“A very Special place”
Reviewed May 11, 2013

We enjoyed a couple of days in one of villas. The setting is beautiful and the hosts are truly amazing, very welcoming and made our stay more enjoyable. We had an excellent dinner at the restaurant which offers stunning views over mountains and towards the sea. I would most certainly stay here again and can only recommend this accommodation.

The villas are lovely in a beautiful setting, hosts are warm and gracious. We were 2 families together in 2 villas and it was just perfect. Kids could play outside easily, the setting is quiet and safe, and there is a friendly dog to keep them company that they loved. We had some quite chilly days so we used the fireplaces which was great. Weather was varied (April winds alternating with some warm beach days) and there was lots to do either way.

Room Tip: Villas are the same - you can't go wrong as they all overlook the mountains and the sea.

This is a lovely set up.
Setting couldn't be matched - high in the mountains with view of sea.
Can be windy, but that's Crete for you - probably welcome in the summer.
The most welcoming hosts I have experienced, warm and very helpful.
Marcos is a fount of local advice and knowledge and went out of his way to help us.

Wonderful days, nice food, great apartment! Good starting point for excursions to the beach, to other citys or to the mountains. A stroll to the village of Achlada is also very interesting. The hospitlity of the owners is supreme, from tips to a nice talk and a morning coffee... Dining together was a treat!
In April it was too cold for the pool, but the kids enjoyed playing with the water anyway.

Room Tip: The villas are all equally nice!

I spent a week at the end of October with my two boys, 3.5 and 6.5. The idea was to store some sunshine and Mediterranean warmth before going back to Europe and its gray winters. Although in the mountains - which makes it a great place in the heat of the summer for sure - Mourtzanakis Residence in Achlada is close to the sea: you wake up in the morning and find a beautiful view on a luxurious Mediterranean nature: olive trees and the sea.
Beaches are 10 minutes driving from the hotel. One of them, Agia Pelagia, is just perfect for small kids as it has a natural rock that protects the shore from high waves. Most shops and restaurants were closed as it was the end of the season. This, in my opinion, gave the beach the peculiar charm of *the good old days", when everything went slower and was smoother. The kids spent hours playing on the beach. The first days were real summer, the next ones were cooler and windy which gave the beach a strong nostalgic atmosphere which I enjoyed very much. The kids missed playing in the sea but the sand gave them great pleasure too.
I strongly recommend another beach, way less busy, 10 minutes from the hotel as well, called Ligaria.
Marcos and Smaro, the owners, are amazingly friendly people. One feels at home on holiday. The kids were totally free to run around, play with the kittens, play football with their son Valeri, spend time in the shared dining room where they could play and read. (They have a nice library and many games).
We definitely had a great time at their place, left with the sadness one feels when one leaves people and places one knows will be missed. We will certainly come back, insha'allah!

This hotel really showed me the meaning of the great Greek hospitality I have heard so much of. The owners Marco and Smaro Mourtzanakis are two wonderful people, they are great hosts with great knowledge about the country and will assist you to any question you ask. I strongly recommend you dine with them as it is always great to eat dinner on a full table with other guest and having a laugh, and eating the delicious mouth watering Greek food gives you a great way to experience Crete. I strongly recommend this hotel to any person who want to enjoy their holidays in Crete, I had an amazing time with my family and my children really enjoyed the company of their 14 year old son Valerianos. Overall I had an amazing time thank you so much to the owners of this residence i will be coming every year!
