Just got back from 2 weeks here and although the reviews are mixed our stay was pretty decent. Firstly the rooms are fairly basic but then you get what you pay for. Also we had 1 cockroach in our room over the whole 2 weeks but the back of my flip flop dealt with him, can't really understand people complaining about this, if you're going to have the windows and doors open at night, things are going to come in! The room was cleaned every day apart from 2 or 3 over the fortnight. There is noise from the shopping centre at night which people have also moaned about but this has nothing to do with the hotel. It's very hot at night but you can hire a fan for 2 euros a night which isn't bad. In general I would recommend staying here unless you're scared of the odd insect, hate the sound of people having fun or just a miserable old git

As soon as we got off the plane to being dropped at our hotel we where provided with a good service as we where handed a welcome pack which is always good due to the difference in language,
Our room was great seeing as we didn't pay massively for our holiday we where very pleased with the size of the room and was very happy with the well equipped self catering equiptment. We had a great balcony which provided us with lovely views of the pool area, puerto rico night life and the sea view.
Location was fantastic :) a 5-10 min stroll and we was in the heart of fab shops, bars and restaurants...we loved the food and cocktails...star bar is an absolute must me and my partner loved it...cocktails where fantastic.
Loved the atmosphere always buzzing

Have just returned from a week at Cala Dor. Can not fault majority of it. The apartments are basic but clean and well equiped. The bar man 'Cheno' was the highlight of the holiday!! Very funny and does his job well!! Entertainment was ok. As iv said, you pay for what you get!! Havi the entertainer was very good with the kids and helpfull with any problems. The only downside was my daughter and a few other guests suffered from ear infections from the pool. We reported this to the manager who quickly acted by taking the appropiate steps ie. water tests etc. The music from the bars below is loud but didnt cause us a problem. It took us a while to find a resturant we enjoyed but 'planet steakhouse' in the shopping center is lovely as are the waiters there. We enjoyed trips to Amdores (the best beech in my eyes), Mogan a lovely little quaint resort and the smaller water park in taurito which is better suited to the main one in maspalomas if you have small children. Its a lot cheaer, you can take your own food and drinks in and sunbeds are free to use! Overall we had a lovely week and would definatly return (if only to see cheno again!!).

Stayed at the Cala D'Or Apartments 28th April 2012 for a week (me, my daughter and my grandaughter). Arrived at the apartments after 9pm on the Saturday and even though there are quite a few steps up to the property this wasn't a problem as we had help from friendly bar staff, and a very helpful receptionist. The onsite shop is very good when you have a late flight as this is open all through the night and is handy for water, milk, etc. The apartments are clean and comfortable, and well equipped, we had a room overlooking the pool, as well as the sea in the distance, and were pleased there is a bath as well as a shower, as my grandaughter is not 2 yet, and doesn't like showers. We had a super week, we walked to Amadores beach nearly every day, and taxied back as they are so cheap, and then had a dip in the pool on our return. We ate out every night at either the shopping centre below the apartments, sometimes overlooking the beach at Puerto Rico, or at the shopping centre at the top of the hill, all meals were fantastic. This wasn't our first time in Gran Canaria, we call it our home from home because of all the nice friendly people we meet every time we come year in and year out, and they always recognise us and ask after other family members. You must take a trip on the ferry to the market at Mogan on a friday, its not to be missed its quite an experience, and Mogan is so beautiful. This was our second time this year to Gran Canaria we came out in January for my daughters birthday, and are back in October, yes to the CalaD'or, for my grandaughters second birthday, we managed to get a free child place.

We(myself and my partner and our 2 teenage children) have just returned from an 11 night stay at the Cala D'or apartments. We arrived august 29th and were allocated room 312 which was lovely and clean and overlooked the pool and had a great view of the sea and the shopping centre below which is where all the shops, bars and restaurants are. The whole complex was cleaned regularly. All the staff were friendly and helpful. The bar staff made us feel very welcome and obviously enjoyed their jobs! Poolside activities were good and night time entertainment included a reptile show which our 18 year old daughter will not forget as she was introduced to an albino python! There was plenty of restaurants and bars down at the shopping centre offering every kind of food imagineable. We liked the food at Las Brassas, the steak and lamb were fantastic. For 4 of us the meals, drinks and 2 desserts cost 76 euros. If you fancy a kebab, London Kebab house at the bottom of the steps was convenient and tasty. Theres also a Macdonalds and Subway. We used the local bus services to go to markets at Mogan and Arguineguin and other beaches. The sand dunes at Maspalomas are wonderful and Amodores beach is worth a visit, we walked there using the pathway along the sea front and the scenery was beautiful, it took us around 30 minutes steady walk-but it was very hot - well into the 30s most days. There was a welcome breeze the last few days of our stay.In general we visited the beach most days as it was so nice, we tended to go in the pool late afternoons when it was less busy. We didnt find touts a problem at all, we just said no and carried on walking. Hardly saw any to be honest. When you go into the shopping centre at night, you will be approached by restauranteurs and they will try and persuade you that their menu is the best! Its up to you where you spend your money - walk and talk is the best policy we found! Use the supermarkets in the centre for daily groceries as its a lot cheaper than the shop in the complex. The only negative of the holiday was one 'guest' out of a family of 9, who spent the whole day, everyday, drinking alcohol and then one day was even sick in the pool, he stumbled around the poolside bar knocking over glasses, and throwing plastic chairs around, which he found amusing. It came to a head one afternoon when comments were made about skin colour, which we took issue with and after I had a few strong words with him, he made no further nuisance of himself. Even though we travelled independently, we spoke to the Thompson rep about this and she was already aware of problems regarding this guest and was very helpful. For what we paid through Travel Republic this was a fantastic, value for money holiday and we would definitely return.
