“Disappointing”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

We had been recommended this hotel and having stayed at a similarly priced and rated hotel in St Emilion a few days earlier we had a lot to compare. There is no air con, no fridge and no access to tea and coffee making facilities unlike at St Emilion. The rooms are basic and utilitarian. The room was not ready for us on arrival though we were greeted with a glass of fizz and nibbles whilst we waited. One day the room was not cleaned until the late afternoon. There is nowhere to put anything in the bathroom. The bistro and breakfast were good. We do not think it is value for money. We did not complain but I think that they may have been having some problems somewhere as we were given 2 bottles of estate wine when we left. We would stay there again but not at the prices they currently charge.

Dear Sir, Madam,

we thank you for your stay with us and we are happy that our breakfast and our bistro satisfied you. 50% of our rooms are equipped with air conditioning units and this percentage will be brought to 80% in 2013. The Château dates from 1677 and keeps the cool of the night quite well, but this year's extreme summer heat convinced us of increasing the number of rooms with air conditioning. Our gift of wine on your departure was meant to excuse for this exceptional hot summer and see you leave us with a smile. Coffee or tea is served to your room anytime between 8am and midnight, so we do not see the point in adding machines for that. We are happy you think about returning to Château les Merles and we are sure to satisfy you on a next stay with us.

Kind regards

Rainer-Maria Hankel

We have just come back from a fantastic week staying at Chateau les Merles. All the staff were friendly and welcoming and we felt instantly relaxed. The beds were so comfortable (although they are all two singles pushed together rather than an actual double) and a huge bath tub to relax in. The location requires you to have a car or some other form of transport to get around but it is so peaceful. We did not have a single meal indoors but always ate out in the courtyard, shaded from the sunshine with big umbrellas. We will definitely be going back soon!

This picturesque chateaux is located in the countryside surrounding Bergerac, far enough to feel completely removed from civilisation, but close enough to pop into town should one want to. The chateau has been lovingly renovated and some of the communal parts are truly stunning. It also houses two restaurants, serving affordable cuisine that is certainly amongst the best we tasted on our trip. A pool, tennis courts, golf driving range and golf course provide plenty of other things to do when not eating or relaxing. However, other parts of the hotel, and particularly the rooms, are a quite serious let down. Having seen some of the negative opinions of the rooms from reviews on Trip Advisor, we upgraded to a Deluxe Double room to try and avoid this and were surprised to find it still came with twin beds which even when pushed together as close as possible, had a gap that one of us actually managed somehow to fall down during the night. This was a flaw picked up by many Trip Advisor reviewers and even Mr and Mrs Smith themselves, why they do not correct this, I have no idea. The room was also very sparsely ‘decorated’ with basic furnishings and complete with a giant wet room adorned with cheap white tiles which were dirty and limescaled. The room had very few of the features that would be expected of such a hotel and the room environment was not helped by the fact it was not cleaned until 5pm. A cheap UPVC sliding door to enter the room and a noisy, archaic, choking machine masquerading as an air conditioning system completed the picture. Would I recommend the hotel? No. Would I stay again? No. The building itself is impressive, the food exceptional, but for 200 Euros per night, there are far better experiences to be had in the Dordogne. The food itself and the staff serving it are 5/5, so definitely come for lunch or dinner, but don’t stay!

Room Tip: The Double Deluxe rooms were 20 Euros per night more expensive than the standard doubles, but were n...

We had a wonderful 3 night stay at Chateau les Merles at the end of June. The grounds, the rooms, the food and especially the staff was close to perfect. Initially things did not start off well - there was a booking mix-up with our rooms. It was caught before we arrived, and the hotel went overboard to fix the issue, upgrading our rooms, and "comping" our first dinner in the bistro. It all worked out beautifully.

The people who work at the Chateau - management, wait staff, kitchen staff, all are very warm, very friendly, and most speak several languages. The rooms are as pictured on the website and in TA photos - very well designed, terrific amenities, very clean - and priced very very reasonably you feel you are getting good value.

The location is a pleasant 45 minute drive from the caves at Font de Gaume - and perfectly fine for visiting Sarlat and Domme. And finally, there is the food. In the Dordogne, land of duck and nuts, the limits of the local cuisine can sometimes be boring. The cuisine at Chateau les Merles is very good - it mixes tradition with lighter, more "global" food, which makes for a very welcome change and flexibility. Breakfast and dinner in the lovely terrace courtyard will remain a highlight of this two week visit to France. We can't say enough about how much we loved Chateau les Merles - a lovely fantasy of a French country hotel.

Room Tip: Staying in one of the "villas" was terrific - but all the rooms are good. We loved the two...

My husband and I broke up a journey recently to spend the night in this
most attractive property. Our room was spacious and gave out on to a terrace,
which was ideal as we were travelling with our dog.
Beds were comfortable, bedding crisp and clean.
We had a long, lazy aperitif sitting in the attractive courtyard outside the
Hotel entrance, and then chose to eat in the Bistro. We were delighted
with the wonderful meal we had.
As the Kitchen is open, you are able to watch the Chefs at work. Our
meal was delicious, we chose the local wine to accompany, which didn't
disappoint.
I would heartily recommend this Hotel, even if you're not golf players,
as it's lovely. We'll be back.

Room Tip: Think about this location if you want a combined golf holiday

This is a lovely hotel with its own excellent restaurant . The ambiance is great. It all beautiful and spacious and mostly entirely comfortable. The food is the icing on a beautiful cake as it is superb. THe dinning area and hotel and just so beautiful .

We had , I think , room 2 with its own outdoor space and it was great though I do have a couple of strong complaints. The space in the lovely room and especially the bathroom had not been made without ANY PLACE TO PUT ANYTHING DOWN. That is a real over site. You need space to layout your things in the bathroom and some space in the room to lay things. There was none. The bed was god and all else very nicely done.
The other complaint is the pool, right outside our room, but I could not use it as the steps to get in were so huge that my artificial Knees would not allow me to use the pool. I was heart broken. I swim in all kind of pools all the time and can manage any pool ladder of normal device .
Otherwise it was a perfect stay and the food and wine is just as good as it gets.
We will go again.

In 6 weeks time we will be getting married at Chateau Les Merles, and our family and friends will be spending 3 nights together at the Chateau drinking their exquisite wine and eating the chef's fabulous a la carte cuisine. After viewing over 20 chateau's in France we knew the first time we saw Chateau les Merles it was going to be the venue where we would get married. The location in the heart of the Dordogne is absolutely stunning.
The beautiful newly renovated rooms are very comfortable and have been decorated to a verfy high spec.

The service and the friendliness of the staff on our trips to Chateau Les Merles has been first class and it will be hard to beat, but I am absolutely sure when it comes to our wedding day I will be proven wrong as they pull out all the stops to make our day perfect.
A special mention to Lilian, the Chateau's wedding planner who has been efficient and has looked after us very well.

We will update everyone after the wedding on just how special our day was. We really can't wait!

Sarah and Paul :)
