“Excellent for afternoon tea”
Reviewed May 1, 2013

Me and my friends have had quite a few afternoon teas our my time and this place is by far best (even Mayfair doesn't beat it). It's reasonably priced for a little bit of luxury. Portion sizes are good and staff are very friendly and attentive. I would definitely recommend.

Stayed the nights of the Jubilee celebrations with my 19 year old daughter.

The hotel mistakenly assumed that I was coming again with my wife so gave us a double rather than twin room but quickly corrected the mistake giving us two single rooms that were but noisy beng at the top of the stairs. One had a view of the main village street.

Great restaurant with delicious local produce and a good wine list. Nice common parts, Darwin room and malt whisky collection.

The spa pool and treatment area are good, unless it's raining that it was, hard.

The in house pub over the road provided a less stuffy and more relaxing for dinner with a teenager.

My wife and I have just returned from our sixth visit in seven years to this marvellous hotel. The welcome is genuine and heartfelt; our room - number 18 - was all comfort ,with our own conservatory and patio; how the chef managed to avoid a Michelin star defeats me; all our meals were delicious and well balanced and chef was complimented by Eric the sommelier who was only too pleased to share his knowledge of wine with guests. All of the staff were helpful and friendly from Jonathan in the lounge to Ellen at breakfast (both of whom have been there for some years). If you have a liking for a view of the colourful garden then room 7 is beauty.
Do go, but leave me room for next year please. A real battery charging experience.

Room Tip: All are good. Room 18 in the Coach House was great but if you would rather be in the main house then...

We have just returned from 4 nights at Summer Lodge with a party of 40 people and what a splendid hotel Summer Lodge is. The staff are so attentive, the food is of the highest order, and the bin list of enormous proportions.

These people know what hospitality is and if you are in the area, why not give it a try, we will certainly be at Summer Lodge very soon.

This is the third year running we have spent a week’s R&R at Summer Lodge to recharge the batteries, get some rest and receive the best service imaginable. The quality of service and food just seems to get better year by year – just when you thought it wasn’t possible to improve any further. The rooms are lovely and beautifully serviced, the gardens are stunning and the pool and spa area is a surprising bonus in a hotel of this size. Charles Lotter, the hotel manager, has the place run like a well-oiled machine – every member of staff addressing you by name and always with a welcoming smile. Steven Titman, the chef, continues to excel with ever greater creativity and quality (come on Michelin, where’s his star?). Perfectly cooked breakfasts, stunning afternoon teas and sublime dinners. Max, the young but incredibly capable head waiter, runs the restaurant with calm, friendly and impressive efficiency. Jonathan, the head barman, remembers your favourite drinks from year to year. Eric, the sommelier, always has the perfect choice of wine to accompany dinner. And so it goes on – I could mention all the members of staff by name as they deserve the recognition, Julian, Rosemary, Dainis, Ellen etc etc (apologies to those I have left out). Just a remarkably good hotel in a beautiful location. We have already booked our week away there for next year. Thank you Summer Lodge for being such a terrific place – the only problem is that it spoils us for virtually everywhere else!

We would have no hesitation in choosing to stay at Summer Lodge again whenever an opportunity should arise. The attention to detail was first rate in all aspects: a welcome at the car as we drove up to park, immediate assistance with luggage, a superb afternoon tea to greet us, the meals were truly amazing in choice, presentation, taste, service - not to mention the chef's "complimentary" items.

Room Tip: We were on the ground floor in the Lodge as we took our Boxer dog where everything was provided for...
