An excellent small restaurant with a fantastic location that serves local Cornish food at a reasonable price.

“Very good evening meal”
Reviewed May 28, 2013

Dined here on a busy Saturday night. The atmosphere is good and the quality of food is excellent. The only criticism I have is that the service is very slow. This is,however, more than made up for by the quality of the food and the friendliness of the staff. A leisurely experience but one that I can recommend highly.

“Very enjoyable Saturday evening meal”
Reviewed May 14, 2013

We ate at The Square last Saturday evening and thoroughly enjoyed our visit . The restaurant is bright, airy ,clean and comfortable, its location is unbeatable and the food first class. In particular the Aubergine curry was 'to die for' ! We are lucky enough to live fairly locally so will definitely be back.
I would add however that the menu although very appealing is somewhat limited (i.e. no chicken dish on that particular evening) but that is a minor 'gripe'.

“One Of The Top Ten Meals Of My Life”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

We ate at The Square on Thursday 9th May. We did not book a table and walked in on spec on a truly cold windy night. We were immediately offered a choice of tables and given a friendly welcome. The restaurant was noticeably warm and with just 30 covers was not set out to maximise guest numbers.. The design of the restaurant told you, you were in the hands of professionals who clearly knew how important first impressions are.

The set menu priced at £16.50 for 2 courses and £21 for 3 courses suggested value for money....based on the superb choices of all courses. However, Salmon gravadlax ,Cornish crab, pickled fennel & dill salad with horseradish cream was not on the set menu but was simply outstanding, particularly in the way the pickled fennel complimented the crab and salmon..

My partner had Roast Cornish silver mullet, shellfish provencal stew , local greens and aioli...my partner substituted the menu new pots with rosemary polenta and the staff soon sorted out the change.
I had Cornish cod fillet, champ potato, crayfish, cucumber & dill sauce..

By now we were simply overawed by the quality and taste sensations and we knew the chefs were simply artists so rare these days who instinctively knew how to use fresh local ingredients to give your taste buds and and eyes a feast to behold....when food tastes better than it looks and it looks unbelievable it is an experience never to forget.. We appreciate that is a level of appreciation that may sound like "Oh Yeah". but we make no apology for writing these words, it is simply worth every penny you pay at The Square...as by now we had been in the restaurant for 2 1/2 hours and it whizzed by with great service and wonderful food.. and so to sweet !!!!!!!!!.I rarely if ever eat sweet but we made an exception .I had lemon buttermilk panna cotta, rhubarb with shortbread biscuit; my partner had Vanilla crème brulee , poached plums ,red wine syrup with chocolate shortbread...perhaps traditional choices but again simply devine.

With a bottle of wine, S Africa Pinotage and a bottle of local Doom Bar Ale (always a good choice to have real ale in a real restaurant ) the bill came to £90 which included an extra glass of wine and 4 coffees. We appreciate that is not cheap but it was possible to eat 3 courses for £42,ex drinks..

Nothing was too much trouble for the staff and their knowledge about all items on the menu, the wine list coupled with their ability to make us feel welcomed and relaxed was an added bonus.

The whole experience was about relaxation and simply wining and dining in lovely surroundings .

A rare treat and one never to be forgotten.....only to repeated....again and again and again.

Congratulations to everyone involved for their vision and hard work.

“Clean, good service & nice food”
Reviewed May 7, 2013

Dropped in for lunch with a girlfriend during the week. We ordered 1 x sparkling mineral water. 1 glass of white wine, a selection of bread with dipping sauce and 2 x Porthleven crab,
salmon gravadlax, pickled fennel & rocket on garlic toast with lemon mayonnaise. We were sort of under the impression (due to the price) that this was a salad rather than a starter. The bread was home made and really lovely. In fact the dish we had each ordered was also lovely, but it definitely wasn't a salad, I think I got 2 leaves of rocket. Enjoyed it but was still a bit hungry afterwards. We considered dessert and then decided we couldn't miss the ice creams along the quay, so we settled for a coffee each. Thought it was a little expensive at over £30 for the two of us. Service was prompt and efficient. I'd go again if I was in Porthleven.
