I could already visit Versailles once so I was curious about this castle. Well, the guide shows you not many rooms that are looking like the one in Versailles and then u can see the castle just like bricks and nothing else because he didnt have money to finish it. I must admit I was disapointed by this castle. Too short and few rooms to see. Better to enjoy walking around and in garden for free or eat in restaurant and finish with buying some souvenirs. Definitely dont need to go inside again.

Herrenchiemsee has numerous sights with the Royal Palace, the park and waterworks, the museum and the two galleries in the Augustinian Monastery what remains is impressive and ostentatious. Regular ferries out to the island depart from Stock, Prien's harbor. A horse-drawn carriage (€3) takes you from the boat dock to the palace itself. Most spectacular is the Hall of Mirrors, a dazzling gallery where concerts are held in summer. The Palace impressed us very much, we liked it more than Versaille in France, even had time for a short walk in the park. The weather was cold and sunny, so we enjoyed our trip to Chiemsee very much!

Wonderful copy of Versailles and impressive to wander round both the completed and uncompleted parts. A few words of warning though - the steam train was not running when we visited despite having checked the timetables. This was because of major track repairs which I think will last to next spring. The alternative is 20 to 30 min walk. Also the ferry only runs every hour outside of the Summer season and hence to visit the palace which is a further 20 minute walk from the ferry stop on Herrenchiemsee island involes a whole day visit. However the Augustinian Monastery on the island is worth a visit as it contains an impressive Bishop's Hall and two art exhibitions. Also the nearby Frauinsal island is worth a visit for the scenary and a relaxing meal at the one pub on the island.

We took the boat to Herrenchiemsee. It was fairly obvious that the next place to go was the ticket counter for a guided tour of the castle. HOWEVER, no one told us where the castle was. We walked up a path to a grey building and chapel and then to the restaurant. In the restaurant we asked someone where the castle was, that is, about a 10-15 minute walk. The grounds are beautiful. There was a horse drawn carriage which we thought we might like to take back after our tour, but it was no where in sight.
Our young woman guide rushed us through the rooms, pointing out one or two items. She didn't seem to know the answers to questions that were asked and didn't point out any of the paintings. If you have been to Versailles, you probably know more than she did.
Also, her voice was not projected and her English, while good, was not easy to understand if you were at the back of the group (where talk people usually stand).
There is so much more that could be said. Perhaps there are a lot of summer visitors and they choose to rush them through, but we were there on a beautiful fall day.
A storm came up and we had to get back to the dock. I doubt that they stayed within number of passengers allowance since the boat was packed. The option was for us to all wait in the rain and lightning on the dock...
My recommendation is that if you want to spend a day on the grounds, the ride over is beautiful. I am sorry that we didn't eat lunch there, but if you have seen Versailles, don't both. You can read about King Ludwig.

We visited July 2012. I planned a self tour of the Castle and we used our 14 Day Castle Pass to enter. We were staying in Munich and I had booked train tickets in advance of our trip and these included the ferry ride as well. We caught an early train from Munich to Chiemsee Hbf where we caught the steam train to Prien Stock ferry dock. We boarded the ferry and rode across the lake to Herrinsel Island.

This is Bavaria - so the lake is large and surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. We had an app on King Ludwig ll, his family and his castles, using this and simply reading the information displayed, we wandered through the magnificant castle and later the vast grounds. We finished with coffee and cake in the restaurant while once again admiring the views. On our ferry ride back to Prien Stock we watched a magnificent storm roll in across the mountains in the distance. Another steam train ride and then the local train back to Munich. A cheap, fun and educational day out.

Trains from Munich run on time, are comfortable, clean and safe - train, steam train and ferry all met with little waiting time and we had no trouble exchanging our tickets or finding where to go. The castle is wonderful, is well signposted, has excellent information available and is setvin beautiful grounds. A great day out.
