Not long back from a week in Gran Canaria. Lovely hotel, apartments were really nice. Very clean. The views were fantastic. We went all inclusive and the food was really good. Lots of variety. Although there are a few bars and shops withn a short walking distance, there was not alot to do unless you went into Puerto Rico itself but I wouldnt recommend walking as its at the top of a very steep hill! Well worth looking into hiring a car or getting to grips with the bus timetable as taxis can be expensive if you want to go further out.

Entertainment was not geared to English clientelle - ALOT of Scandinavians so it was all about them. Found the guests quite rude but the staff were really friendly. Wouldnt go again in January/February time as a result but will definitely return later in the year.

Room Tip: Higher appartments have better views than those at the bottom.

Just back from a week in the Altamar, loved it, food was really good, and our apartment was the best i have ever stayed in, only downfall was the scandanavians hotel was full of them and the entertainment was catered for them only, no english, would def go back just not in January because of that.

Room Tip: room 423 was the best biggest balcony in the hotel and brilliant views

Stayed for a fortnight. A week or 10 days would be sufficient, unless all you want to do is lie in the sun. There is very little in the area and it is quite a steep treck up the hill if you are walking (although taxis are only about 3.50 euros). The rooms are ok, sitting area, kitchen, large bathroom and large balcony. Bedrooms are twin bedded. The neighbours are really close and the balconys are not really private. The hotel want to charge you extra for EVERYTHING. umbellas for the patio were extra, and having paid I thought I would get the sunbed matresses in the price, but NO this is another extra.
Buses are cheap, and you can catch the bus easily for a day trip out.
The best thing about this hotel is the FOOD. Freshly cooked, buffet style, help yourself and although you do see somethings twice if you stay a fortnight, it is not that repetative.
help yourself wine, beer, sangria and soft drinks - queue for spirits. It is not that bad, although it does shut promply at 11 and they you have to pay!

Usually stay at this hotel every year, been here many times now. Always return knowing all the guests as usually the same people return year after year.
Last stayed at the altamar in early july 2013, next year returning to puerto rico but trying somewhere different.
Overall puerto rico isnt nearly as busy as it used to be with most things closed down in the Europa centre along the road from the Altamar. If you want a bit of atmosphere the centre down the bottom of Puerto Rico is a lot better.
The rooms themselves have had a massive renovation since my first year and the Altamar where they have changed the whole layout of the apartment. But the past few years they have just added new furniture leaving many cracks in walls etc. Also the bed sheets are only changed once a week and when maids were in the apartment was never properly cleaned apart from the floors. This year I was unable to sleep at night just didnt feel comfortable at all and very uneasy. Travelled with another couple whos TV was turning on itself throughout the stay and taps being turned on by themselves.
I was all-inclusive last year and really didnt enjoy it but the second week, the food was very bland and very much the same every other day.
The entertainment is good but had gone downhill alot since the first stay as obviously the budget has went down and the evening shows are aimed at kids and only last roughly 40 minutes.
The last fault. Usually staying at the Altamar there are no problems but this year there was a family staying beside the pool who were always fighting etc. One night they even had the police up to the hotel to sort out the problem which resulted in a man getting taken from the hotel.
Probably will return to the Altamar but will try different places in the meantime.

Room Tip: Would advise a room on the B block on the top level or just below

We stayed in this hotel for one week 05/12-12.Views from the hotel are great, pool areas nice, palmtrees in the hotels grounds look fantastic, apartments nice and clean, huge balcony. We were on all inclusive package, food is ok, loved the deserts and specially icecreams. Nice walk to amadores beach or puerto rico. For me the biggest down side, that kids entertainment was in scandinavinian language!!! I dont think its fear to my kids. They were very bored while scandinavian kids were having fun. All hotel guest were scandinavian, no english speaking people around. So felt like an outsider. But hotel itself worth 3 star definetly. Evening entertainment good.
