My family and I weren't as excited as normal for this holiday as we had read so many bad reviews. We have never been to Greece before so we were slightly anxious especially when some reviews said that it was in the middle of no where with not much to do. What really concerned us though was the all inclusive package. When we booked our holiday we were under the impression that all alcoholic drinks were included but it was only a few months before traveling and after reading lots of reviews that we realised that the only spirits included were raki and ouzo. My mother in law even rang our travel agent to check as she couldn't believe it. This didn't bother me too much as I don't really drink spirits but all the adults in our family love drinking vodka so they even considered cancelling or changing our holiday. In the end we decided to go but took some of our own spirits (vodka, Malibu and martini) as we weren't sure if there would be supermarkets nearby.
We were so glad we didn't swap our holiday or cancel because we had a really good time. Our party included myself, my husband our 3 children (age3, 7 &10) my mother and father in law and my husbands sister and partner. We arrived on Tuesday 6th August at around 4.00. We were greeted by friendly reception staff and our cases were taken to our annex as it was a 5 minute walk down a hill. We were pleased with our accomadation as we had also read lots of bad reviews about the annex's but they were perfect for us as we were on the ground floor so it was perfect with having a young child. we had a terrace instead of a balcony with beautiful sea views, infact wherever you are in this hotel whether its the pool, bar or restaurant there is always a beautiful panoramic view. We read that air conditioning wasn't included in the annex's either but we were lucky as the previous guests must have paid for it and never turned it off so we got it for free! This was the case with most of the guests but unfortunately my sister in law and her boyfriend weren't as lucky. There was a large fridge/freezer in our room too. Our room was in a great position, we were a few minutes from the main pools and outside bar but we also had a another pool at the side of our room. It was like having our own private pool because no one ever sunbathed there so its ideal if you wanted it peaceful. We spent a lot of time round the 3 main pools though as the kids loved going down the water slides and playing with the friends they made. There are also two more pools in another part of the hotel (this is 5 minutes up the road) and another bar. I don't think we would have enjoyed staying in that part though as its a bit out of the way from the main pools, bars, restaurant and entertainment.
The restaurant is buffet style for breakfast, diner and evening meal and although its not the best food we've had we never got bored of it and there was plenty of choice. There is food available at the outdoor bar (pizza's and baguette sandwiches) not much choice but the pizza was nice and we normally had lunch in the restaurant. kids enjoyed getting ice cream and milkshakes. There was a drinks machine that had tea, coffee, hot chocolate etc and they brought cake out at 4.00 which was really nice. I mostly drank red wine but it was more like rose and wasn't very strong so I often bought some wine and cava from the supermarket and kept it in our fridge. The children enjoyed drinking kids cocktails and the other adults enjoyed drinking raki cocktails. We paid for a few cocktails that included other spirits. All other spirits were available but you had to pay. When we asked the bar staff why they said vodka used to be included but the Russians were drinking them dry. The hotel décor is lovely and all the staff were really friendly. The entertainment was really good and our kids made lots of friends. We made some really good friends too. guests were from all over the world but mostly a mixture of English, French and Russian.
The spa is really nice and I even treated myself to a facial and body massage which was lovely. There was a price list in the room which was quite expensive but the beauty therapist used to stand outside the restaurant at breakfast and diner and hand out paper with daily offers on (so you could get 2 treatments for half the price).
The closest beach was a 3 minute walk down a steep hill which was fine for us but my mother and father in law sometimes found it hard walking back up. There is a free bus to the beach and back but we never used it as it seemed pointless for 3 mins and we like walking. If your not mobile then its not the best place for you. There were lots of other little beaches within 10 minutes walking distance and the main town of agia pelagia was a 20 minute walk away. There is a lovely beach and promenade with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants. There was plenty for a family holiday as we wouldn't want it too lively with young children. There are lots of lovely walks with beautiful views. There are even a few bars shops and restaurants at our closest beach so only 3 minutes away. We went there one night and there was a beach party too. We also enjoyed the pool partys, we were swimming in the pool and going down the slides at midnight! the pool was even warmer then too.
The weather was lovely, very hot but you didn't feel it because there was always a breeze. I think that's because the hotel is on a hill and so close to the sea.
Overall we had a really good time. It wasn't a perfect all inclusive package but we made the most of it and the views and people made up for it. We would definitely go back to Greece and even back to blue bay as we have such fond memories.

