“Great value!”
Reviewed July 30, 2012

A lively aparthotel, there´s always something going on around the pool area (games, music etc). It´s a great place for children to be kept entertained.
The rooms are clean and tidy with a small kitchenette.
We stayed all inclusive for a long weekend and the food wasn´t bad but there was plenty of choice.
Two minutes walk away is the Europa Shopping Centre and one of the best venue´s we´ve come across, The Barbacoa - 3 live shows every night with free entrance. Good drinks prices and good food too.

Me (22) and my boyfriend (24) had our first holiday together during the last week of June and the first week of July 2012. I cannot tell you how amazing our holiday was in this small review but i will try my best. To truly experience it, you will just have to try it for yourself. Hotel was perfect. Clean, tidy, well kept and the staff work non stop. They are so polite and kind and always made you feel welcome. Hotel has two pools, one closer to the entertainment and a quieter one further away which we preferred. We were all inclusive and would definitely recommend it! Food varied every day, chips, burgers, toastie maker, soup, pasta, fruit, ice cream, slushies, alcohol..and even a Canadian night which was nice. BBQ night, Italian night so there is always something for everyone. The entertainment was great. Bingo during happy hour 4-5 every day. Big bucks to be won. Both familes and couples of all ages enjoyed their stay at the altamar. Every room has a gorgeous sea view. Extremely clean and spacious. Although all inclusive, still found the fridge handy and appliances. We did have a slight problem with the shower on arrival, went straight to reception to masks then aware of it and he didn't hesitate to get our room number and a handy man had fixed within the hour! Excellent. There is also a Thomas cook rep on site for all to speak to (even when not booked through Thomas cook) bout any problems or just to book day trips with. Location was perfect. Top of the hill made it tricky to walk down to the beach, and even more difficult to walk up. However a quick taxi trip cost very little and were available right outside hotel throughout the day and night. Two gorgeous beaches a taxi ride/walk away. Spar within hotel. And a supermarket a 5 minute walk away with surrounding restaurants and bars for some karaoke. Hotel entertainment of an evening was eventful. From magicians to parrots, singers to dancers, bird shows to hypnosist. Great fun and on quieter nights, a quiz or karaoke for all to enjoy. Honestly., you need to stay at the Altamar. Been home for 3 weeks and still suffering from holiday blues. Perfect holiday!! Absolutely positively recommend the Altamar hotel to anyone.

i had read the reviews before we booked this holiday and thought it would be ok for the price but it exceeded my expectations!! food was fabulous, something for everyone & freshly cooked at all times, scottish chef non the less!! rooms were spacious extremely clean & balcony huge with own sunbeds. my only moan is that we had a heatwave last couple days and not enough air con units for hire & the fran just wasnt enough, but before the heatwave the ceiling fans were adequate. Unlike the previous comment Gemma the rep was lovely & very helpful. The Europa centre just couple minutes walk just the usual shops & few bars & onlt 3.50 euro to get into puerto rico itself.
All in all i would say if you get a good deal just go for it especially if you have a family, we went with my friends 10 year old & lots for him to join in sports wise whilst wee lay in the sun :)

Spent a week at the Altamar from the 14 July 2012 the staff are all very friendly and will try to help you the best they can. I do however think Thomas Cook should change the Rep at this Hotel as she was absolutely useless. I always travel with Tomas Cook and this is the first time i have complained about there Rep, but we didn't let it spoil our holiday. Puerto Rico is lovely and the weather is always good. We were all inclusive which was great and never had any problem getting sunbeds. The food is much the same as any other all inclusive hotel buffet style and there is something there for everyone. Gazza was fab with the entertainment at night and we really enjoyed it. The entertainment during the day could be better. We stayed on the B side of the Hotel and were on the 3 level which was great as the bar, restaurant, and pools were on level 4 and didn't need the lift which like all hotels can be busy. The taxis are almost 4 euro to take you in to town but there is a small shopping centre just up the road that you can walk to.Do not book your tips with the reps at the hotel they will charge more just take the leaflet to reception and they will book it for you there and its much cheaper. All in all we had a fantastic holiday and meet some lovely people and would diffidently go back to this hotel. But Seriously Thomas Cook Change your Rep.PS u may want to get the air con for your room as they only have fans in the rooms and it can get very warm.

Room Tip: Try to get your room on the B side on level 3 as the bar and pools and restaurant are on level 4

We have just returned from a fantastic 2wk stay in the altamar. There was 9 of us in total from the age of 8 up to 52. I would highly reccomend this hotel for the view alone, it was fantastic, you had a sea view from where ever you were in the hotel. The rooms were clean and spacious, your usual average apartment with all the facilities. The cleaners cleaned and changed sheets and towels every other day. Food was your average 3 star, but you could not ask for more that what was on offer, they had meats, fish, pasta, salad, soup, fresh bread, fruit, cakes and desserts. There are two pools of adequate size, there is no life guard but it meant that floats and balls could be used in the pools with no nassle. It is very hot at the moment so would recommend a high factor for kids. If you like the beach amadores beach is much nicer than perto rico but go at 9am when it is quiet to have your pick of sunbeds on beach, it gets really busy by 11am and there will be no sunbeds left. There is also a great cocktail bar it is the last bar on the left hand side if you are facing the sea, nice staff and best cocktails I tasted while I was there. At the hotel I found the cleaners to be the most friendly, and the reception staff to be really helpful, the only downfall if you are all inclusive is the bar staff and the waiters, no matter how hard I tried most of them are rude and arrogant with the exception of two who would smile and be polite. The only other thing I would recommend for this hotel is air con, the fans were ok but sometimes the heat became unbearable as it was the beggining of a heat wave with temps rising to 45%, at these times it is best to be in the pool. All in all it was a fantastic holiday and I would definatley recommend the altamar for all ages.

