Apartamentos Tamanaco
Reviewed March 14, 2009

My fiancé and I stayed in the Tamanaco Apartments in early March 2009.

Apartments are great value (we were looking for a holiday in March for as cheep as possible but where we could still get some sun and beach), spacious, clean, friendly staff and decent location (about 5 mins from the main shopping area and 15 mins from the beach). BBC and Sky said the weather would be about 20 degrees but it was 24+ everyday.

Only gripe about the apartments was the bed - we found it to be incredibly uncomfortable (i.e. really hard and springs poking up a bit), none of the other reviews have said this so perhaps its just apartment 408. The sleeper couch was comfortable though, decent kitchen with Fridge/Freezer, 2 hob stove, microwave, kettle toaster and basic utensils. There are plenty of shops in the Puerto Rico to buy food if you are keen on the self catering thing. The balconies are big and get plenty sun in the afternoon, the shower was out of this world!

Unfortunately Puerto Rico itself is a bit of a mess; the shopping center/restaurants area looks like it was the site of a competition for who can have the brightest neon light and biggest satellite dish and its just one Irish pub after another. If you are a very light sleeper you might struggle as the music from the bars can be heard until about 4am but its not too bad. We ended up using Puerto Rico as a base though and it has good bus connections to other parts of Gran Canaria.

All in all we had a great stay. The hotel is perfect if you are looking for cheep but comfortable. Puerto Rico has a great beach and about 15 min walk west from that beach along the promenade there is even a better one called Amadores. If going to Puerto Rico i would suggest hiring a car for a day or 2 as there is a lot more of Gran Canaria. We hired a car for 30 euro a day and I can highly recommend Puerto de Mogan and a drive into the mountains although give yourself about 2 hours to get up there, its a long and winding road and is an all day thing, not something you can just go and do of an afternoon as we tried to do.

We booked a 2 week stay at Tamanaco due to all the good reviews online, and they didn't fail us!

The rooms were clean, spacious, well equiped, and recently refurbished.

The pool area was really nice, a lovely couple runing the bar/cafe and a nice small pool thats not too deep. (You can't really swim in the pool, but its ideal for cooling off). Showers by the pool to cool down if required, and a little avery (randomly) which was a nice touch.

Free internet access in reception, modern lifts going up to the floors, great views from balconies.

Maids came in every day except Thursday and Sunday.

As we were staying end of season, and they were quiet, we were allowed to keep our room until we left at 11.30pm for no extra charge, as checkout is normally at mid day. Worth asking!

I have stayed in worse 5 stars, this really is more like a 4-5 star than the advertised 3.

Myself and two other friends wanted to go on a relatively cheap holiday where it was going to be hot and the apartments clean and livable. Tamanaco was brilliant.

It's nothing out of the ordinary but the apartments were very spacious, very clean, modern with big balconies. We had our towels and bedding changed 3 times in the space of a week. The staff are extremely helpful if you need anything. I had the sofa bed in the lounge which was comfortable and I got a double bed to myself at night!!!

The pool is relatively small but perfect for a dip and a little swim. There is a bar/shop that serves the basics. The hotel is nice and quiet.

The only thing that I could put against it is that the TV in the apartments are pay as you go. It costs 1euro to watch it for about half an hour but it wasn't really worth it as there were very few channels......but who wants to watch TV on holiday anyway.

The location of the hotel is perfect unless you have problems with stairs as there is a hundred steps going up to the hotel from the main street but it's not a lot at all. It's near enough so a walk to the beach/restaurants/bars is approx 12-15 minutes.

For us the major downside to Puerto Rico was the Commercial Centre which was roughly 100metres from the hotel. You can hear a little of the music at night but unless you are an extremely light sleeper it really isn't a problem..particularly when you've had a few drinks!!! The Euro centre is this concrete centre full of nicknack shops, restaurants, and cafes and bars/clubs all rammed into the same place with lots of neon lights. We spent one night there and we did have a laugh but one night was enough. To be honest you can aviod the place entirely and just visit the restaurants near to the beach although if you want lots of bars/clubs the centre will be your only option......

Puerto Rico itself is a really nice place, weather beautiful and clean. its quite a small place so if you're wanting a party holiday it may be a bit too quiet for you. The nice restaurants are near to the beach in both directions the majority are reasonable however there were a few that were a little bit more expensive.

