“Fabulous Views!”
Reviewed July 14, 2008

We stayed at the Astra in early June, 2008 and loved it. The two bedroom apartment was ideal for us, we especially enjoyed the patio. Can't say enough about the views, you have to see it to believe it. Big thanks to the staff for all their help.

Stayed here for 3 nights on our honeymoon end of June/beginning of July 08.

Pros: Absolutely stunning views. Beautiful and well-kept pool area. Bottle of welcome wine was wonderful - we bought a bottle in town to bring home we liked it so much. Cute cat that lived at the hotel (it's a pro if you're a cat person like me!). Good restaurant was in walking distance (can't remember the name but if you walk up the steps to the main road and go left, past the basketball court it's right there) but it was reasonably priced and cute outdoor atmosphere. The hotel was great location to watch the sunsets - we went to Oia and the sunset was hidden behind the buildings from where we ate and couldnt see it at all.

Cons: Bed was really hard and uncomfortable ...husband has back problems so it was not a good bed for him at all. Another couple we met at the hotel also expressed the same annoyance with their bed and they were in a much bigger room than us too, so I was glad we hadnt paid extra! Room location didnt allow for much privacy on our balcony. The hotel accepts cash only, they dont accept credit cards. Location of hotel was not ideal for us since Fira was a 25 min or so walk, and in the heat, that wasn't fun. We ended up cabbing it almost everywhere but cabs were expensive and the bus schedule is erratic and just not convenient. The village (Imerovigli) didnt have much but if you want quiet or would mostly stay at the hotel it would be ideal. You really had to go to Fira or Oia to do anything fun, besides that one restaurant we went to.

Tip: Sailing tour that you can arrange through hotel is great! Bring proper walking shoes for the volcano hike - and be careful of the swim to the hot springs, the swim is quite longer than it appears to be from the boat, if you're not a super strong swimmer not the best idea.

Serene, beautiful and simply the best

We have stayed in Astra in 1995, 2005 and April 2008. The place is absolutely wonderful. Simplicity and elegance come together to create a very attractive ambience.

We stayed in different rooms every time and loved them all. The apartments are decorated differently with carefully selected furnishings. The rooms are immersed in diffused light reflected from the white painted walls, a special characteristic of the Island, while at night the lighting sconces and table lamps create a relaxing cozy mood. All the apartments have direct spectacular and mesmerizing views of the impressive Skaros and Caldera and the unforgettable sunsets. We have watched sunsets in many places in the world and Santorini is up there with the best of them. Get a glass of wine, watch the sunset from your balcony and then go to dinner; perfect routine.

In the morning the plentiful breakfast was served in the room or patio; there are so many choices (fresh fruits, yogurt, croissants and cookies baked on premises and of course coffee, tea, jam etc.). I liked the idea of leaving your breakfast order with the receptionist the night before so you don’t have to think about it in the morning.

The amenities are just right. The beds, with crispy white cotton sheets are so comfortable. The bath towels are large and soft. Outside there are plenty of comfortable cushioned chairs and recliners. The rooms have access to the Internet just in case you missed the real world. Some apartments have their own private pool or Jacuzzi.

Our last trip coincided with Greek Easter. On Easter Sunday George (the general manager) invited all the guest to a feast with a lot of food and wine, including the traditional lamb on the spit, which he personally prepared over open fire. The celebration ended with Greek dances. Unforgettable.

This is the place where stress disappears and you enter a world of peace and serenity. All these great feelings one gets here is of course not only coming from the location of the hotel and the view, but especially from the staff, who go out of their way to make you feel special. They are kind, polite and always address you with a smile. And then there is George who oversees everything. He epitomizes Greek hospitality. The trip to Santorini and our stay at Astra was so special and memorable. Until the next time….

