“Cockroaches and poor service”
Reviewed November 19, 2013

We had cockroaches in the apartment, and could not stay there. The staff was neither friendly or helpful. Only day 2 did we get another apartment. It is a lot of narrow steps, and the pool area is not very attractive. We would not recommend this place to anybody.

We stayed at these apartments from the 18th sept till the 2nd of oct , it was booked as a last minute break as friends were also going but staying across the valley in much more expensive apartments .
we wanted to stay somewhere cheap (it only cost us 220 quid for the 2 weeks), yes we read the reviews and yes some of them were pretty bad but decided to give it a go .
reception was closed when we arrived but was soon met by someone who showed us our room which was right at the top number 48 yes there are a lot of steps but Puerto rico is built on a double sided valley so we knew there was going to be steps , but as pretty seasoned travellers it didn't put us off .
the room was cleaned at least every other day along with clean towels and bedding and to be honest the apartment was really clean and we could not fault it ALL the staff were very friendly and helpful at all times , again as has already been said 9 times out of 10 if you treat people with respect you always get it back .
the pool was clean and we used it most days even if only for an hour .

yes there are cats but didn't bother us at all as we left them to do there thing they were not a problem at all and actually very friendly .

yes we saw 1 or 2 cockroaches on the steps but were dead and never saw so much as anything in the room not one single insect .

if your in the centre of the resort or by the beach or harbour the cab ride back up the hill (missing all those steps) is only 2.15 euro and well worth it , walking down is not a problem only in our early 40's but the walk back up would be a nightmare !

all in all a very enjoyable stay at the Arimar apartments and we would definitely stay here again.
you get what you pay for you cant expect a palace for the sort of money you pay for this place .
it is cheap, but very cheerful .

I booked these apartments and then came on here and read the reports i was gutted after reading some of them, so was not looking forward to this, we arrived around 1am in the morning, reception was shut but there was a number for us to call ( if you hadn't got a phone you would be stuffed) we rang the number and the man came straight away, we got in our apartment and for the prize we paid it was worth it, there were cats as everyone stated but they didn't bother us. next morning we went to the reception all were friendly and we went on our way, we didn't need the reception after that and it wasn't open all day but the times were the same every day and they were there. the bar guy was a great guy very friendly the cleaner was friendly too, i always say treat people how you want to be treated. we had bedding changed twice and towels every other day, as for the steps to the town this is not the apartments fault if you read up about gran canaria it tells you it isn't for the less mobile, my husband and i had a great time in gran canaria and would also go back to these apartments, there were some building works going on so looks like they were up dating some of the rooms.

Room Tip: we stayed in room 6 these were on the front and only up 1 lot of steps, so 1 to 8 for less steps and...

I have just come back from a week at the Arimar with my boyfriend.

After giving some details to the receptionist we were told that our key was in our door (number 50) little did we know this was right at the top and had the drag our cases up 5 small flights of stairs. Luckily we only had one main case so I took the 2 hand luggage cases up. Our apartment was round the back and NOT like the ones at the front of the hotel. There were cats around which we did hear about before, if you don't pay them any attention they'll leave you alone. To greet us at outside our front door was 2 dead cockroaches, we struggled for about 5 minutes to open the stiff door. When we did get it open, part of the frame came with it. We had to leave our room like this all week as we didn't want to draw attention to it even though the maids came in and obviously saw it. -they still didn't fix it. One day we came back to the frame outside, passers by knew our door was broke! Wasn't happy about this. People had said that when they complained staff didn't like it. We just took valuables out and luckily didn't have our apartment ransacked!

Apart from the decor being a bit dated, the apartment seemed fairly clean. Although it didn't look like it had been swept as there were 2 dead spiders & dirt on the floor too.

I don't think our sheets were changed during our stay. Our room was cleaned every other day and they did an ok job.

The shower curtain in the bathroom stunk to high heaven. Didn't even want to touch it. The shower head was aimed at the back of the bath and you couldn't move it which meant the water was running along the back and down onto the floor.

Walking to the shops & restaurants was a real work out. Including the steps at our apartment there were over 200 more! Ok walking down but walking up was not much fun. Especially if you want to come back in the day about 2 when the sun is hitting 27 degrees!

Didn't go to the pool and definitely didn't eat from the bar thing.

I've had cheaper holidays in better accommodation, I suppose I'll just make sure I book with a travel agent next time. Most of the apartments in Puerto Rico seemed really run down so there are probably a few like this one. Not a total nightmare but wouldn't go back

Had no problems with these apartments. Yes they are dated but for 200 quid for a couple for 11 nights I cant complain. I found them clean and as for the previous reviewer complaining about cats . I take it the photograph involved the said cat receiving a titbit.of some kind (yes of course they will come into your apartment !). The cleaning staff were good although overworked ! You get what you pay for and as a fussy person I cant and wont slate this place.

We arrived at these apartments on the 18th of may at 9pm, the reception was closed, with us on arrival were 2 elderly ladies both in their 70s. There was a note attached to the reception door with both our names and door numbers on it. Both the elderly women were in a room about 6 flight of stairs up, so we carried their cases up for them, before coming back down for our own cases, then back up the stairs again to our own room. When we got in the room I checked around, as you do, in the cutlery drawer was a cockroach running around the knives and forks, the plaster was kept on the walls with what looked like a very rough paint job, orangey yellow and was peeling off all over. 2nd night there was 2 cockroaches running all over the living area, there where cats all over the place trying to get into the room every time the door was left open, all in all I would not stay here again if they paid me to, and give me my spending money as well. Be warned, STAY AWAY, this place is the lowest of the low.

Room Tip: Don't even bother booking this place

We were in apartments number 7 and 8 number eight was a disgrace. it was filthy (pictures to prove it) the shower was hanging off the wall, the bathroom door got jammed causing a panic attack. The front door itself was broke, there was no lock and could just be opened by anybody.

Number 7 apartment had €400 robbed from us. When we asked for the number for the police we were told everyone working there was family so they could not give us the number. The cleaner stormed in empting her pockets shouting "I didn't touch your money" which was strange as none of us accused her.

Also there were cats everywere and half of them looked sick and infected and the were in the apartments.

The staff became very unfriendly after this incident and we had to get our travle agent to move us as we received alot of hassle from the staff.

The pool was unuseable as it was filthy and the cats ate your food at the restaurant putting everyone off it.
