“Adequate, but lacking Provencal charm”
Reviewed September 13, 2013

This is an adequate hotel, with exceptionally friendly service. It has something of a motel feel about it, when one expects, in a small Provencal village, more charm.

Rooms are boxy, and, frankly, a little shabby, and public areas, though brightened with a little superficial country kitsch, aren't too comfortable. Dinner involves massive amounts of unsubtle food, and breakfast is help yourself, with a particularly noxious hot dinrks dispenser.

All in all, nothing much to recommend this hotel, other than very pleasant staff.

We were staying near the village of Le Thoronet and based on reviews had decided to have a final day lunch at Le Tournesol which was identified as a new Restaurant in the village. However, the owner stated that he could not entertain a party of seven because he didn't have enough plates!! Respect his view and glad he didnt try and overreach himself with a small kitchen but can anyone afford to turn away 250 euros when running a restaurant. There was only one person sitting at the tables at the time.
This led us to the l'Abbaye Restaurant which seems to go under two names, Le Restaurant de Le Thoronet being the other. The menu looked classical French and we were not disappointed. On the menu it states please do not cause offence by asking for well done meat which delighted our family from the outset, being rare meat lovers. The meat was superb and the burgers melted in your mouth being extremely rare shredded beef. Creme Brûlée was also excellent and some good wine on offer which you would expect.
There have been mixed reviews on the staff and I can see what some people may have found, the staff were pleasant enough but based on other places during this holiday, they would not win any awards for their welcome or service but I have seen worse. Overall a very good last lunch and we departed back to our Villa for a long and relaxing sleep.

The hotel is just a Michelin one house hotel, so we didn't expect much, but it was just fine. Not posh, but very pleasant and well-kept. Our room is actually two -- a very large room with a large bed and a second room with three twin beds. The people at the reception desk were not exactly charming, but they were polite.

We ate dinner outside, our first on this trip because of the cool weather, and it was a really excellent meal! Slices of scallop with greens, followed by sautéed veal chop with morels and potatoes. Chevre with cooked onions on it. Molten chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream -- just terrible!!! This turned out to be one of the best dinners we had in our month in the south of France!

When we looked through the Logis book this place is listed as a single chimney and a single marmite pot..not right! The website correctly identifies it as a 3 chimney and three pot.

It is a modern building with very good sized rooms with excellent air con. The hotel is set back from the main road through the town in a quiet residential location. There is a nice refreshing (sic cold) pool and sun terrace to the rear which is shaded by surrounding trees.

On arrival we were given the disappointing room that the restaurant would have a limited selection that evening because of a fire a few days previously and that we would have to have breakfast in the restaurant. In neither instances did this detract in any way from our enjoyment.

Our room was spacious with plenty of space for our luggage and the bathroom was well appointed with a bath with powerful shower over. As said above the air con was great....simple to operate and noise level barely detectable. The double bed was large and comfortable with plenty of pillows and we had an excellent night's sleep.

Breakfast was a standard buffet affair with coffee from a filter coffee machine.

It is clearly a popular place for those on adventure holidays and the town is quiet with its own wine co-op.

We were really happy to find this place and will certainly go again.

A good hotel in the var countryside. Rooms very good but no balcony but with air conditioning.
There is an outdoor pool with loungers.
The restaurant food is very good and it is busy at lunch times as well as evenings.
The staff seem very rushed when serving the food and lack the little touches that improve the experience that you expect in France.
Road works outside the hotel and early morning deliveries disturbed sleep.

We were greeted by an unsmiling receptionist - no 'Bonjour', nothing. Extremely disagreeable and unhelpful woman. (she improved marginally during the dinner service - but not a lot) Food was good but marred by the staff - our waiter looked like a nightclub bouncer, plates were slammed down and there were few smiling faces. Room was smallish and basic and possibly in need of some updating, but OK. We didn't use the pool but it looked pleasant, and nice to be able to eat beside it if weather permitted. Cleanliness was not high - our spare pillows in the cupboard had been used before! Basically the staff lacked finesse - were in need of some training in the hospitality industry and in some cases a return to charm school. We would definitely not return.

We stayed here for two nights at the beginning and end of a cycling holiday, so stayed in two different rooms. One was a family room on the upper floor with beautiful views over fields on one side and a vineyard on the other. The second room was a normal double and had a view of the car park. Both rooms were comfortable and clean with well equipped bathrooms with hairdryer and had a shower over the bath but with a shower curtain and wall attachment, unlike any of the other hotels on the tour. This was the only hotel we stayed at with air conditioning and it was lovely to have. Both rooms had a nice, quiet air con unit - I often end up switching it off because of the noise but these were really unobtrusive. This was also the only hotel where we got a wireless internet signal in our room.

Special mention has to go to the restaurant. The menu for dinner was great and when I fancied a plain salad not on the menu for lunch they were happy to make me one. If you eat here you must try the chocolate moelleux. There is nice attention to detail in making the restaurant look good and the food is presented well. Breakfast was good too - buffet style with plenty of fresh orange juice, bread, toast, fruit and little packs of Nutella which was my favourite.

One small downside - like another reviewer this was the only hotel where we got mosquito bites. I guess there is some standing water nearby. Remember to use repellant.

Room Tip: Upstairs rooms have the better view
