“very nice hotel”
Reviewed December 18, 2012

we stayed here in october and could not find anything wrong with this hotel, rooms were a nice size and very clean, staff were excellent and couldnt do enough for you, the food was lovely and the variety was great typical of a riu hotel. It was a treck to the pool but lots of sunbeds when you got there and lovely clean towels every day. The bar staff especially the older waiters were really good fun, and always remembered what you wanted to drink, it was lovely because processo was available as part of the all inclusive package. We had a birthday and an anniversary while we were there and they made it very special for us, the speciality restauarants defintely worth a visit.
All in all a good hotel.

Stayed at this hotel from the 10/12/12 - 17/12/12

Arrived late in the evening due to a bit of long bus ride from the airport.we had missed dinner so a cold plate was made up for late guests which was acceptable.

Rooms

Great rooms which are spacious with plenty of storage space, huge wardrobes and safe provided free of charge.
We where on the 1st floor and had a great seaview, with balcony, tables and chairs provided on the balcony to soak up the winter sunshine.
Beds quite comfortable and the bedding is more than adequate, its was quite hot when we stayed with temperatures approaching 80 degrees so we needed to take some of the bedding off.
The rooms where made up each day by our maid who left us an xmas card and a few choccies which was a nice touch.

Food

Buffet style morning lunch and evening which was very good, plenty of choice for everyone including the veggies!!,you can have dinner in the eve at 2 sittings,either,6-30pm or 8-30pm and on your first night you will be allocated a table which is then yours for the duration of your say (Dinner only). You can also have lunch at the pool bar which serves pizzas, burgers and the usual pool side fare which is adequate.

Entertainment

Not very exciting im afraid to say,the usual mix of magicians ok singers and karaoke with some truly dreadfull singers, the dj wasnt up too much either, after the show finnished most of the guests decided to leave the room and either slope off to bed or leave for better pubs and bars.

Location

Perched on top a hill,it is quite isolated and we hired a car which we glad we did,we could at least get out and about,There is a bus service provided during the day which for 1 euro will take you down to puerto rico, but this is only every hour and stops running around 5 pm.The road to and from the hotel is extremely steep and for guests with walking difficulties you will need to take a taxi or do like we did and hire a car!

Staff

Excellent staff especially on reception and in the dinning areas, always happy to help and always have a smile on their faces.

summary

A good hotel but only let down by the location, weather superb no rain at all and hot for the time of year, would we return??? yes for sure, but next year we will try a different hotel a little closer to the resort of puerto rico!!

Room Tip: The higher up the better, nearer to the hotel facilities which is an advantage during busy timers as...

Just came back from a week at the RIU. The pros and cons..

PROS: The staff is lovely. Everybody tries to help you and make you feel special. The views from the hotel are gorgeous. The animation team was very dynamic and tried everything to involve you in the activities ( loved the disco time and the "ticket time" to win prices. Had the time of my life with my Hubby)

CONS: Very noisy: it was our first week as a couple since we had a baby and we were hoping to have a good rest but you could hear your neighbours early in the morning and the cleaners shouting OLA to everybody. The food was so bland. There was lots of choices but most of the food was boring, no taste.
In the bathroom, no nice shampoo or soap provided.. just plastic pouches that makes the experience very very cheap.

Would I go back there? No, but we would like to try another RIU resort to make my mind

It took about 50 minutes with Taxi from the airport to get to Riu Vistamar. The hotel is nicely located on a hill overlooking the Amadores beach and Atlantic ocean. We stayed on the 5:th floor, as advised by the Tripadvisor community, but any room and floor will have a great view.
The staff is generally well trained to smile and say nice things which is appreciated. It's an all inclusive hotel with a good selection of budget cuisine. Don't expect anything fancy, just a lot of everything and plenty of it is cooked in front of your eyes. Most of the guests are middle aged or senior citizens just setting out to relax. Everything worked fine accommodation-wise apart from the AC. I brought this up with the reception and a technician was called to our room. He simply stated that the AC-system was "kaputt". I asked for another room and was shown one on the second floor but the AC wasn't blowing cold there either, even after having it run a while. Eventually a person called Jeroene took on the task. He gave me some strange explanations but ultimately did absolutely nothing to remedy the situation. He demanded me to find him the next day and instructed me not to speak to anyone else. All I wanted was the AC to work but as a guest I did not expect these actions on my behalf. I eventually saw the guy again. He had done nothing. This individual was, however, an exception to the overall pleasant and helpful staff. There's lots of activities for both children and adult guests. I thoroughly enjoyed the Paella cooking and the sports instructors who did their best to get the tourists off the sunbeds. November proved to be an excellent month to travel to Gran Canaria with nice weather and lovely temperature. We will be happy to return again (and help the Spanish tourist economy).

Just had an excellent holiday at the RIU Vistamar, far to much good food and excellent cocktails with of course Bailey's & Irish coffee as well.

We were on the 2nd floor room 273 and our view over Playa Amadores beach was beautiful, you don't need to be up high I'd be more worried about how far you are away from the lift! We were just 2 rooms from the lift, it is such a wide hotel with just two banks of lifts that you could have a very long walk and it's surprising how often you have to pop back for something.

