Review of Afroessa Hotel
5.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed Jul 24, 2017via mobile
They really take hospitality to new heights here. When I read about the ancient greek custom of 'theoxenia' I guess this is what they meant. These folks will go out of their way and do whatever it takes to make sure you feel at home and that you have the best time possible in Thira. And the caldera view from my suite was something I'll never forget. Also keep in mind that the sunset is better in Imerovigli than in Oia. You also avoid the tourist hordes and don't have to worry about having a perfect view.

My boyfriend and I loved our stay at Afroessa, we spent 3 nights here and everything from the word go was fantastic. Joanna and Mary were both so helpful when we were booking our stay and this continued once we arrived in Santorini, they were both very warm and welcoming and helped us to book ferry tickets, ATV and taxi hire, they even upgraded our room!

The hotel itself is very picturesque, built into the cliff side with views along the coast to Oia and out across the sea and Caldera which took our breaths away. Sunset from our terrace was simply out of this world! The rooms were well maintained and spacious and with there only being a total of 12 rooms in the hotel the pool area was never overcrowded.

I would definitely recommend a stay at Afroessa to anyone visiting Sanrotini and hope to come back here in the future!

As noted by everybody else, the staff is amazing. You get the impression that they are taking personal responsibility for the quality of your overall stay on the island--not just that Afroessa itself is to your liking. Some things to point out.

They are very responsive beforehand via email if and as you try to figure out which room to book. As with other neighboring properties, Afroessa is not a standalone building but rather a collection of rooms built across varying stories along the caldera (cliff). Some have more privacy, others less. Some have more flights of steps to get to, others less. Etc. etc. They will help you decide (based on availability, of course).

While there, they welcome you as family and that's not just applicable to the owner. Eddie is "the man" -- he has gotten shout-outs here before but he really is always there to help with any request and the guy is a beast in terms of helping with luggage. Any tips you need or help booking reservations, the staff has got you covered.

As others have noted, the property is amazing. Fantastic air conditioning and very comfortable shower. We didn't have dinner there, but the lunch (same menu, I think) was excellent if you're looking to stay in. The pool gets fantastic late-afternoon sunlight.

The location is good for those willing to get some exercise while walking to and from Fira. The location of the hotel (Imerovigli) is ~1.5 miles from Fira but that is no ordinary 1.5 miles. It takes about 40 mins and especially on the return (since it is more uphill -- Imerovigli higher up than the other neighboring towns) is quite the work-out. We loved it bc before/after dinner + drinks in Fira, we were forced to take a nice long walk along the caldera path and you get to see all of the different hotels/restos/shops along the caldera. Parking is a <5 minute walk from the hotel (you make your own spot where feasible in one of the little alleyways or squares).

On the rooms: Rooms count up from the top down (room 1 is the highest up at road level). Rooms 11/12 are the furthest down the cliff (about 5 or 6 stories). The path along the caldera is about 2 stories down from road level. The further down, the less traffic you have passing by since there are fewer rooms to get to. As a result, they have the most privacy.

Cannot recommend this place enough -- awesome!

Room tip: Room 11 was very spacious and private. It is one floor below the pool, but furthest from the path to the road.

This hotel is located along the cliff with a breathtaking view of the Caldera. We arrived at the airport at 6am and arranged shared transfer via Hoppa website. We were the only ones in the van so it was actually a private transfer which was a 15 minute journey. The van stopped in the car park and the hotel is a 1 minute walk along the pedestrian pathway.
The hotel entrance is on the left side and the stairs will lead you down to the reception and restaurant, another set of stairs will take you down to the hotel rooms and then the swimming pool. Eddie was helpful with our luggages.
Beware of early arrivals, may have to wait a little. We were given intructions to call the hotel staff on arrival. I called several times with no answer. We didn't mind waiting at the terrace though because the view was just magical. Eddie appeared some time later helping other guests with their suitcases. He offered us to chill by the pool in a shaded area with lounge beds until the room was available.
The room was cosy and romantic with a kitchenette. There was small balcony overlooking the Caldera.
Location: It is between Fira and Oia which made it a good base to explore the Island. I find Oia far too crowded especially near sunset time. The hotel is a 2 minutes from a small shop for snacks and drinks, and 2-5 minutes away from a few restaurants. They helped us with the restaurant reservation and we dined at Avocado which was very good.
Transport: it was a scenic walk towards Fira, lots of photo opportunites. It was 36 degrees when we were there, and even 930am felt really hot, so make sure you bring a hat and sunscreen. The hotel helped us arrange a 35 euro Quad bike for 24 hours which I highly recommend. We were told 5Litres of petrol would be enough and for us I think we only use half of that. Need to be careful of the hilly roads but it was a very good way to explore the Island. Can go from North to South within 1.5 hours. I see lots of people driving small cars too, which may be a safer option and less risk of sunburn.

Overall I would recommend Afroessa.

Our stay at Afroessa couldn't have been better. The location, the hotel, the room, the host, the staff and the view were all perfect. Our hosts Maria and Joanna were absolutely incredible. Not only did they take care of everything for us, but they told us what to do and where to go to get the best out of our trip. Our room opened right up to the the picture perfect view of Santorini. We explored the entire island and Afroessa has by far the best view of the entire island. It's in a quiet location so you don't get all of the touristy stuff but close enough that you can walk along the boardwalk of Santorini into town. We would recommend this place to anyone - Sara and Leon

Room tip: all of the rooms are great.

Afroessa should not be missed. Everything is done with care and attention. The wonderful breakfasts perched high up on the caldera rim. The quality of the rooms - all very comfortable and with great amenities. A personal balcony ensuring a no hassle view of the stunning sunsets. Best of all Joanna and her entire staff are a delight and simply could not do enough for us

Room tip: Choose one not overlooking the busy footpath