Arrived home on Saturday the 10th August after two week all inclusive - i have a good honest account of my and my families experiences whilst we were residents in Blue Bay. They say that first impressions last and how delighted we were when our transfer mini bus pulled up at the front door at 9.30 pm Friday the 26th July. We were greeted by a wonderfully welcoming receptionist who couldn't ve been more helpful and courteous, the foyer was enticing and spotlessly clean with a refreshing breeze blowing through it. Unfortunatley we arrived after evening dinner had been and gone, we were offered a cold plate in the restuarant which was gleefully accepted. After we had devoured our meal we went back to reception where our room had now been allocated and our cases were carried up to our room. On opening our room we were delighted to have not one but two air con units (one in each room) the room was basic but exceptionally clean - however the crowning moment was when we opened the doors onto the veranda and were overwhelmed by the view from and size of our veranda - we were located directly above the main bar in the hotel and had a panoramic view. Admittedly there were 93 steps from our room to the pools but as an ardent dog walker a few steps were never going to get in the way of enjoying our time in Crete, the steps were soon forgotten about when sitting on the balcony surveying the vista drinking a metaxa and coke. The staff especially the animation staff were great fun with special mention to Edit and Ben (Bens first days was when we were holidaying here (he soon picked things up) Kadar the ents manager is a legend - he always is in a good mood and his catch phrase "I love my job" will be remembered by many for a long time. Special thanks also to Stella and Lucas in the resturant Patti (now in Poland) both Dimitiris at the pool bar were all really focussed on being hospitable and they too were only too willing to help make our holiday a truly memorable one. Now onto the less brilliant partys of Blue Bay, despite being advertised the Kids Club was non existent, the guest from the former Estern Block countries take some getting used to (or at least there lack of manners and greed), the all inclusive (drinks) finishing at 11pm is just too early, there were only a couple of nights when we could ve done with a few more drinks following a resonably funny show, the greek night was a desappointment and to me it only served to make the hotel loads more money and didn;t really help English Russian relations (it caused a near stampede when food was announced as ready) The Soviets didn;t throw themselves into the evening entertainment either, i supose that standing in bread queues for many years deprives one of ones sense of humour.
In summary Blue Bay is very very clean, the staff to a man are great, lots of stairs, food was slightly above standard, some of the other guests lacked manners, we had a great time, beware the chlorine in the medium sized pool my kids' skin suffered (they were in it for 12 hours a day though) animators were excellent and good fun, evening shows were a good laugh, we met some good people.
In Summary

Room Tip: Try to get a room on the top floor of the main hotel - beware the beach bungalows are a bit detached...

Spent 2 weeks at the Blue Bay Resort at end of July 2013 - wont be going back!

Please do lots of research on this hotel before you decide to go there on holiday.

Positives:
- Lovely setting - wonderful views of the Med and the hills - great sunrises and sunsets.
- Some staff lovely - thank you to Michaela and to Stella - your welcoming smiles were a pleasure
- Complaints such as problems with basin, additional pillow request attended to promptly
- Annex pool is mostly quiet and pleasant. Pity some nationalities are not very congenial when it comes to noise and diving in the pool

Negatives:
- VERY uncomfortable beds - narrow, short and hard - didnt have one decent night's sleep - had a big impact on the holiday.
- Wifi rarely works properly and very slow when it does - problem for me as I intended to work while away - proved to be a nightmare
- Shower stalls made for midgets
- Air con - very noisy - almost to the point of having to switch it off at night
- Food - mostly bad - although the salads and the fruit were always fresh and appetising. Often canteen type food and usually luke warm or cold - although the room became unbearably hot. There was always plenty of food.
- MIdday snacks - pizza stone cold
- One or two staff appeared to dislike their jobs and were vocal about it.
- in the Annex where our room was situated - there was a lot of noise from the staff accommodation which is close by
- drinks part of all inclusive package were very poor - soda stream type soft drinks. Beer was OK, wine was not great.

