Owner description: Skaros was considered the most important of Santorini's five castle fortresses. The rock was inhabited in medieval times, because the fortress constructed there offered protection from pirates.

“A bit scary but an amazing sense of achievement”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013 via mobile

I was determined to complete the walk to skaros rock and find the church tucked around the back that can be seen from the caldera. We took the footpath down to the left of the rock. It was well worn but very steep in places. This led us all the way to the church. The views from here are incredible.

On the way back we climbed the steps to take us back the other way, if you do this please be careful the footpath is dangerous and overgrown with weeds and loose stones. At one stage I didnt think I could go any further.

wear sensible shoes and take water with you.

“A good walk”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 10, 2013

Climbed down and then up the Skaros Rock. The steps going down are ok but not in prime shape. Also parts of the trip are definitely a bit difficult so wear very good shoes. Appropriate only for kids older than about 10. Also not good for people who are not very fit.
I climbed to the very top which is a bit risky. While climbing down I felt it was quite dangerous and needed help of another person. Don't attempt the climb to the top alone.

A gorgeous walk. Go early before its hot and walk right to the church on the end. Wear a hat, good footwear and sunscreen, take water.

A lovely way to view Santorini.

“Superb”

An amazing walk on this piece of history...the little church on the rock is very pretty, not being much of a hiker I was proud of my achievement especially when I viewed Skaros from Oia and could see where I'd walked!
