We have just returned from 2 weeks in Portonovo Apartments in Puerto Rico
Apartments we well situated i.e. on the flat, right near the beach, close to supermarkets and a wide range of good restaurants.
Our room was modern clean and spacious and cleaned thoroughly everyday
Clean towels were left every 3 days and the beds changed twice during our stay
No noise at night from bars or restaurants but some noise from the road as we were in an end apartment just had to keep windows closed and as no air conditioning we hired a fan for the two weeks and it was fine.
Felt secure and staff on reception we always very helpful. Lovely well kept gardens.
Pool was glorious swam every day
Only one thing I would suggest to owners is to introduce ways to recycle i.e. tins, cartons, glass, plastic etc. local recycling bins nearby so I made a trip (2 mins walk) each day.
Indian restaurant in the complex got great reviews but we didn't sample as hubby doesn't like Indian food (worse luck!)
Would recommend Don Quixote restaurant nearby for extremely tasty food and excellent service for that special meal out - garlic bread to die for!! prices similar to home
Yogi & Bennys nearby does good breakfast & lunchs
The main shopping center in Puerto Rico is were there are lots of bars and restaurants but felt a bit hassled at times as they were looking for your custom - found a couple of chinese buffet style restaurants good value for money if you need to watch your euros!!
Took a boat trip to the Port of Mogan known locally as little Venice - well worth it

I stayed here for a week with my mum - we wanted a relaxing week in the sun, at a clean, safe hotel and this is exactly what we got. There are lots of good points about this hotel -
* There is a night porter on shift and someone always on reception so you feel safe
* Safety deposit boxes can be purchased for 13 euro for a week, which I found quite cheap in comparison to other places I've stayed
* The rooms are very clean and well equipped with everything you would need in a kitchen!
* Staff within the hotel is friendly & helpful
* The pool is clean & spacious
* There were always lots of sunbeds available

However there were some negative points also -
* The rooms could be cleaned & towels changed more regularly
* There is no air - con, making sleeping at night difficult
* There was no entertainment in the evening

Overall I would go back to these apartments, as the good outweighed the few negative points. The surrounding area of Puerto Rico however, didn't have much to offer. There are some shops and restaurants on the apartment complex. We were recommended 'Yogi & Benny's' by our Thomson rep, however the food wasn't great so we were left disappointed. The rep told us the restaurants near the Marina were poor and not worth a visit, however after experiencing the bad food at Yogi's we thought we might as well give it a try. We went to a couple of the local ones - there is one called La Cantina and one two rows down from there - both brilliant food, good quality fish & meat etc.
There is a 'shopping centre' 10 mins up from the marina. We visited it one day throughout the day - we never returned! Very dated and shabby. The people in the perfume shops pounce on you as you enter and are quite rude.
We went on 1 excursion to Las Palmas(the main city) - tour guide was Craig, very lovely man who has good local knowledge. Would recommend it if you like shopping!
Another negative was when we were going home. We were picked up at 10pm in a small minibus. There was just the Spanish driver who spoke little English...there was NO rep to accompany us to the airport which I thought was odd. There were NO seatbelts and the driver sped down the motorway at 100 mph -we were actually really scared. There was a small child of about 3 in front of us who had to sit on his Mum's knee. I thought that was exceptionally poor service by Thomson.
Overall we had a great holiday and would return to the Portonono apartments.

Great location, had a pool view and an beautiful view of yachts in the harbour. Only 5 minute walk to beach. Apartment nicely furnished. Very comfortable beds. Would highly recommend.

Room Tip: for the best view ask for a top floor apartment.

Hotel has been refurbished since our last visit in 2008 (see previous review). In the rooms, the old CRT TV's have been replaced by 32" flat screens (only one English channel though & you need a deposit for the remote). However, the money for these would have better spent on ceiling fans, as is still cooling in the room - we had a small USB powered fan which helped. The other dissapointment was the jug-kettle - this seemed to have been downgraded to a model with no on/off switch, or even a cut-off sensor. This means it will start boiling water as soon as you plug it in, and does not stop unless you pull the plug out again - not very safe.

On the plus side, the pool now features a waterfall at the deep end (which only runs for 2 hours a day) and a sloping ramp at the shallow end. The sun beds have been replaced by better ones, and have removable mattresess (which have velcro to keep them in place).
The hotel restaurant serves decent food, although we found the best breakfast at nearby Yogi & Benny's.

The hotels' superb location (right next to the harbour and near the main beach) does mean the locals will occaisionally sneak in straight from the beach during the weekend to avoid the sun bed charges on the beach. This led to pool becoming murky, & was probably the reason I ended up with an ear infection the following Monday! However, the pool was cleaned the next day.

Despite these annoyances, we still enjoyed our stay, and would use the hotel again.
