“Great food, service, clean and lovely staff”
Reviewed September 25, 2009

We have just come back from the Blue Bay resort hotel Agia Pelegia near Heraklion.
The hotel stands on a hill above a local beach 250metres(steep climb) with beautiful views. The hotel itself is great, clean, modern with excellent rooms. We stayed in the main block, and we did see some of the other annexe rooms. The staff are so friendly and helpful and nothing is too much trouble. The restaurant again is spotless and the food quality choice is excellent, different themed nights buffet. All inclusive is good but limited to beers, wine, ouzzo, local brandy(No local spirits like gin, rum), but if you buy local spirits you are NOT ripped off. We stayed in a 5star in August (Panorama - Chania) so in comparison the Blue Bay is far better(and cheaper) because the staff are more helpful friendly, food is better, location is much better and the drinks you buy are cheaper and more generous. Great staff at the Blue Bay and the entertainment team Sam/Metro/lisa were brilliant and they make your holiday one to remember.
We would NOT go back to the Panorama in Chania but the Blue Bay we would

I recently came back from a 10 day stay, and I must say that I was utterly disappointed and let down with what should have been a great stay at very nice looking hotel.

I would also say that if you're not a fan of walking, do not even consider this hotel. Personally, I enjoyed taking the opportunity to walk 15 minutes to Agia Pelagia, as you get a great chance to look at the wonderful landscape and beautiful bay.

But back to the hotel -

In my opinion, the plus sides.
1 - Fantastic looking hotel, generally very clean in the atrium.
2 - Nice pool with ample availability of sun loungers.
3 - Plenty of activities laid on by the animation team, definitely get to know Metro! If not for the animation team, I would have given this hotel a terrible rating. They were very keen to get people of all ages involved in the activities, which included Water Polo, Football, and random silly games.
4 - Generally friendly staff, but they are very overworked, which I will get to later.
5 - Some very nice looking bars, especially the one in the building overlooking the road.
6 - Live sports were sometimes on in the main bar ( I consider this a good point anyway, lol)

The bad points (there's a lot)
1 - I had to report an ant infestation in my room, not once but twice. They didn't even consider moving us.
2 - Not enough staff. We were informed by one of the staff members that 20 of a team of 30 staff had left and would not return. I am unsure why this was the case. This led to a shocking level of service. Often my room would not be cleaned, bedding left for days, and towels would not be removed nor new ones provided. Between 1900 and 2200 it often took 10-15 minutes to get a drink as it was so busy, and only one member of staff was on at any one bar.
3 - The food. Absolutely dreadful. At the start of my stay it was edible, but in the end I could not face the food. I am absolutley certain the left over food was put out for lunch/dinner or both. It was awful. Everyday provided for consumption:- rubber meatballs, roast potatoes that were ready for mashing, and more than often warm salad. The food was also very salty. Definitely the worst feature of the hotel.
4 - Lack of available spirits at the bar. If you don't drink Brandy, Ouzo, or Raki you were paying for spirits. Terrible choice. Also the cocktails were quire pricey, a minimum of 5 euros each.
5 - Reception staff were very rude. They would go out of their way to be difficult. A lesson in customer service would be beneficial.
6 - Poolside snacks. Often left over ham and cheese from the continental breakfast, and cold pizza, which to be honest was the best food provided at any time.
7 - Cleanliness. With the exception of the reception and main bar, the hotel was always dirty. The poolside bar should be closed. Disgusting.
8. The A La Carte menu was incredibly overpriced, for what I'm sure would have been terrible food given the state of the buffet menu.

Overall, I was for once looking forward to coming home, which is a terrible feeling since Agia Pelagia a place we love. We have visited Agia Pelagia before, and absolutely fell head over heels for the place. We will be coming back, but not to this hotel whilst the service is so awful. Definitely one to stay away from.

The mix of people was fairly balanced, the were English, Germans, French, Danish, and a lot of people from the Balkans. Most of the staff were from here also. Everyone seemed to get on very well.

This is not something I have not done before but due to our experience and taking into account how difficult it is in today's economic climate to save for a holiday feel that this may prove a benefit to future holiday makers. We are not fussy folk or normally complainers but the good points were out weighed by the bad ones.

Positives
1. Basic accommodation but clean.
2. Most bar / restaurant staff/ Animation team {espeacially Barbora pool bar and Metro entertainment } very helpful, pleasant and hard working.
3. Receptionists informative and helpful. {managers however appear to have had a personality by-pass, lessons in the art of smiling needed}
4. Plenty of sun beds
5. Great for parents with teenagers, there's nowhere for them to vanish off to.
6. Good mix of diiferent nationalaties

Negatives
1. Two many steps hilly and quite remote. Recommend hiring a car. {we did, by day 3 going stir crazy. Glad only there a week.
Bus service only to Iraklion, twice a day 9/10 am return 1.30/3.30, journey time around 1hr. { you need to purchase your tickets for this at the reception 6.40euro return}
Around a 20/30min walk to the local village Agia Pelagia, shingle/ sandy in parts beach, great for snorkelling. The sea clear but rocky under foot.
Wouldn't advise walking back from here when dark, Taxi 8/10 euro's.

2. Food!!!!!!! After all this plays an important part of your holiday.
First 2 days fine, not great but not to bad. A meat dish, fish dish , veggi options, but repetative. We think the owners may have had a pig farm and a salt mine, pork {in one guise or another 5days out of our 7} and everything was terribly salty, we also found this eating out.
We also noticed that children were not catered for at all.
Meat reused the following day although turned into something different normally a minced meat ball or stuffed into something.
Breakfast same most days, just egg changes from fried to scrambled.
Fruit juices are more like our cordials, very strong and sweet.