Other comments - either negative or positive - depending on point of view!
- Lots of stairs and hills - not suitable for someone with disabilities
- Closest village is a good half hours walk away and it is quite a tough walk - there is a bus however. There is very little to do around the hotel - restaurants, night life etc.
- Very few English speaking people at the hotel - differences in cultures are not always pleasant! Also - doesnt feel very Greek
- Hotel is large and spread out into 4 buildings - we were in Annex which I think was best for us - less people about.
- Bungalows - no idea why they are called bungalows - they are rooms in smaller blocks away from the main hotel.

Good points: The rooms are basic but clean, there is air conditioning, we had our own private pool, there's free drinks, and buffet, the staff are very nice.

The not so good points: The hotel in itself is fine, a bit remote so be warned you will need to rent a scooter/car unless you don't mind 'cardiac hill' and other such mental hill climbs. We rented a quad for 4 days. Didn't mind walking too much.

The free drinks are very limited, the beer was crap and smelt of rotten eggs, and the soft drinks were really cheap post-mix imitation, and anything else you had to pay for including WATER at €1,60 a LITRE. Surely as a human necessity and since we paid over a grand, water should be free, no?
The free buffet.... ah yes, the place where OFFAL is served. They get in all the cheap off cuts of meat and turn them into god knows what, including liver that was so tough and full of grisle and veins. There are some nice parts of the buffet don't get me wrong, but avoid the meat!!

Entertainment: Ha well, 90% of holiday makers at this resort are Russian, so too are the guys who do the evening entertainment. It kind of reminded me of my GCSE Performing Arts practical exam where we had to write and perform our own musical. The set was interesting to say the least. Anyway, their kids were entertained, while parents sat around drinking crap beer. We avoided it after the first night. CRINGE!

The telephone in our room wasn't working despite speaking to reception 3 times. It was never fixed. Ermmm there's no mirrors in the Spa, so if you're having a wash after a stint in the gym or after being in the sauna, you won't be able to see or do your hair.

If you can make your way out of this resort I would totally recommend doing so. There's a few lovely beaches around, that you can access easily (again by renting transport of some kind) and lots of lovely restaurants. Snorkelling is well worth a go, and in Agia Pelagia beach you can rent boats, pedalos, plus rides on donuts etc. It's very relaxed and also no Brit tourists. Most beaches you will find Greek families. Russians mostly stay on the resort. And they speak good English too if you don't speak Greek.

Room Tip: Side view bungalows have own pool, and away from all the noise.

where do i start, when my wife and i arrived we were put in someone elses room with all there stuff and stincking of smoke, the porter then decided to remove some of there stuff, comical. anyway on going down for breakfast unless you wanted chips or you were a russian then choice very very poor, as they only catered for the russians as they were the majority. just weighed myself and have not put a single pound on in weight, say no more. we knew about the drinks choice but again unless you like beer, poor white wine and red wine or ouzo and raki, you had to pay, we asked why red wine was cold and it was because most people like it like that, fresh orange juice in the morning would cost you 1.90, they had a greek bbq on fridays which was 15.00 pound each, indoor pool and saunas etc you had to pay for too, we had a twin room , beds so uncomfortable. food was not very hot either, we ended up going out for meals and ended up spending a fortune, pool entertainment very poor, night entertainment very poor, so all said and done this is by no means all inclusive, beaches very stony and slippy when entering water, i could go on all day!!! if you would like to know more then please don't hesitate to contact me via email which is markwainwright69-9@hotmail.co.uk. this is a 100% honest reveiw.

I booked this holiday for myself, partner, and 6 year old son - mainly swayed by the price! The hotel itself was great! Our room was really spacious and clean - maid service 6 days out of our 7 day stay. There was always something to please all of us from the buffet style dinners, and my son loved the pool bar snacks - endless ice creams, pizza and cake! The only let down was the location. There were no shops or bars to walk to. There were two small beaches / coves down very steep sloping roads, which had a couple of shops. But other than that, nothing! So night times did tend to drag a little with a 6 year old in tow (the hotel entertainment was rubbish!) The hotel staff were all lovely and very helpful.

So, all in all, a lovely relaxing break, but if you not for you if you prefer a change of scenery one night.
