Been here a few times over the past 6 years seen a few managers come and go had good and bad visits in the past. Tried again last Sunday for dinner was greeted by a very nice waitress and got a table by the fire I had Sunday roast lamb and hubby had the liver and bacon , mine was ok meat a bit tough but rest was good, hubby,s liver was a bit over done but we would go back sometime. Manager needs to learn the art of smiling more! And bring back the homemade bread! Although I guess that could affect the sale of the starters? Anyway worth a visit now and again.

Thank Karen S

We called at The Black Lane Ends for lunch on Saturday 2nd Feb 2013, we arrived at about 12.45. We went to the bar, no hello or anything in the way of a greeting from a young dark haired barmaid/waitress. Our drinks were served and we were asked "Are you eating?", we replied "yes please" and she then said "I'll put them on your tab". We went to sit down, two other tables were seated awaiting food, menus were presented and we were told where the specials boards were. We selected our meals, meanwhile the barmaid/waitress was busy texting on her phone and generally stood about doing nothing. If it wasn't for the people on the next table, we'd have still been sitting there with no food. Eventually she came and took our order, no please or thank you. Our meals came about 15 mins later, our food was just put on the table, within two minutes she was back asking if everything was ok!!!! After putting coal and logs on the fire she went back to texting on her phone behind the bar. My husband paid the bill at the bar, no thank you, but when he gave her a tip - God only knows why, she actually smiled and said thanks.
I work in customer services and this sort of behaviour wouldn't be tolerated by my boss, this girl has no concept of manners and should be taught some basic customer service skills, manners cost nothing.
The chef however needs applauding, the food was excellent, hot, tasty and well presented, maybe he should show his face more often, meet his clientele and see how the waitress behaves towards his customers!!! Without customers, this place would close down, the landlord does an exceptional job with the beer, it's just his bar/waiting staff that need to polish up their act. Not too sure I'd go back.

We've been to this pub many times, as a couple, or for family get-togethers, & have never been disappointed. The pub is still a pub with locals propping up the bar, & unless it's boiling outside, (which is a rarity in these parts!) there is a roaring fire at either end of the pub. The young bar staff & chef are all enthusiastic about building the business, but like most youngsters not obsequious. While the food is delicious, well-cooked & presented, it is not pretentious, but is filling, satisfying & very good value too. It is an all round honest pub serving honest meals.

Visited with my wife on a Saturday evening. Its difficult to get out much when you have small children so getting out for a meal was a bit of a treat. Would have been better somewhere else though...

The food itself is good - decent size portions and tasty. There is a large and varied menu so you shouldn't have any trouble finding something to appeal. But it really isn't cheap - think the price you would pay in a good restaurant rather than in a pub (which is where you are).

The problem is with the staff. The waitress seemed somewhat disinterested and almost unfriendly, certainly not helpful anyway when taking our orders. Food arrived fast enough but when we finished our main courses and drinks none of the waitresses or (presumably) manager who walked past asked if we needed more drinks (which we did) or wanted to order dessert (we most certainly did!). This lasted for slightly over half an hour before we became somewhat disenchanted and went to the bar to pay.
As I paid the member of staff asked if everything was ok and was told that we weren't very happy but all we got in response was a 'oh, sorry' rather than an attempt to actually resolve the problem (and in turn get me to spend more money with them).

So we came away feeling rather disappointed with the experience.

Food good, service bad and for that reason I won't be going back.
