“Couldn't fault the hotel itself”
Reviewed April 5, 2011

We also stayed the same week at this hotel as the previous reviewer who was very unfortunate to have been so ill for so long. Both my husband and I did have the d & v problem for 24 hours, and were rather off food for at least a couple of days afterwards. That said, we have yet to find out if it was in fact food poisoning or really the virus the reps were putting it down to. Whether we ever find out is another matter. Any illness suffered on holiday will obviously taint your view of the whole experience
However putting this aside, I have to say the hotel was better than I expected and as this site should really be to rate the accommodation I will do so. I was rather worried, having already booked it, when I then read the review about not suitable for couples and then I started dreading it. I think they may have coincided with a school holiday from maybe Germany as we did not have any problems with children until last Saturday when it did seem rather noisy round the children’s pool area, and the evening meal was a bit of a game of dodgems with kids running round the restaurant with full plates of food. I narrowly missed one 'angel' carrying a bowl full of tomato ketchup (whilst wearing white trousers – me not her). My next encounter was a little boy with a bowl full of ‘lashings of ice cream and sprinkles’. He was so impatient that he was spooning it in whilst he was walking back to his table, completely oblivious of anyone else in his path. This could have been due to the hotel’s policy of allocating table sitting times prior to arrival and if this doesn’t suit you, it is a matter of sorting out with the restaurant Manager for the next evening, which I have to say was much quieter. The next day, I think most families went down to the beach and calm was restored around the pool. TIP: if you want either an early or late sitting, you can request this by emailing the hotel prior to your arrival. We didn’t know this and were stuck with an early meal on our first day. They do take note of your requests as I did email to request a 5th floor room with sunny balcony which is what I got.
As the last two reviews cover what the hotel has to offer, I would just like to add that the level of cleanliness was excellent. Not for two minutes was an empty plate left on a table before being cleared in both restaurant and pool bar. Tops were wiped, floors were constantly being mopped and all the food serving areas were spotless. Cutlery was clean, glasses and plates too. Our room was spacious, always clean and because there was a door separating the bathroom area to the bedroom, kept any noise from the corridor to an absolute minimum. If I were to make a suggestion to the hotel it would be to replace the rather antique tv’s with flat screens but I am sure this will come.
The staff couldn't have been more helpful and there was a smile from everyone from reception, restaurants, bars and cleaners. The entertainment crew themselves were good fun and friendly and yes, the evening shows were rather childish and possibly German orientated, but it was different each night and so what, it was only for an hour. If you want more, just get a cab to one of the other towns and find something to your liking – it is what most would normally do in a resort.
The food was plentiful and so much choice every day, from breakfasts through to the evening meal. Fantastic selection of salads for starters, with some days prawns (though mine overcooked and dry), muscles etc and a very good gazpacho. There were always several hotplate cooked meats or fishes, (some good, some rather chewy), a roast, great pizzas and usually some sort of casserole. Lots of cakes, if that's your sort of thing, different ice creams and cheeses or fruit for dessert. We didn’t think the wine was that bad at all but red was better than white. You couldn't starve at this place, and if you got bored with the food a taxi ride into Puerto Rico was under E4, though we didn’t bother.
All in all, sickness aside, we had a great week, met some lovely people and would go again, as long as it didn’t coincide with any European school holidays. I had a gripe, it would have to be about ill mannered Germans who still seem totally oblivious of anyone else, especially when food is involved. If you are in there way, tough! At breakfast they will happily push in front of you whilst you are queuing for an egg or bacon and not give it another thought.

Have just returned from 1 week stay at Riu Vista Mar Gran Canaria 28th March - 4th April and would like to give details of our stay. It is always difficult to give opinions on hotels as it is dependent on your own standard of living and your own expectations and experiences so this is our opinion of this hotel. Booked our holiday with Thomas Cook.

