Chateau Landreville is a hidden gem in the French Ardennes. My partner and I Are keen cyclists and we found the Chateau a great base for cycling the areas quiet roads and laneways. The area is a dedicated to farming with some fine Wheat and Canola crops being harvested during our stay. We drove to the Champagne area for lunch one day but this is a good 1.5hr drive. If you wanted to spend a lot of time in the Champagne producing area you would be better of staying closer to Reims or Epernay.
The Chateau it's self is a majestic building which has been tastefully restored, the grounds are immaculately kept by Phillippe. Phillippe's wife Umbelina was a most welcoming host and went out of her way to make us welcome. We discovered that Umbelina was born in Italy and we were discussing the poor state of coffee available in France compared to Italy. A few hours later we discovered a fresh pack of Italian coffee left at our door for the machine in our room. Umbelina could see that we were keen cyclists when we returned covered in sweat from our morning rides. She offered us the use of a large screen TV that was set up in a room of the dungeon of the Chateau to watch the Tour de France. It was a memorable experience as a Family friend won the opening stage of the Tour and the Dungeon was so beautifully cool with a very hot day outside.
We chose to stay in a separate Gite on the property overlooking the Chateau as it had the benefit of a self catering kitchen. We are keen cooks and as the restaurants in the area are few and at some distance we stayed in each night and enjoyed the beautiful surroundings.
The kitchen in our Gite was well equipped with every thing you would need to create a good meal. The house is clean and well kept and We would certainly stay again if we visit this area.
It would be difficult to stay at this property without a car.