Isadoraflights review perplexes me? Although we did not stay in the smaller studio apartment room, we stayed 4 nights at the Astra in May and our experience was wonderful..it's location and views along with the quiet village of Imerovigli can not be matched any where on the Island...because Santorini is a noisy crowded Island, so the quiet side where Astra is located is wonderful. The walk from Astra into Fira was enchanting. We walked it everyday. The views and cliffside dwellings, apartments, houses, churches, restaurants, cafes, tavernas, swimming pools, wild flowers and never-ending ocean views kept us wrapped up in a whimsical world each time we walked. Yes, Astra property's rooms stair step down the cliffs of Santorini and are close together but comparably to Oia's many property choices, Astra is much more comfortable...basically all Santorini properties are very close together with little privacy because of the lay of the island. We had fresh breakfast delivered-to our room every morning served with fresh squeezed OJ, our rooms were very clean and designed in a way that gave the illusion you are sleeping in the clouds--well designed for the entire theme and setting of Astra. The bed had a pillow top-very comfortable and the furniture was very modern that complimented the design and feel Astra is trying to achieve. The infinite pool and bar were magical with large reclining beach beds to relax on or Adorondack chairs. Comparable, most pool bars are expensive... have you ever been to Hawaii or Las Vegas--wow the pool bars are expensive there also!!!--but Astra serves the freshest fruit drinks on the quiet and beautiful pool patio, right along with a very sincere bar staff and provides the private quiet atmosphere for an amazing get away--try the kiwi Mojito. Astra is not a budget property! It is modern, sophisticated, uniquely designed, private, serene and enchanting beyond words. Yes Astra is expensive, but delivers the service, comfort and enchanting quiet beauty and privacy that we desiredin the little village of Imerovigli.. We took time to look at other properties and compare as we explored the other areas of the Island, We had a hot tub-patio room--on the cooler evenings in May we soaked in the tub, drank chilled Santorini wine and watched the Ships, fishing boats, and sail boats quietly pass through the Agean. A little tip each day for the maids allows you the Island gratitute of fresh flowers, more candles, flower peddles and little extras that add to the luxury of Astra.

There is no question that the views here are amazing, but this is an unfortunate example of greedy, unprofessional hoteliers jumping on the "luxury boutique" bandwagon and doing it on the cheap. They seem to think that by by adding the L & B words, chucking in some funky upholstery and an overpriced bar, they can ramp up the prices of what are, essentially, rather cramped and very basic apartments. We were promised a "spacious" apartment with a private balcony, so were shocked to find a tiny bedsit with a mezzanine bedroom you could barely stand up in. The balcony consisted of a table and chairs outside, cheek-by-jowl with the next door neighbour's equally un-private outdoor furniture. Inside, the supposedly arty and quirky decor mentioned on the website and in some reviews was non-existent. Instead there was generic, Ikea-like white furniture, bare walls, low-thread-count bedding and a mouldy bathroom more suited to a travelodge. The shower was so minuscule even I (5ft3 and just over 7st) struggled to turn around in it.
The staff did offer us a suite for an extra 250 euros (the cheek!) but this was just as basic, only larger, with an extra bedroom we didn't need and a terrace overlooked by a building site.
The only highlights were the Korres toiletries and the free bottle of Santorini wine, which we enjoyed while watching the sunset and hatching our escape plans.
Breakfast was a non-event of stale pastries (no croissants because they had "run out") and yoghurt that was clearly off. The staff did the sorry Faulty Towers thing of arguing back about this, instead of offering a replacement.
If you are unfussed about decor, space and comforts, and just want a plain functional room, Astra may be ok for you. Then again, if you are this sort of traveller you're unlikely to want to spend over 300 euros a night. In any case, for just under that price we moved swiftly the next morning into the truly luxurious Sun Rocks further along the coast, where we were fabulously pampered and recovered from the trauma.

  • Liked — Free bottle of wine, stunning views, and leaving as soon as possible!
  • Disliked — Horrible cramped little room, utterly depressing. Bolshy staff.