I would have liked the hotel to have a lounge bar, at 6pm you can get drinks from the evening entertainment bar but during the day in here it's just self service beer, coffee or soft drinks so if you want a cocktail you have to go up to the floor above going up several flights of stairs even if you take the lift and bring it back down and lots of people sit in the reception area with their drinks as there is no where else to 'lounge'. Also if the weather should be bad there is very little under cover seating around the pool side bar, so where do you go? Saying that we only had one evening of rain on 25th Nov.

We got the free bus down to Palaya Amadores beach several times and although lots of people were waiting we always managed to get on. It's then a 1.2 klm walk from where the foot path starts to Puerto Rico and a taxi will costs less than 4 Euros to get back.

When you arrive the reception staff (most helpful) will give you a pool towel one per person which you can change daily near the pool so don't use your baggage allowance taking your own pool towels. You can also get free bottled water at any time from reception.

We chose a RIU hotel as we feel that you can expect a good standard of hotel and we were not disappointed, A very good relaxing break, but not many English staying there last week lots of
Scandinavians, and yes El Divo were excellent.

Oh, also if you arrive about 4pm and go up to get some food from the pool bar and wonder why it's so busy, bingo is about to start but it's a good time to find a sun bed!

Room Tip: Ask for a room near the lifts, we had 273

Stayed at this hotel in january for a winter break with my grandma and mother.

We stayed in gran canaria the year before in maspalomas and prefer that area more to puerto rico.

The hotel was kept very clean and the all inclusive was fantastic and so were the views from our room on the 5th floor.would say the hotel is mainly popular with the germans and scandinavians.
Pros:
The food was to a very high standard
Very clean
Exellent views
Free bottled water and coach service to amadores beach
Cons:
Up a very steep hill and is a mission to walk up.
At night time lights down the hill to the hotel go out at midnight so you can not see where you are going.
We felt the restaurant had a very rushed canteen feel although the choice and quality of the food makes up for this. Also we wasn't keen on the seating arrangment and allocated meal times, as there were two sittings, however this was so the food was fresh and not left out.
The main problem we had was we felt as all inclusive it would have been nice to have stayed in the hotel in the evening and make the most of the free cocktails, the entertainment was shocking ....really let's the hotel down. And is animated in german only.

Gran canaria on the whole is a lovely place for a winter holiday, the climate is spot on, about 25-27 degrees at that time of year.
In the evening we use to walk up the hill and go to the europa centre, where there were a few lively bars, barbacoa bar had different tribute acts on every night like abba ect, which was more to our taste.
We got the coach to amadores beach a few times and was beautiful, best beach in gran canaria, sunbeds were a reasonable price for the day and the beach is lined with cafes and restaurants. At the very end of amadores beach is a beach club which was a lovely place to go for an afternoon drink or lunch.
Another trip we done was walk round to puerto rico and get the boat to puerto mogan.....this trip is a must. It does get fairly busy on a friday as its market day but its a beautiful little town known as little venice, we stopped at a place called cafe de mogan on the harbour front and watched the world go by.

I would definatly go back to the hotel but feel it could be improved ....ecpecially the entertainment.

Myself, my husband and 2 sons (aged 3 and 6) have just returned from a 1 week stay at Riu Vistamar and cannot fault it. The views are amazing from every floor and i should imagine, every room as they all have sea vies. We stayed on the 2nd floor overlooking Amadores Beach and had the most incredible sunsets every evening. We had a large double room (i believe they're the family rooms and are all located on the 1st and 2nd floor) it had a balcony, double bed and 2 single beds pushed together for the boys, plenty of storage space, a fridge and a safe. The bathroom had a bath, overhead shower, toilet and bidet. The rooms were cleaned etc every day, our boys loved going back to the room to see what creation our cleaner, Flora, had made with the towels! The entire hotel is spotlessly clean in all areas.

All the staff were extremely friendly and helpful at all times, they're great with the children. The food is plentiful and always a great selection. For breakfast and lunch you can sit wherever you wish in the restaurant but for evening meals you are allocated a table for the duration of your holiday. If you don't like where you've been situated you can speak to the restaurant manager and they do their very best to move you. It's actually quite nice to know your table will be there waiting for you no matter what time you go down to tea! They have 2 sittings for evening meals, 6:30pm and 8:30pm. Again, you can let them know when you arrive which you would prefer and they will accommodate this.

The courtesy coach to the beach and back is fantastic, we used it most days. It runs approx every half an hour to an hour. If you'd like a taxi reception call one and it only costs around 3 euros each way to the beach and back.. they appear instantly too!!

Amadores beach is very pretty and again, spotlessly clean. As it's a horseshoe bay it's fairly sheltered although the pull-back from the waves (although they were small when we were there) can catch you out, so be aware of this.

All in all we had a fantastic time at this hotel and can't think of any negatives at all. If you're thinking of booking don't hesitate!

Room Tip: All floors have AMAZING views, email ahead if you have a preference of beach view or sea view and th...
