“Ouranos / Uranos Traditional Houses - just PERfect !”
Reviewed July 22, 2010

My wife and I stayed here just last week (July 2010). The first thing that hits you when you get off the private bus and are met by the enthusiastic bell boys is the heat. A minute later you are consumed by the most AMAZING view. This hotel is built into the wall of what is, essentially, the crater of a volcano with the most amazing view perched high over the sea (see photo)

I had been to Greece only once before, some 30 years ago, when it was all a bit "manyana" - laid back to say the least. Now, the Eastern Europeans are looking after things, you can expect your room and its immediate surroundings to be spotless and the staff incredibly friendly.....nothing was too much.

As we expected, our room was not "five star" but it was perfect for us.....cool made even cooler with the efficient and quiet air-conditioning system. All facilities including a safe, a cold cold fridge, a small stove if we wanted to cook and a coffee machine. It was very comfortable. Outside we had a fantastic little terrace with a most wonderful view.

Breakfast was provided on a little terrace just above our room catering for the traditional breakfast tastes of more or less any country you can imagine on a buffet basis and available from 8:00am to a very civilised 11:00am!

I thoroughly recommend the Uranos Traditional Houses Hotel (sometimes known as the Ouranos Traditional Houses Hotel) if you are looking for a relaxing holiday with THE most spectacular views.

We had a fabulous stay at Uranos during our trip to Santorini in Sept. 2008. However, it should be noted that not all rooms have a view comparable to much of what you see on their website. The initial room we received was above away from the main complex, quite a bit of a walk actually. It seemed more akin to a separate flat, rather than part of the Uranos complex. It did not have a direct view of the caldera either. After staying the first night here, we asked to see what else was available. We upgraded to one of the suites in the main complex with a private balcony and jacuzzi for about 100 Euros per night extra. Once we did this, we were thoroughly satisfied with our accommodation. The views were excellent, the rooms clean, and the breakfast was wonderful. The service at reception was quite good as well. I really liked staying in Imerovigli - it made for a nice base to see the rest of the island from, and was beautiful and away from the noise of Fira town. We rented a scooter and were able to see everything on Santorini using it. We had a wonderful time. I would rate this place 5 starts, but the initial room given to us was not what we expected or what was advertised, so I brought the rating down a point.

We booked this hotel through ThomasCook. We stayed in an one-bed room with private balcony. The balcony overlooked the volcano and gave us peace and breath-taking view. The included breakfast was excellent - different cakes everyday! The town was only 20 minute nice walk away from Fira. Absolutely fantastic!

My boyfriend and I stayed at Uranos Houses for two nights in late May. We had booked a one bedroom unit but were upgraded to a suite because that's all they had left - we didn't complain! The suite was huge and way more space than we needed... it probably could have slept 5. It was pretty cool sleeping in a suite built inside a cave, and everything was very neat and cozy. Anastasia, our hostess, was really nice and gave us some good restaurant tips (Ouzeri in Fira for authentic Greek food!).

The private balcony was by far the best feature - the view of the caldera from Uranos Houses is breathtaking. The breakfast buffet in the morning was very impressive too - there was a huge variety of hot and cold foods with Greek specialties mixed in too. We loved being able to take our breakfast up to enjoy on our private balcony.

I've been making "video reviews" during my travels, and I think the one I made of Uranos Houses came out well and gets across what the view and rooms (or at least, suites) are like. I think it's easier to show you the hotel in a video rather than talk about it!

My video on Tripfilms: http://www.tripfilms.com/watch.do?videoID=64744

Hope the video helps. I highly recommend Uranos Houses!

NO one has a better caldera view than the Uranos ‘Traditional Houses’. The staff (though small in number) is friendly, knowledgeable, and shares their knowledge with helpful advice. Every room has a private balcony or terrace, some have both. The breakfast is excellent, and they’ll serve it in your room or on your terrace. In addition, although not having a restaurant, Anastasia (your staff) gladly cooks meals on call, if for some reason you do not feel like taking the short stroll to the nearest taverna. If you have trouble with stairs, then nowhere on the cliff is suitable for you, but the staff will carry your bags in and out (with a smile), so you do not have to carry a load. Another advantage, is that since the Uranos does not sell or serve drinks, you do not have to pay caldera-view prices for having a drink while admiring the stunning view from your terrace. The urnaos has no pool, but it does have 2 (unheated) jacuzzis. But note that we saw hotel ‘pools’ that were smaller than either of the Uranos Jacuzzis. What few ‘pools’ there are on the cliff face are all small. All in all, although no inexpensive (nothing on the cliff is), the Uranos is an excellent choice, especially if you’re interested in kicking back and enjoying the view.

We stayed for two weeks for our Honeymoon - soon after arriving Dora came to say hello with cold orange juice and a slice of banana cake (very welcome I can tell you!) our bags were taken to our room by the really helpful staff and we were then taken personally by Dora to our new upgraded room as it was our Honeymoon which was so lovely, we didn't expect any kind of special treatment at all.

The rooms are basic but very cool and the kitchen is perfect for those evenings spent cooking at home the fridges are big and our bathroom was lovely, clean towels every day and very clean floors etc.

Santorini itself is amazing we had the most lovely time and we were both more than happy with Imerovigli it's by far the prettiest part of the Island - we trooped with all the other tourists off to Ia (Oia) one evening to watch the sunset - but were glad to reurn to the tranquillity of Imerovigli

Would really rate Uranos and would go again, Dora and her team were all wonderful and really helpful and we had the Honeymoon we were after 100%

On arrival in Immerovigli ( a mere 15 mins transfer from the airport) we were met and greeted by Chris who carried our cases to the houses for us (here is a clue, the name is "Ouranos Traditional Houses" ie they are built into the side of the Caldera). We were warmly greeted by the manager Dora and told everything we needed to know about the facilities and so on.
We had a small private balcony with a table and chairs where we could sit out and eat lunch / have a glass of wine and this had a spectacular view. There was also a sunning area adjacent to the covered jacuzzi with mats provided or a large terrace for all the guests to enjoy just one level down, this had sun loungers and tables and chairs.
On the first day our toilet sprung a leak and it was fixed with minimum hassle, a simple phonecall to reception had Chris at our door to fix it immediately.
Breakfasts were served from the main coffee area although you could have them on your balcony and we were surprised to find that the majority of pastrys and cakes were made by Dora!
The rooms are cave like - this was the attraction for us - although we had plenty of space, there was a slightly damp smell to the room but being on the side of a cliff in a very humid environment we accepted it as one of those things - you cant have everything! We did mention this to Dora and she arranged for our sheets etc to be changed more often to try and limit this.
Our room was cleaned to perfection every day and all of the staff were friendly and helpful.
In my opinion this area is the best to stay in Santorini, you are in close proximity to most things and Fira is a 20 min walk away on a picturesque walk.
If you are after a beach holiday go to Kamari or Perissa (we did day trips to both on the bus for 1.10 euros) but if you want a picturesque postcard holiday go to the Caldera.
Likewise if you are after a hotel in the traditional sense, dont book traditional houses!
We wanted a quiet romantic holiday away from the touristy bustle and tourist traps, we got a it in bundles and with a fantastic view!
