Just returned from a great week in Puerto Rico staying at Babalu. It was our first visit to the island and we will definitely return and definitely come back to Babalu. We were very pleasantly surprised at the standard of accomodation considering the apartments are at the budget end of the price range. The rooms are clean and fresh with a well stocked kitchen area for self-catering and a large balcony with table & chairs, perfect for lazy breakfasts and early evening drinks. The balconies are also a real suntrap and we recorded temperatures of 27 in the shade to 38 in the sun most days (not bad for the last week in October!). Certain items are available to hire so, if you are on a budget you may want to take that into consideration i.e. safety deposit box in room (13euros/week + 12euro deposit), kettle (10 euros/week + 10 euro deposit), sunbed for the balcony, fan, toasters. They are also available to hire by the day so you may want to wait & see if you really need any of them - for example at this time of year it really wasn't necessary to hire sunbeds as there were always plenty available by the pool plus it was too hot on the balcony anyway. Most brochures warn that Babalu is not suitable for people with mobility problems due to its location at the top of the hill. It's true that the bus does not come up this far but there are plenty taxis and we were assured it would only be about 4-6 euros maximum to travel to anywhere in Puerto Rico. The Europa Centre with plenty of bars and restaurants and the big supermarket is just across the road. There is a lift in the apartments but this only goes from the 6th to the 1st floor (the entrance and reception are on the 6th floor) so you would still need to negotiate one short flight of steps if you had one of the poolside rooms with terrace. If you are up for the exercise though there are a couple of different routes down to the two beaches and harbour area. People have commented on the music from the pool bar - we think they must have taken this on board as we found that it was turned down at about 9pm. The pool area was well kept and cleaned early every morning and with 2 main pools and a small kids pool there was plenty places to cool off. One major plus point of Babalu is that the pool area is not overlooked from the road which cannot be said for a great number of hotels and apartments in the resort - budget and high end alike. All in all, a really pleasant place to stay with kind and helpful staff and we would thoroughly recommend it. 2 things to do we would also recommend are 1) catching the ferry to Mogan for a leisurely lunch and some people watching as well as a wander round the pretty houses and nice shops (avoid Friday if you don't want to go to the market) and 2) hiring a car & getting up into the mountains and across to Teror before coming back over the mountains and down to Maspalamos to see the dunes at sunset. It cost us about £35/day + petrol but you can shop around. We only used 1/4 tank for 212K of driving and we went over the mountains via windy roads twice. Enjoy!
