We spent 10 nights here recently after getting a pretty good deal, and had, overall, a reasonable experience. On the plus side, the breakfast was magnificent and the staff were very pleasant. The packaged massage was excellent.

On the slightly disappointing side, the superior Caldera view room was actually a room with a Caldera view patio, not quite the same. We had one night where the heavens opened and we had masses of thunder and lighting, I'm sure it would have make a great spectacle looking out over the caldera, unfortunately from our room window all we could see was the laundry room. (Regards the weather - it was October and on the whole, much nicer than we'd expected despite the one horrendous night).

The laundry room was rather noisy, not a problem for me with the constant whirring and beeping of machines, but the better half is a light sleeper and did struggle a little with the noises.

Another strange thing - to us at least - was the room had a large area set aside for a whirlpool bath - but the shower was -, let's say' highly compact'. I'd be surprised if we're unusual in showering frequently, and bathing rarely when holidaying. As such it seemed a strange configuration,

On the very poor side, we found we had no water one day - we couldn't get any information on when it was likely to be fixed, so headed off out for a few hours, intending (hoping) to get a shower when we got back before heading back out for the evening. On our return the room was like a bomb site with four workmen in there - it seemed the main pump for water in to the hotel had failed and was situated in a cupboard in our room. Although the lads were virtually finished at that point and only needed another half hour or so to finish up, I did mean our bathroom had been unusable for the best part of the day, and if we'd been around in fact the whole room for several hours, a there was a distinct lack of information forthcoming regards the situation, which was disappointing. (A complimentary coffee and some bottled water for washing would have been welcome as well).

All in all, I'd risk staying here again, but only at the same good deal and if I could definitely avoid room 19, (plus water pump, adjacent laundry room and lack of a caldera facing window) and would request room 20 or 21.

Room Tip: Room 19 - avoid at all costs - see above

We stayed for 2 nights during our recent visit to Santorini. The hotel is pretty easy to find with well marked signs once you get off at the main square in Imerovigli. It takes about 25 minutes by taxi from the ferry port. The front desk staff was very welcoming and the check in/check out process was a breeze. Our room was like a cavehouse with the bed perched up high on a platform and the view of the caldera from the balcony was to die for, I could just sit there for hours and admire. You can pick your breakfast menu and they serve you at your requested time at the balcony which was great. The wifi was a bit spotty from time to time and the bathroom was a bit damp due to lack of proper ventilation. The water pressure in the shower can vary but I was informed that this is an expected problem due to the location of the property. The only con is the # of steps you have to climb back and forth depending upon where you room is located. The front desk staff can make recommendations on possible package tours but don't take their word all the time since they only have limited partners they work with. We were told that the only way to see the volcano was to do the combined package with the hot springs but we ventured out on our own and found a volcano only tour in fira that worked for our schedule. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed the unique island of Santorini and the services that this property provides. I am not surprised that it is part of the SLH chain of hotels.

Me and my family have stayed 5-6 days this August including the 15th and in those days the power was off for the trouble at the central that lasted several days. In whatever other place this could have been a really disaster holiday but at On The Rocks thanks to the staff who have been really exceptional we manage and enjoy.
We have to say first that the location at Imerovigli or Oia is unique and only the sight you are enjoying is paying and giving a sense a satisfaction and peace.
All hotel are in terrace shape and we have to climb up and down the stairs and the little road to go to reception , bar , restaurant and so on.
Room are not so big in some cases as digged and carved in the rocks and also bathroom quite small.
Only with this structural concept many rooms can enjoy the view on Caldera that is really fantastic.
Having said and having clear the above when booking we should pay attention and ask the distance from the main road , how big is the rooms and select when possible rooms bigger , with pool and strategic position.
In our case we were 5 , me and my wife had a quite small room but very close and easy , our 3 sons had a fantastic suite , very big with a bis bathroom and also in strategic position.
The quality of food is very nice , the health club very small but cozy but what have really impressed me is the kindness and constant availability of the personnel that made the difference.

Like many hotels in Santorini this hotel is overrated like the island itself. All hotels have very good photographers, showing the hotels and rooms at their best angles with their tricks, so its almost impossible to find a room that matches the pictures. Also has to questioned how they manage to become a SLH chain hotel.
We booked a caldera suite for two nights at the hotel website.when we arrived we ended up in a room totally different than the pictures, basically a standard room next to the reception, without even enough room to place and open your luggage. Spoke to the hotel manager and complained, got the answer that this is the suite.they were probably overbooked.
Next day we were "upgraded" to the actual room we booked which at least looked similar to the description at their website, large sitting area etc.
Not going to complain about the steps, small pool, lousy breakfast since this is Santorini standards except only a few hotels like Grace etc.

We stayed at On The Rocks for the last two weeks of July to celebrate our 40th anniversary this year. We booked through Thomson and having read some of the recent reviews, were a little concerned about what we would find!
We needn't have worried. Yes, we have stayed in bigger, classier rooms. Yes there were lots of steps. BUT these are traditional, cave style rooms built into the side of the caldera. ( I can't believe that someone imagined there might be elevators!! ). It just added to the charm of the place .AND we have never had such an amazing view from our balcony just outside our room!
Breakfast is brought to your balcony at a selected time. The menu changed during our stay and there was ample choice. Delicious yoghurt with various fruit toppings, cereals, bread, croissants ,
ham, cheese, toasted sandwiches, spinach and cheese pies, eggs cooked in various ways (delicious omelettes), fresh orange juice, tea ,coffee, cappuccino, frappe etc. All enjoyed looking at the fantastic view of the volcano and watching the activity on the cruise ships etc.
The pool, although not large. was perfect for cooling down and the double sunbeds were great. Some people have commented that there are not many beds, but we never had a problem finding a free one during our fortnight. Salads, snacks and drinks are available from the Pool Bar and were fine.
The hotels biggest asset, though, are its staff. Everyone was so friendly and helpful.
Antonia and Sophia at Reception were lovely and nothing was too much trouble. Making suggestions for places to visit, recommending and booking restaurants, taxis etc. Thank you !!
Dimitris, Diego and Albert were great serving drinks and breakfast and carrying heavy cases up and down all those steps, always with a smile. Thank you !!
Linda, our cleaner, was sweet. Even with her limited English and our non existent Albanian we always enjoyed chatting to her and our room was kept perfectly clean and comfortable with fresh linen every day. Thank you!!
We had fantastic, complimentary massages from Jemma ( hope the name is correct) in the spa. So relaxing Thank you!!
If you go expecting the Savoy, then you will be disappointed, but go with an open mind and an open heart and you will have a great time. We understand that further renovations are taking place over the Winter , so maybe this will address some of the problems that some people say they have experienced. However we would happily return, especially to see the members of staff who we now think of as friends!! And that view , of course!!
Imerovigli is a nice quiet village with a few shops and some very good Tavernas. It is within easy reach of Fira and Oia etc. We hired a car for a week and saw most of the island and it's attractions. The bus service is very good too.
A fantastic holiday... thank you On The Rocks... We miss you !!
