Just returned from a great week in Puerto Rico staying at Babalu. It was our first visit to the island and we will definitely return and definitely come back to Babalu. We were very pleasantly surprised at the standard of accomodation considering the apartments are at the budget end of the price range. The rooms are clean and fresh with a well stocked kitchen area for self-catering and a large balcony with table & chairs, perfect for lazy breakfasts and early evening drinks. The balconies are also a real suntrap and we recorded temperatures of 27 in the shade to 38 in the sun most days (not bad for the last week in October!). Certain items are available to hire so, if you are on a budget you may want to take that into consideration i.e. safety deposit box in room (13euros/week + 12euro deposit), kettle (10 euros/week + 10 euro deposit), sunbed for the balcony, fan, toasters. They are also available to hire by the day so you may want to wait & see if you really need any of them - for example at this time of year it really wasn't necessary to hire sunbeds as there were always plenty available by the pool plus it was too hot on the balcony anyway. Most brochures warn that Babalu is not suitable for people with mobility problems due to its location at the top of the hill. It's true that the bus does not come up this far but there are plenty taxis and we were assured it would only be about 4-6 euros maximum to travel to anywhere in Puerto Rico. The Europa Centre with plenty of bars and restaurants and the big supermarket is just across the road. There is a lift in the apartments but this only goes from the 6th to the 1st floor (the entrance and reception are on the 6th floor) so you would still need to negotiate one short flight of steps if you had one of the poolside rooms with terrace. If you are up for the exercise though there are a couple of different routes down to the two beaches and harbour area. People have commented on the music from the pool bar - we think they must have taken this on board as we found that it was turned down at about 9pm. The pool area was well kept and cleaned early every morning and with 2 main pools and a small kids pool there was plenty places to cool off. One major plus point of Babalu is that the pool area is not overlooked from the road which cannot be said for a great number of hotels and apartments in the resort - budget and high end alike. All in all, a really pleasant place to stay with kind and helpful staff and we would thoroughly recommend it. 2 things to do we would also recommend are 1) catching the ferry to Mogan for a leisurely lunch and some people watching as well as a wander round the pretty houses and nice shops (avoid Friday if you don't want to go to the market) and 2) hiring a car & getting up into the mountains and across to Teror before coming back over the mountains and down to Maspalamos to see the dunes at sunset. It cost us about £35/day + petrol but you can shop around. We only used 1/4 tank for 212K of driving and we went over the mountains via windy roads twice. Enjoy!

Room Tip: Rooms at the lower numbered end of each floor (e.g. 201-206, 301-306 etc) get the sun for longer in...

just back from a lovely two week break at the babalu (booked with sunshine travel),have been going now for 20 years, its basic not changed a lot in that time, except the new lift,at last ! staff as always helpful, the only thing i found changed was the level of the pool bar music and some of its content, the babalu has always been a nice peaceful place, yes the bar has always had music but for some reason they seem to find the need to up the level at certain times of the day,and especially late at night,i am just glad we didn't have young children, not only from the noise level but some of the rap songs were very inappropriate, did spoil the relaxing holiday we have come to expect, that said i would recommend the babalu as long as you realise its very basic, and the have a word with the bar staff.

Room Tip: request the bottom floor rooms 1/16 if you like wandering out of your apt into the pool,or top floor...

We stayed at the Babalu for the second from from 22nd September 2013 for 2 weeks, there has been improvements with the new lift, fresh paint and new furniture. The rooms are basic but adequate but good value for money given the price. The rooms could do with "touching" up hear and there but the maids clean often with clean towels and bedding. The pool area is fantastic, clean and at the time or the year quiet and plenty of room, there is one heated about 7ft deep with the larger second is about 4ft and another child's paddling pool. The pool bar is great value and the food and drinks are very well priced and good quality. It's a short walk to numerous restaurants and shops and only 2-3 Euros taxi ride to two very good beaches.
The staff we found were very friendly and check in was quick and easy after a long bus transfer journey.

All in all another wonderful stay at a great location given the cost and I would recommend it with no hesitation.

Just back from a weeks stay at the Babalu.
After a nightmare transfer both ways the last time we visited Puerto Rico we paid a little more to use the Speedy Shuttle this year which meant the trip between the airport and the Babalu was approx. 45 minutes, which I would highly recommend.
Stayed here on numerous occasions with no complaints and this year was no different. The rooms were clean and tidy as always and whilst you do need to hire a kettle and a toaster if you want them, you can get round this if you want to, by using pans. Whilst the rooms are basic, they are perfectly adequate, especially when you consider the price you pay for them.
The pool area is excellent and we had no problems getting sunbeds between 10.00 and 10.30 each day. Pool bar opens at 10.00 each morning and appears to remain open until the last customers leave at night, whatever the time. Prices are reasonable and staff excellent.
Overall, another excellent stay at the Babalu, where I am sure we will be returning next year.

Room Tip: We have stayed on various floors and they all have different benefits. The ground floor means you ca...

Just returned from the babalu apartments with my wife and 3 kids aged 2-4&8 transfers from airport to the babalu where spot on we jumped into a little mini bus which was about 30min drive, checkin was easy and pleasant on entering the rooms we where surprised on just how small the rooms where there was 1 room with 2 double beds and the room where the kitchen was there was just a sofa which didn't turn into a bed also a cot for the 2 year old . The apartments are not for 2 adults and 3 kids big enuf for 2 adults and 1 child. The location was good with the Europa centre just across the road there was plenty of places to eat, we found the best 1 just on the left as you enter the centre, stay away from the 1st few as you walk up the main path, god no's how it's won an award from trip advisor. When turning right out of the babalu you go down a steep bank and that takes you into the harbour and the main strip which is good, only €4 in a taxi. Pool area and bar restaurant where excellent food was very nice and priced very good. Over hall would a go back prob yes. Only bad point which I must point out on your departure if a big orange bus comes for you you no you have a 3 hour bus ride back to the airport which is not good..

I have just got back from a weeks stay at the Babalu apartments and could not fault them. The apartments were clean and spacious and each had their own balcony with pool view. The apartments were in an ideal location just a few minutes from the Europa centre where you will find excellent restaurants such as El Brasero and bars such as Xtreemz. Barbacoa is also worth checking out, they do excellent breakfasts and shows on a night including the excellent Chubby GC. The only thing that shocked me slightly was that even though the apartments are self catering they do not come with a kettle or a toaster these have to be rented. The apartments look as though they are been modernised as there was a little maintenance work taking place. I would definately recommend these apartments and would return.
