the place wonderfully well. Our 5th trip is already planned.

As ever the Wheatsheaf welcomed us with open arms, they went out of their way to get us a room for the 3rd night (they were fully booked) so we didn't have to find somewhere else for our last night - or find somewhere else moving away from the Dales (which we definitely didn't want to do). We have stayed here more than half a dozen times over the past four years and will continue to visit this beautiful part of the world, staying here. Our room(s) from this and our previous visits have all been spacious, clean and extremely comfortable. The food is very good with plenty of choice, either in the bar or the restaurant - the staff are very helpful and the ample car park to the rear of the hotel is safe and off the main road . I have no hesitation in recommending this place to anyone, and have done so on many an occasion to family and friends all over the country.

stayed at this pub for one night whilst doing the James Herriot way with the dog. big plus is it is right opposite the end of the footpath up from Aysgarth - a welcome site!! Room was a nice size four poster in the old section facing the road but no traffic! Only minor negative with the room was the shower was a bit small if trying to wash hair - (girlfiends comment)
Downstairs there is a nice residents lounge full of books and games, Resturant where breakfast is also served and the bar area where we ate. Food very good and the black sheep beer a devine tipple after a days walking. Staff very friendly and welcoming... as has been previously mentioned, you WILL get to speak to Alex the landlords father, ex of singapore, kent and rugby scrumhalf who WILL recite the same jokes and stories to you some 5 or six times as he moves from table to table, beer in one hand and whisky in the other!!

My husband and I spent three nights at the Wheatsheaf while we toured the Yorkshire Dales. Unfortunately while we were there the owners were away but the Inn was very capably managed by the friendly and warm Martina.

We had a room in the newer section and it was quite comfortable except that the bed was squeaky. The bathroom and shower were very good.

We ate our meals in the bar and were pleasantly surprised with the good quality of the food. Not a gourmet experience but very nice.

This is a very quiet village but a good location to explore the nearby larger towns and we were always happy to get back to it's tranquil setting.

Our stay was definitely enhanced by the friendly attention of Martina who went out of her way to make our stay at the Wheatsheaf very pleasant.

Very nice location with ample parking. The rooms are well appointed with tea and coffee making facilities - although no hair dryer. Our bedroom had a four poster bed with bath rather than shower which was pleasant after a day's walking. The room was 'compact' although the others in the new extension are much larger. The breakfast was plentiful with local ingredients, served between 8.30am and 9.30am. The bar was traditional with real ales at reasonable prices. The staff were very pleasant and the Landlords father, Alex, was a gem - full of stories 'happy days'. It is worth ringing direct to try for a deal as their prices are not the cheapest. This was borne out by the rooms still available. If there was a downside to the Wheatsheaf it would be the overpriced evening meals - nothing less than £10 (Cumberland sausage and chips £9.95!!) - and with frozen chips.
I suppose with a captive audience they can charge what they like.
Having said that I would recommend this establishment and will probably return.
Claire, the Landlord's daughter, now runs operations and was highly efficient and pleasant under the frosty outer coating. Don't be put off by the smell of chip fat as you walk in the front door.