3. Drinks......................Very limited, beer gassy, weak and we found gave us a bad stomach.
Peach/cherry liquerers, sweet sickly, local cheap brandy? Raki or Ouzo, wine which is absolutely awful, red palettable when a splash of sprite is added. Drinks when purchased beer 3/5 euro's gin, vodka, bacardi, cocktails etc around 4/ 6 euros. Decent Wine varied 11/20+ euros a bottle.

4. Snacks round the pool, extremely poor, small square like pizza which is cold and small hard rolls with the left over spam ham and cheese from breakfast.

5. Pool size rather small for the capacity of the hotel. No little tables to places drink/ ashtrays, consequently rather a few nub ends under foot. Not enough bins.
Would also be an idea to put in place guide lines about glasses around the immediate pool area. On several occassions we saw people either being past their drink into the pool or placing their glass on the edge whilst dangling their feet. There were many children playing so had a glass been broken this could have proved hazordous.

6.Items like spades, buckets, inflatbles etc purchased locally are expensive{ ie bucket and spade you can pay 7/9 euro} Actually most things are ott, one young family had to pay 15 euro for 24 nappies and 2 jars of baby food.

7. The a la carte restaurtant is part of the bar balcony, 3 or 4 tables sectioned off with rope. It serves I presume the same food as the main restaurant but waiter service.
All the time we were there and talking with other guests who had been there for a couple of weeks, the facility was not available.

Tips
Exchange your cash at the hotel best rate, when we were there 1.11, no commission. In Iraklion best we got in the banks was .88 + commission

If you can hire some form of transport a great advantage. Rethmeyon lovely town and prices alot cheaper. Nice little coves and beaches close by.

When eating out the local house wine purchased by the carafe was fairly priced and not to bad.

The waterpark ok but needs abit of money spending on it, very hilly and spaced out. Not very clean. Drinks and food very expensive. 21 euro if you get there youself, 31 when booked through hotel but do this the day before you want to go.

Give yourself some extra check in time for your return journey, airport system is designed chaos and we witnessed several people that due to poor information had missed there flights.

We have been to other greek islands and really enjoyed them, we feel that maybe we booked the wrong area to have stayed in, as the more we went towards Hania the better we enjoyed it. I had been to Crete 20yrs ago and feel it has lost alot of its appeal and quaintness. Unfortunately, even with all its hertiage this is one we will not be rushing back to.
From speaking with local people in business they have had a quiet season but charging excessive prices and ripping tourists off isn't going to rectify the situation, because people are not going to return.

We got back today from our 10 night stay at the Blue Bay resort. We stayed in one of the "bungalows" which are actually just seperate blocks of rooms. It was actually quite pleasant to be away from the main hotel and it was literally a two minute walk to the main building. Our separate pool area was immaculately clean and the pool was great. The location of the hotel is ok and the views are superb.

The bar/restaurant staff do work rediculous hours and it seems as though the managers do very little apart from walking around looking miserable and offering very little in customer service. The rooms were kept clean but are by no means 4 star. Sometimes the music in our bungalows bar was played quite loud until past 1 in the morning which got a bit frustrating at times. The food was actually pretty good if you are not too fussy although children were not particularly well catered for.

Having stayed all-inclusive in Crete before the most dissapointing thing about this hotel were the drinks. The only spirits available all-inclusive were a very weak and cheap brandy, Raki and ouzo. No whisky, vodka, gin etc. The wine was also poor quality so the girls in the group ended up getting decent drink from the local supermarket so they had something enjoyabe to drink. When we asked the managers about this they simply stated that it tells you about the drinks on the internet and had a generally poor attitude.

The hotel is situated a pleasant 20 minute walk from Agia Pelagia which is a lovely little bay with great swimming and snorkelling. We enjoyed a couple of meals out in the evening as well as a few lunches and they were all delicious and good value (4 mains and drinks for under 50 euros)

Overall we enjoyed our stay but the attitude of the managers and very poor quality drinks being supplied left us slightly dissapointed. Its true you get what you pay for but we have had better for less.

I booked this holiday for me, my wife and 2 year old daughter. On arrival at our 4* hotel we where farmed out up to top of a 200 meter steep hill into a small room with no air conditioning. When I contacted reception I was informed I needed to pay 3 Euros a day for the privilidge. I then had to cart my family up and down the hill 4 times a day for meal times and then for an ice cream which they only served free at the main pool bar. Their are no lifts down to the main pools so a barrage of stairs await you in order to get to pool level. The all inclusive consists of poor local lager and wine and if they run out during the day its tough luck until the following day when they re-stock. The bar snacks include a bowl of dry cheese and ham sandwhichs and cold cheese and tomato pizza every day no variation oh and these where just left standing on the bar everyday in the seering heat. The alleged childrens club which was advertised in the brochure was open for 1 hour in the whole week. The attitudes of 80% of the staff especially the snotty nosed cow on reception stunk and there attitudes daily to any quandry you may have was "COME BACK TOMORROW". Unless of course you where wanting to spend your hard earned Euros then they where happy to help. The food was shocking Meat balls, meat balls oh and occasionally meat balls. Nothing at all on the menu for my 2 year old daughter to eat so we resorted to walking to the local shop to buy crisps to feed her on. On departure our taxi turned up to take us to the airport (organised by the hotel) with 2 passengers in it. As a result we couldn't get our luggage in. A second taxi was ordered by the cab company and we where told to wait a further 20 minutes. When the taxi didnt show my wife asked for clarification from the staff and got told "WAIT OUTSIDE ITS NOT OUR PROBLEM". Over all this hotel is a 1* shack hosted and run by a bunch of goones. The only positive was the rooms where cleaned and the bar maid Marta was very pleasant and friendly. Overall please heed my warning and stay away from this hotel as you"ll only be dissapointed.
