“An experience !”

Don't visit if you don't like dogs !!! We didn't realise that this hotel caters primarily for the blind and partially sighted. And of course their guide dogs. Out little dog became rather overwhelmed !!
Room and bathroom spotlessly clean and very well equipped. Decor unimaginative. Good service. Breakfast menu OK. Beautiful grounds. Efficient staff but they seemed either bored or overtired. WiFi in public areas only.
Evening entertainment if you like that sort of thing.
Unless you are the sort of person that enjoyed school dinners .. eat out !!!

We had an overnight stay here recently and booked after reading plenty of the reviews on this site. We managed to get a reduced rate of 70GBP (100GBP on the hotel's own site) and thought we had done okay for a seaside resort with a pool in August.
Positives - the public areas are good, with a lovely foyer and listed staircase. The gardens are excellent and there is a short walk on to the promenade. The reception staff were very jolly and courteous. The atmosphere is quite relaxed, and as many of the guests are blind/partially sighted, there are plenty of guide dogs, families, carers/helpers etc and this seemed to make for a rather warm ambience. Breakfast also was pleasant enough, not the best I've ever had but perfectly good.
The downsides are relatively minor, but enough to jar and prevent a more generous review. In short: whilst we were aware from the website that the pool would sometimes be closed, the weekend times are rather unfriendly - so it is not possible to swim on a saturday or sunday after 16.45, which is when a lot of new guests would arrive. Neither is it possible to swim before breakfast, since the pool opens at 10.00 just as breakfast finishes - and who wants to swim on a full stomach? Since we particularly booked because of this facility, we were quite disappointed to be unable to use it. Moreover, on weekdays there are swimming lessons from 16.45 to 19.15 and dinner can only be ordered up to 19.45 - so again, it is not possible to have a swim before dinner on any day. I think that this is a great shame and, had we known, I am afraid that we would not have booked.
The room was on the second floor, perfectly fine in terms of size but somewhat lacking in facilities. Not that we were too bothered, but there was no TV reception at all (I did try retuning it three times but it only showed 'no signal' messages from before this time). Our mattress was also not the best, we both slept badly as it was one of the older and thinner metal-sprung type. There is free parking at the hotel on two terraces, but in our time there no spaces were available save for double-parking - I would guess parking is at a premium in Teignmouth given the hills, so perhaps this is understandable.
So overall - not terrible but not brilliant, and with a couple of thoughtful tweaks it could have been 4*.

Room Tip: The gardens are lovely so try to get a room with a view. Not sure if any rooms have been refurbished...

The hotel is okay, and in a wonderful location, but avoid the swimming pool if you value your health. The floors are filthy ,especially in the changing room ,the tiles clearly haven't been cleaned for years and the foot bath is a joke .-full of dust and dirt ! I'm amazed it hasn't been closed down by public health inspectors !

My partner and I made a last minute booking at The Cliffden Hotel in Teignmouth. We hadn't realised that the hotel was predominately for blind/partially sighted people; though this, in no way detracted from our wonderful stay, we met some amazing and inspirational people. The hotel was very clean, our room was comfortable and airy. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided in the rooms. Plenty of information on where to visit in the area and info about the hotel; very informative.
We had breakfast in bed, which was lovely, as we were rather late getting up, due to a few drinks at the bar; which stays open all night. The barman Mel is very welcoming and has lots of funny stories.
The grounds of the hotel are beautiful; you can reach the sea front by walking through the grounds; but you will need a key for the gate;ask at reception.
Would definitely stay here again; and goes without saying it is dog friendly.
Excellent customer service, not sure why other members have been negative on this one. We only had breakfast; so can't comment on the food.

A very nice looking hotel with excellent gardens. Dinner and breakfast meals were very good and staff were well mannered . My only grumble is the tv in the room wasn't working as it should just ITV , ITV3 and the information channel.

This hotel is situated on a hill, has very bad customer service and if you enjoy watching a bit of tv, very bad picture and only 3 channels, no free view. The doors are not fire safe and bang shut so kept awake all night. We were supposed to stay for 3 nights but left after 2, food was terrible, no entertainment and to top it all had food poisoning - good luck if you do decide to stay here!

Room Tip: Would have had one in the garden just to get a good night sleep!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Cliffden Hotel was built as a private House in 1815 for Sir John Strachan on 35 acres of grounds adjacent to the Dawlish Road. The original gardens were built in the Regency style gardens, with smooth lawns, shrubberies and trelliswork and wall-plants against the lower storey of the house. In 1988, the then current owner Dr Mules retired, he put Cliffden House up for sale with the understanding that it would be used for "greater good". The House was purchased by Guide Dogs for the blind and converted to a hotel which offer accommodation to both blind, sighted and partially sighted guests. The hotel now sits in 7 acres of landscaped gardens, and a short walk through these private grounds brings you to the glorious seafront at Teignmouth. ... more   less
