I am from Austria and I’m used to mountains and lakes, but this lake is particularly beautiful. It’s a lake straight out from a fairy tale. I was impressed from the first moment on – the color of the water, the mountains surrounding the lake, the trees, the tiny rowing boats and paddle boats on the water,… it’s one peaceful place. No words can describe how beautiful it is.

We travelled with our dog to the hintersee for a family walk. There were plenty of car parks around the lake located relatively close to the lake and it's services which included restaurants, toilets and boat rentals. The land around the lake was well kept with stunning views from all sides. The lake was very clean and some areas were suitable to paddle in. The walk around the lake is very easy and the paths are very accessible making it suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. I can imagine that the lake is still nice to visit and walk around in bad weather but one complaint would be a lack of bins - especially with dogs or children in nappies it's pretty grim to carry waste around. All together I would say the Hintersee is definitely worth the visit, it's much less busy than the other surrounding lakes and the views are as immaculate.

We decided to walk up to the Hintersee, and were not disappointed after a gentle 6 kilometer long walk.

The lake is beautiful, framed on all sides with magnificent mountains.

There are boat rentals, walking trails, parking if you drive up, and a public WC at the west end, as well as two or three cafes. Be warned, these can fill up fast on a nice day.

Go early.

This is a hidden paradise. A beautiful small lake with small rocks to climb, a beautiful iceblue creek and a fairytale-like forest, perfect for exploring or maybe finding a quiet spot for swimming og lunch.
Tip: the water is cold and the bottom is rocky. Wear beachshoes for a more comfortable experience, if you enter the water.

It's a small lake and easy to walk around. The lake itself is nothing special but the mountains surrounding it are impressive. Berchtesgadener Land has much more beautiful lakes than this one.