AstraSuites, General Manager at Astra Suites, responded to this review, June 30, 2008
This client booked 3 nights by phone guaranteeing the reservation with her credit card. When she arrived, disregarding our clearly stated cancellation policy, she informed us suddenly she would stay only ONE night, not three, leaving us to absorb the 2 remaining nights lost revenue with absolutely no compensation. We discovered later she had no intentions of staying 3 nights, she only booked us as a back-up as she had the following nights waitlisted at another hotel which came through and so she went there. She refused to honor her reservation with us and threatened immediately before she even checked in to write a bad review on the internet if we didn't release her from her reservation without penalty. She also claimed to be a member of the exclusive travel club “Mr&Mrs Smith,” and demanded the requisite free welcome gift of champagne even though she had no membership ID and was never able to provide any proof of membership. When she saw the least expensive apartment category she had booked for herself, she immediately demanded a FREE upgrade to a deluxe suite at three times the rate of the apartment she had chosen, refusing to pay the difference and refusing to stay in the category she had booked. In good faith, we offered her a discounted rate on the suite but she still refused to pay any additional rate and again threatened us with a bad review. She stayed less than 12 hours and left, acting very pleased that we had kindly obliged to release her from her legal obligations without penalty and said nothing of the various other issues brought up in this review.
Needless to say, we cannot run our business properly under unfair and threatening conditions, and while we applaud the power and influence of the internet in the travel industry today, we don't feel this review is worthy of consideration as it was borne of blackmail-like tactics.
As anyone can see, we have several other less than perfect reviews on this site which we feel are legitimate and we have addressed them promptly and thoroughly and in fact made improvements as a result, as we have no issue with CONSTRUCTIVE criticism, in fact we welcome all feedback as it only helps us to improve! But we feel this particular review is neither legitimate, constructive, or consistent with our other reviews, and we welcome all readers to make their own judgment as to the legitimacy of this review.
In closing, may we add that the same yogurt from the same container was served to over 50 other guests that morning without another complaint, and how the reviewer fails to mention that her yogurt was promptly replaced with homemade rice pudding which she declared “delicious.” And, according to the official ratings of the textile commission, our 360 thread count sheets are rated as “excellent” which is the highest quality category available in the industry.
And lastly, we think the reviewer’s description of our staff as “bolshy” says it all, as this British term generally means “tenacious and unwilling to yield,” we don’t think giving in to blackmailing tactics is in any way a FAIR way to do business.

We thank you for your time.

Just returned to the USA after spending four days and nights at the Astra Apartments in Imerovigi, Santorini.

Words cannot adequately describe the beautful accomodations and service provided by the management/staff at this hotel.

They have a beautiful pool, excellent poolside bar service, very good breakfasts brought to your room, unbelievable views and a staff that goes out of their way to insure that all your requests and needs are met.

There are newer, more famous and luxurious hotels in Oia, but none that can surpass the overall package that this hotel provides. We would stay here again without hesitation, even if the prices were the same at the high end hotels in Oia.

The only negative is that the hotel requires all hotel charges to be paid in cash, travelers checks or personal checks. No credit cards accepted. This policy presumably holds down their expenses so that they do not have to be passed on to the people staying here.

We stayed at Astra for 3 nights in May. We couldn't have picked a more perfect place. The hotel is situated in THE best spot on the island, overlooking the caldera. Oia has beautiful views of the sunset, but this spot in Imerovigli gives you a complete view of the entire caldera and the two volcanic islands in the center and you can get excellent sunset views here as well. The hotel is situated right on the side of the cliff in traditional Greek island bright white buildings with blue accents. My husband and I stayed in a standard apartment on the same level as the reception area. The fantastic thing about each room is that each has it's own balcony or terrace overlooking the caldera. The inside is very cute and resembles the shape of a cave with a curved ceiling. Our room had a loft for our bedroom.

Every morning we were served an excellent and plentiful breakfast which we could either have delivered and set up on a table on our balcony or inside if we wished. Breakfast is included in your rate and you can choose what time you want it delivered.

Each room has a TV and is internet ready, but you must bring your own cable. We didn't bring one, so the reception kindly let us borrow one during our stay. The staff is very friendly and accomodating.

There is a small mountain with a land bridge nearby (called Skaros) and it is a visible and beautiful part of the view. You can take some paths to get there. If you follow the dirt path around the mountain you will come upon a beautiful white and blue domed chapel on the other side facing the water.

It is very easy to get to Fira from the hotel. It is a very beautiful and scenic path of twisting curves and steps going up and down through the white cliffside buildings. Along the way you can easily stop at a nice taverna for a meal or snack. Fira is a great place to go shopping and has plenty of restaurants. The main bus station is also there and will take you to several spots all around the island.

Astra has a gorgeous pool facing the caldera. Unfortunately, we did not get to use it as we were busy sightseeing. My one regret is that we did not stay longer at Astra, but we will definitely go back! This is THE place to stay in Santorini and Santorini is THE place to go in Greece. It was by far my favorite place in Greece.