Transfer from Airport approx 35 mins, hotel built up cliff face with reception on top floor, check - in efficient and polite, room safe at no extra charge, luggage porter delivered suitcases to room 10 minutes after our arrival at room. Requested room on 5th Floor as recommended by previous reviewer, this request was granted by hotel, room clean, 2 single beds, good wardrobe and drawers for clothing etc., fridge in room, balcony - table & 2 chairs with views out to ocean and down to Puerto Rico, bathroom although dated very clean with very good shower.

2 Sunbathing Terraces with Swimming Pools, lots of sunbeds and parasols but very close together with little privacy, 1 Solarium Area with sunbeds and some parasols. Swimming Pools closed at 6 pm no swimming after this time !!!

Food & Drink - Restaurant on 8th Floor for Breakfast and Dinner, Lunch was at Snack Bar/Pool Bar Area. Two sittings for Dinner, time allocated at check-in can be changed by discussing with Head Waiter, we changed from 6.30 pm to 8.30 pm.
Breakfast - Usual cereals, fresh fruit, cold meats, cheeses bread & pastries, limited hot food of poor selection and quality, no ommlettes freshly made to order, eggs undercooked or overcooked, poor quality bacon. No cutlery on tables had to fetch your own.
Lunch at Pool Bar Area - very poor, fast food poor quality, small selection of salad, fresh fruit, ice cream, soft drinks, wine & beer on tap, the wine in our opinion was unpalatable. water, tea coffee freely available. Some days an unpleasant smell coming from drains. Refrained from using this area for eating.
Dinner - 3 Hot Food Stations, Cold Food Area, Speciality of the evening hot food area, Dessert & Fruit Area, Cheese & Biscuit Area, Wine & Beer on Tap, Water served by your waiter. The wine was undrinkable we asked if there was a wine list so we could purchase better quality wine but this was not an option, so no wine for us. Food not to our liking, we are of the opinion the quality was very poor, soup was good, so was fresh fruit. 3rd evening tried freshly cooked fish, didn't like taste so did not finish, 6 am the dreaded D & V and abdominal pains never managed to get out of room for 36 hours, thank goodness I had medications with me to deal with this. Managed to accompany my husband for his dinner on the 5th evening, all I could eat was melon, he had what looked like Chicken Kiev, lo and behold next morning he was ill with abdominal pain, nausea and was unable to get out of bed then at 6pm continuous sickness then 2 hours later D & V with vengence. I discovered that there were several other guests with the same problem, reported to Thomas Cook Rep who stated that they were aware of the ongoing problem with a 24 hour D & V Virus in the hotel and one other hotel on the island, the pharmacy which was 10 minutes away was supplying the hotel guests with Re-hydration Tablets if required. Our D & V was in our opinion NOT Viral but was due to food.
So no dining for us on our 6th evening. Our waiter was very kind and organised a flask hot water and cammomile tea bags for us to have in our room, and lots of melon. Thank goodness for melon.
I have to say all staff in the hotel were very polite and helpful, bottled water freely available for your room at reception, chambermaid was always anxious to clean our room and provided us with plenty of clean towels and bed linen.
Our last evening we managed to have light meal, no further problems thank goodness we were fit enough to fly home.

So to sum up, we didn't have a good holiday, we were only in good health for the first 3 days out of our 7 day stay and we were desperate to come home. This was our first stay at a Riu Hotel and due to our experience we would not return.

We normally holiday with good quality hotel chains either 4/5 star hotels in Lanzarote or Mexico and have never had any health problems during our stays, so we will be returning to hotels that we know are good.

I have mixed feelings about this hotel, there are lots of positives but a few negatives that do hold the hotel back.

Negatives:

There are a lot of German and Scandinavian guests at the hotel which isn't necessarily a huge problem but the entertainment is then targeted for that audience, the German sense of humour is worrying.

The entertainment is unbelievably bad.... I would say with the only exception being the acrobats which were very fun. Its very much like an old cabaret show style room. Very strange to be honest.

