Came here on a Sunday, the weather was good so we wanted to sit outside. The garden area is lovely to sit in although we couldn't find the way into the pub to order, bit special but the doors all blended in! Friendly staff, quick service and gorgeous food if not a bit limited for choice... Saying that the fish and chips and home made tartar sauce I ate were faultless; and my partner really enjoyed his roast lamb.

Having read a number of favourable reviews of this hotel's restaurant, I booked a table for two, having arranged to visit the nearby Hell Fire Caves in the afternoon. Arriving in the restaurant area, we were unable to find a single member of staff for a good five minutes or so. Eventually, a barman appeared, did not recognize the name I had booked under but escorted us to a table and gave us a copy of the menu.

When no-one came to serve us, I retreated to the bar to ask if that was where we should place our order but was asked to sit down again and await the arrival of a waitress. We ordered Home-Cooked Steak Pie and although we had to wait a considerable time for its arrival, we were able to enter an interesting conversation with a group of regulars sitting at a window table and ploughing their way through The Times Crossword. When the pie finally arrived, I have to say it was of a very high standard, beautifully cooked, with a nice, soft pastry and piping hot ... though the mashed potato was cold - obviously placed on the plate well in advance of the meat.

So yes - a value for money main course but no in terms of organization and service.

We had booked a table for lunch on Saturday for 4 adults and 4 children. We intentionally booked a time in advance of the standard lunchtime rush, as we knew the children would get cranky if they had to wait too long for their food. We arrived whilst the pub was still relatively empty, and quickly placed our food order from the standard menu (we weren't warned that any of these dishes were likely to take a long time to prepare) and then sat and waited whilst the pub slowly filled up as other customers started to arrive.

After a while, we started to notice that other people who had arrived and ordered their food after us were already beginning to receive their meals. After about 45 mins still waiting (and the children starting to complain of being hungry), we spoke to our waitress who told us our order would be sent out shortly (at no point did she offer us bread or any other snack to tide us over).

Another 15 mins or so went by and still no food! We spoke to the waitress again and she assured us that our meals would be the next ones to come out. Sure enough, shortly afterwards the food started to arrive, but one of the meals was missing (thankfully one of the adult meals!) We pointed this out to the waitress who went back to the kitchen and reappeared a few minutes later saying that the final meal would be out shortly (clearly she had missed it off the order initially).

We also took this opportunity to point out to the bar manager how bad we thought our service had been that day, but he only apologised for the one very late meal and not for the fact that all the other meals had taken an hour to arrive! However, when the final meal did finally arrive (roughly 75 mins after originally being ordered), some of the food (pork crackling) was very badly burnt and completely inedible (image attached). We pointed this out to the bar manager, who apologised and offered to replace this food with a properly cooked replacement.

However, he came back a few minutes later to say that there was no cooked pork left in the kitchen and that they would need to cook some more from scratch. Considering the wait we had already endured, the person whose food had been burnt declined to wait any longer and opted to just not eat this part of the meal.

At the end of the meal (we opted to skip desert...life's too short), we asked for the bill and noticed when it arrived that the (very) delayed and inedible final meal was still included on the bill. We raised this with the bar manager and were then very surprised and annoyed that he clearly expected us to still pay for this meal as well! His excuse was that he had offered to replace the meal, but that we had declined (declined to wait for another hour for it to be cooked from scratch, that is!!).

After arguing for another 5 minutes with him, he eventually agreed to take this meal off the bill. By this time, however, we were so completely appalled by the experience we had had that day, that we have sworn never to return there ever again. And it goes without saying, we didn't tip!!

Shame this isn't also listed under restaurants. The food is really tasty and we haven't had a bad meal yet. On Saturday night I had rabbit casserole, my daughter had a homemade burger with a 'jenga' stack of chips, my son had pork belly (very crispy) and my husband (his favourite) beef and beer pie. All were hot and tasty, the service was great and the price £40 ish for the food was very good.
The main bar is in the middle of a revamp so it's not looking at its best (the back room has already been done and looks great)
P. S. There's an log fire in the winter!
Thoroughly recommend

When we arrived the room we had booked was not available (a four poster) so we were shown to a shabby double. There was nothing else available. I have never seen such a small TV, there was only one chair. The furniture was stained and the shower was grubby. We ate in the bar and despite a few hiccups was good. The one waitress did a great job sprinting about to serve everyone. In the morning the breakfast room carpet was covered in food. There was no milk or marmalade on the table, the waitress had to get each cup of coffee and we had to ask for re-fills. The cooked breakfast was good. The experience was very disappointing. We were given £10 discount because of the mix-up.b

The service there wasnt too bad but the owners I found very rude and not very customer friendly or staff friendly I noticed. The food took a long time to arrive and wasnt very hot. the rooms were also freezing cold and couldnt provide another heater as they were being used.

I go here for lunch when fishing close by. There are new owners with a very friendly welcome. The pub is dog friendly, sells well kept hand pulled ales and serves great food. Since he change of management the food has really improved. The the chicken kiev or the fish and chips. Both are great. There is a lot of investment going in as well. The loos are spotless and redecorated and the outside of the building is repainted.

Well worth a visit.

'As of the 18th July 2012, the George and Dragon Hotel, West Wycombe is under new management. In the very near future we will be sympathetically refurbishing all of the rooms in the hotel ensuring that none of the unique original character is lost. We have already made a lot of positive improvements since the takeover including a full thorough deep clean of all the rooms. Shortly we will be developing the downstairs to include a 40+ cover restaurant whilst keeping the rustic charm of the original bar. As the rooms develop we will post new photos to keep you informed. We hope to see you soon.' Through a cobbled archway on West Wycombe High Street, you come to the entrance of a coaching inn built in the early 18th century. When you walk in, it feels quite natural that people have been doing this for almost three centuries. Generations of traders, travellers, lovers and visitors have left traces of their presence on the building and its atmosphere, not least of whom is Sukie, the beautiful social climber whose ghost is said to haunt the building. The attentive service you receive from our staff, however, leaves you in no doubt that you are in the present now. Whether you hope for quick service for a business lunch or a more relaxed pace for dinner with friends, you will not be disappointed. On a fine day, you can sit in our large garden. At the George and Dragon, you will find your bedroom both comfortable and interesting. Two of the rooms have four-poster beds and all of them have the uneven floorboards and quirky angles that come with age. One room straddles the archway into the inn's courtyard and another gives a view over the old roofs and chimneys of West Wycombe. Recent concessions to modern living include en-suite bathrooms, tea and coffee making facilities and Freeview TV. We have three full-time chefs who create an intriguing menu which is English at heart including local game, English cheeses, traditional favourites and lamb from the local estate. Some menu items and daily specials will represent the chefs' selection from the rest of the world and may include dishes from the Mediterranean and the Far East. As you would expect from an establishment where good dining is such a high priority, we also have a choice of well kept real ales, and an ever-developing wine list. ... more   less
