“Great BnB”
Reviewed July 8, 2012

Great BnB, good value, and very helpful owners. If you go, make sure you also ask for a trip to the Skellig Islands which can be booked through the BnB. Unmissable. Rooms are very clean, compact, with great views.

Portmagee Heights is a lovely modern build, family rum B&B. The rooms are pleasant, spacious with very comfortable bedding and good, modern bathrooms. The service is friendly and efficient with, on my visit, breakfast served by family members with a smile. TV in the bedroom was tiny, though, with very poor channel selection - not a big deal but not a selling point either.

My problem with this place was concerning the price - €60 for mid week single occupancy is just too much-and this was not a room with a view-it was a small ground floor room. I could stay in almost any hotel in the country for the same or less and avail of hotel facilities. I think these people need to rethink their pricing policy somewhat to get the most out of their fine establishment. Don't shoot the golden goose!!

Excellent modern B&B with interesting interior designed well furnished rooms (also wonderful beds). Great breakfast in the morning. I was sick of fry ups so I had the pancakes with a plate of fruit which was excellent. Friendly service tops it all off – definitely a cut above the rest.
Although, it would be nice to have a slightly better single supplement rate and the televisions could be slightly bigger.

We stayed with in this lovely cottage for two nights and loved it.
The self catering cottage is located just across the road from the B&B Portmagee Heights.
The price of 120 EUR per night is already cheaper than the B&B (35 p.p. night) from 4 persons. The house sleeps a maximum of 7 in three rooms: a double, a twin (two single beds), a triple (one double + one single bed).
Enjoy the quietness of a house for yourself - this is what we did.
The entrance hall and the sitting area are perfectly held, and diesigned in a "marine" style, recreating a sailing boat atmosphere (see pictures). Each of the rooms was exactly as cosy, freshly renovated, even if maybe a bit smallish. Staying there a bit longer would had caused a bit of logistical luggage problem, but dont forget that you have the full house for sourself and can store things all around.
The kittchen is well equipped, with all amenities. The table is perfect for four, but will be much too small for more people. But on other pictures, we saw that there is a big table on disply in the main hall. This might would then be perfect for bigger groups.
The main hall has a real fireplace and would be a perfect place for winter evenings, to play some of the BOARD GAMES provided.
IT is a pity that the view around the kitchen is so poor. You actually look onto an a little bit unnice looking antrance to the neighbouring farm, some concrete surfaces.
The same is for the view out of the sitting area. While the view is lovely towards the sea, dont look to this farm :)
The cottage is located alongside the main road. Cars pass by pretty fast. So, even I asked if cars are heard and was guaranteed that it would not be the case, I was a bit disappointed by this. But it might have been a misunderstanding and once I plugged in my ear waxes... all was OK :)
A little minus was the finish of the bathroom on the lower ground. While it had a lovely farm house character (I loved the stairs going up through a tiny door), and was well equipped with a big shower cabin and a good water pressure, the nice green tiles were covered with some splashes of white paint at some places. The corners of the cabin were a bit dirty, and the cabin door blocked each second time we closed or opened it. The bathroom cabin had no handle, so that you could push it open but not close it, what was particularly ennoying as moskitos came in...
The bathroom in the upper level is a little jewel. And once the JACCUZZI will be repaired, guests will enjoy a unique experience in a b&b. Never saw a jaccuzzi in one before. THis is part of the "exclusivity" concept of the owners; we did only visit the rooms of the main b&b house, and they would easily obtain 4 stars in a real hotel. HUGE beds, a modern and stylish design. Would stay there without hesitation a next time.
NEvertheless, had my father not noticed the leak, we would had had even more water coming from a defectuous pipe in the jaccuzzi. We spend about an hour to wipe the water in the main hall, and I was a bit disppapointed and fairly surprised when we were offered NO HELP TO FIX this when I mentionned the issue.
But all in all, a very enjoyable stay. We would come back without hesitation with small groups, for a bit longer, i.o. to enjoy the main hall...

The BREAKFAST is absolutely lovely. The pancakes have been mentionned already by other reviewers. The full Irish was really tasty.
The interiors of the main house are in a modern and classy style, what is unusual for Irish b&bs, but really enjoyable.

House and B&B of course, as mentionned by other reviewers, perfectly located, 5 min car or 10-15 min walk to the peers for the Skellig Michael ships, or to discover Kerry and its Ring.

Myself and three of my friends stayed here recently and we only have good things to say about it. The house is fantastic, bedrooms are big and comfortable, and the breakfast was delicious. The lady who owned the house was so helpful to us, giving us info about the local area and, when we were unable to get a taxi to town (its very close to town but it was raining) she dropped up down (free of charge). really lovely and warm woman. really recommend this place, and its very reasonably priced.

Our trip to Ireland was cold and rainy. Basically, we were just cold through and through. When we arrived at Monica's, she took care to make sure that the heat in our room was on (Hooray!) and, as we sat luxuriating in our beautiful room, we realized that the floors were heated as well! We were able to walk barefooted around the room and on the bathroom's tile floor. Incredible!

Or...maybe it was just Monica's warm and friendly personality that warmed us up. It was so fun to visit with her and her children, to sit in our room and look out at the sheep in the pasture behind us, and to be warmed, once again, by her excellent breakfast the next day. Thanks, Monica!