Room Tip: Floor four is a central location for the pool, restaurant and bar,

On arrival in our room we were greeted by a funny smell which we put down to some dodgy Spanish plumbing so we thought no more about it and headed off to catch a late dinner at the all inclusive restaurant. On our return to the room the smell was overpowering and was coming from the sofa in the apartment living area. It seems the previous guest had decided to empty his or her bladder on the sofa and then flip the mattress over to cover their tracks. Not a good state of affairs considering this was to be my bed for the week. A quick trip to reception sorted the problem with the night porter arriving shortly with another mattress. Not a great start to our week.

This issue certainly did not ruin our holiday, the food and drink in the all inclusive were of good quality with very little queueing for either. The second pool could do with having its own bar to ease the crowding at the main pool.

Entertainment at night was hit and miss with the usual parrot and reptile shows. The two acrobat shows were very good. Afternoon bingo and happy hour were very popular. The two girls who ran the Kids club were great, my little girl loved them so a big thank you to Kirsty and Jess.

The lifts that service the hotel seemed to have a mind of their own, either stopping at random or just not at all. Got some good laughs out of it though.

I would certainly return to the Altamar, would just make sure to check the sofa before sitting on it.

We have just returned from a week at The Altamar and I will be very honest about our holiday experience and how we found it.
We arrived after a 2 hour delay at Gatwick airport at around 11.30pm and were expecting some food and drink to be laid on as we hadn't had anything since 1pm, asked reception if there was anything and all we got was a grunt and he pointed to the vending machines, We know that the entertainment is in the restaurant, however there is a conference room where they could lay on food for late arrivals, very poor and not a good start. We were then given a map and a key to our room and on inspection we realised we were on the very bottom floor right next to the lift shaft, I had phoned twice prior to our holiday to ask for a room near reception and the restaurant due to a health issue and was told that would be ok and that it was written on our booking, i also asked not to be next to the lift shaft after following advice from previous reviews on here, i was showed the booking form and nothing was written on there and they could do nothing about it as they were fully booked, so not a good start.
We arrived at our room after my husband struggled lifting both cases up and down the stairs to the room after you get out of the lift, The apartment was very clean and had everything we needed except for any complimentary toiletree's so we had no soap to wash our hands with on arrival, we ended up getting some soap from the maid the next day, The apartment had 2 ceiling fan's which were ok until we got the calima and it reached temperature's of over 110 then it was no good.
The main plus point was the view it was lovely from what ever level you were on, the downside was the hotel was not in the resort which we hadn't realised we also thought the commercial centre was at the bottom of the hill and found out it was in the resort no where near the hotel.
The hotel entertainment was good and better than some of the 4 star hotel's we have stayed in, we liked the Boy George tribute act , Chris Mooney and The commadores act, Gazza and his crew were good.
The food was very poor, not much choice very cold as it was kept warm with heat lamps rather than heated trays and not good quality, we found the AI drink's to be good with plenty of choice. There is a very good Spar shop on site with excellent choice if you are self catering or wanted something extra, also it was lovely and cool in there to get away from the heat.
We went with Thomas Cook and our rep was Gemma she was most helpful and we couldn't fault her, however we found it odd that we were told to stay away from Timeshare tout's as we would always do and yet in reception was a timeshare company with their own desk next to Thomas cook and their tout who i think was called Gavin was at the Thomas cook welcome meeting and did a presentation whilst the rep was present about the timeshare resort of Anfi, they will put you in a taxi and if you go you get 45 euro voucher off a Thomas cook trip, mixed messages i'm afraid they tell you to stay away from tout's yet invite them to the meeting, no wonder Thomas Cook have been struggling, they need to promote their holidays instead.
There are two swimming pools and yes you do need to reserve sunbed's, we also noticed there were no shady areas to put your sunbeds in which was bad so you always had to lay in direct sunlight not good for small children, it got very busy after 2 day's as we didn't know the kid's in some area's had broken up from school we found the pools too packed after that especially filled with inflatable's and balls etc.. you could not swim at all. We also noticed the hotel to be start to look untidy, slushpuppies were launched all over the cable car/lift on a daily basis, we watched as pool cues were being used to knock down the coconut's in the tree's, food was thrown all over the place, other guest's we were talking too also noticed a change too, so we were glad to leave at the end of our stay.
We used the local ferry service lineas Ferries to go to Mogan and to the other fishing village, very good service and the ferries were very clean and on time.
If you are a smoker and need a last ciggie at Gran canaria airport then once you go through customs there is an outside area the stairway up to it is opposite gate A11.
We wouldn't return to the Altamar due to location, Food standard and quality and having no aircon in the room's.

Room Tip: Hope for the best, we did call the hotel prior for a room request and nothing was done about it.