We went into Playa Del Ingles for one night, We caught the bus which was cheap and the taxi back cost around 30 euros. FYI if you are a little scared of mad bus drivers who bomb it on the roads which are on the edge of a mountain that plummets into the sea then best get a taxi...but it was fun!!!
Now we had heard Playa Del Ingles was a lively place however we didn't really see that. We went into the Commercial Centre (which every town seems to have) but it was a lot better and the restaurants were very nice however all the bars/clubs were gay orientated and there were a lot of drag queen shows going on. We couldn't seem to find anywhere else but we must have missed it so check before you.....it was a laugh but there was no give.

In summary, if you are wanting a cheap holiday, good weather, clean and nice apartments with the odd meals out and a few drinks Tamanaco/Puerto Rico is perfect...........................enjoy!!!!

We had one week at the Tamanaco apartments at the beginning of Oct 08. The rooms are spacious and clean. The kitchen has a two ring hob, fridge/freezer, toaster, kettle and a few pots and pans. The staff are very friendly and always keen to help. The rooms were cleaned and beds made over every day, new towels three times a week. The apartments are situated up a hill (as most are in Puetro Rico) not far from the bars and night clubs, which are open until 5-6 am. All in all a great place for a weeks holiday.

I've just returned from an excellent holiday in Puerto Rico with my sister. We stayed at the Tamanaco and found that the apartments were superb. This was our 5th visit to Puerto Rico and would say that the Tamanaco has been the best accommodation so far that we have stayed in. George was the name of the guy at Reception and he was just such a lovely and helpful guy. There was free internet access at reception which was great. The rooms were very spacious, they had a shower (no bath), telephone, fridge/freezer, toaster etc. I found the telly to be a bit crap though as it only had sky news etc, the rest of the channels were in spanish. The commercial centre is only a five minute walk away by about 100 steps and the beach was about 15 minutes away. The centre was really busy at nite and we spent most of our time in Dicey Reilly's. Fab Pub. I would definently reccommend these apartments and would stay in them again The only thing we would say is be careful at the beach because we had our bag stolen.......it didn't ruin our holiday too much.

just got back from the Tamanaco Apartments,Peurto Rico. The rooms were basic but very spacious with seperate bedroom, the bathroom was very modern, with a nice powerful shower. The hotel is in a very good location however its 95 steps (yes i counted them..!) from the main shopping centre. Theres a small pool and area around it, it was enough to cool yourself down though, never had a problem getting a sun lounder.theres a pool bar but this closed at 6 pm, but i think this was because we went in off season..! I would recomend this hotel, but not to children that need entertaining as there was no day or evening entertainment which i found to be the only down fall of this hotel.
The shopping centre is were all the restaurants and bars are..would recomend the Da Pinoccio, really nice pasta and pizza. there is a night life in Peurto Rico but its not as much as it is made out to be, if i was to return i would go to Playa de Ingles, went on a bar crawl around there, would definetly recomend that is you like clubbing.
Only went to the beach at St Augstins costs 3 euros in a taxi was very clean, if you go there have lunch at the Irish Cottage, the food was lovely.
I read the other reviews on this web site and i can say that i agree with everything they have said.

The apartments are really nice spacious and modern, also very clean not a cockroach in sight. The bathrooms are huge no bath though if that bothers you, the towels are cleaned 3 times a week and theyre not stingy with them either!
The balconys are quite big and they have a clothes hanger for drying which I found great.
The downside is that you had to pay for the tv which does seem to be run of the mill in the canaries, but who wants to watch tv on holiday anyway.
The pool area is quite small but there is no problem for space only about 16 people ever came down to the pool at one time and I counted over 50 loungers, the sun comes over about 1030 and stays for the rest of the day. The pool bar is really nice and the staff are so friendly offering a variety of food and drinks, the mini market is only for basic items but ideal for water as its a steep walk back uphill from the local shops.
The reception area has free internet access which I think is a real bonus.
The apartments are very low key on a night, everyone heads downhill to the shopping centre, but the bin men do seem to come and make a lot of noise early every day but only for a few minutes and some noise can be heard from the bars around 2am when there is no other noise around so light sleepers beware. The walk down to the shopping centre is by 60 steps and takes about 5 minutes, the walk to the beach is about 10 minutes but in the shade if you go through the gardens.
All in all we had a very relaxing stay and would definately go back there if we went to puerto rico again.