Dinner was not what we expected. There are two seating times, 6.30 or 8.30 which you are allocated on arrival. You were also allocated a table for the duration of your stay which we were not happy about. We thought the idea of an all inclusive would be you come and go as you please but it was very much like a school canteen, with tables very close together and bright lighting, so not at all a romantic meal. We were very disappointed we weren't informed that for most of our stay the restaurant outside was closed, so can't comment on whether it was worth booking.

The rooms, I feel were not great. Although a lovely view of the sea, I feel need a refurbishment. Twin beds, plugs not fitted in the wall properly, have to hit TV to make it work and the bathroom wasn't very clean at all.

The lifts were AWFUL, had to wait ages for a lift and always felt you were lucky to make it to the floor you needed!

If you are travelling with Thomas Cook, avoid Keely if you can, she is useless and did not sort out anything for us. If you have any problems or need any advice on how to get around Gran Canaria, go straight to reception.

Air conditioning in the rooms was very poor. Hardly anything came out. Thankfully it was cool at night so it wasn't a huge problem but my guess is when it gets hotter it will be a real issue.

Beds very hard but we like a hard bed so didn't bother us but know it would bother others.

Positives:

Lovely pool area, two pools, we preferred the one on the top floor as it was quieter. Lots of sunbeds, no fear of not getting one!

Lots of day time activities such as football, water aerobics, darts, bingo... if that's you kind of thing

Staff were very helpful and attentive, could not fault one bit.

Maid service was very good.

Bus to the beach was great! Beach was also very nice! Lots of topless women though, but I'm sure my partner did not mind that!

Free towel every day which was handy

Food, great selection and plenty of it. Breakfast and dinner we thought was nice but lunch wasn't amazing.

We loved the baileys coffees with whipped cream!!! A must to try!

We would defiantly go back to Gran Canaria but on route to the water park in Maspolomas we saw another Riu which we would like to try as we preferred the look of the area. Puerto Rico is set on step rocky mountains so not ideal for everyone and I feel the hotel is a good 3* but not 4*

Just returned yesterday from a weeks stay at the Riu Vistamar. Having stayed at Thomson Gold hotels, this hotel falls way short of that. It's real plus point is the staff who are both friendly and helpful. Food at dinner was reasonable but breakfast and lunch was exactly the same day after day. We got bored with the food after 3 days. The tables are close together in the restaurant and unfortunately brits are in the minority so you get rude germans or even ruder scandinavians seated on the adjoining tables.
The rooms are clean and comfortable and are cleaned daily. Shower was brill as it was always hot.
The location isn't ideal being on top of a huge cliff. and nothing round about the hotel except for a sleazy looking bar called baracoa.
The entertainment ranged from very good (tribute to the drifters and comedy acrobats) to appalling (animation team productions). The hotel needs another bar where you can get away from the kids and the entertainment, but all there is is the pool bar which was cool and windy to say the least.
The themed restaurant at the pool bar wasn't great as we had to sit with fleeces on to eat the meal and was supposed to be asian but was no better than a chinese takeaway back home and wasn't worth the effort booking in advance.
We won't be returning to this hotel if we ever return to Gran Canaria

just returned from a week at this hotel, we found the staff friendly, the rooms are clean, check in ok they run through where everything is very quickly it takes a little while in getting use to going up 7 floors to the reception area, then another floor to get to the swimming pool, we were on the first floor, sunbeds around the pool areas are very close together when full as it was with us you did not have enough room to turn beds around without intruding on the person next to you, food good apart from the rare beef on monday night which was raw apart from the black on the outside husband very ill for 24 hours i did not eat it i must agree the tables in the restaurant are inches apart very canteen like, not very good for a romantic meal,, ok if you have a family, iwould not go back to this hotel as a couple, but would say its more suitable for a family with younger children. the quiet spot if you get there early is the solarium deck only has a few sunbeds and plenty of space around, we walked to and from the beach which is pretty steep luckily we enjoy walking
