Everything about our stay was great. The food was organic and fresh, the kitchen was always impeccably clean. We requested low sodium food (my wife has high blood pressure) and they prepared every meal to our liking. A special thanks to the chef!

Cindy, one of the office personnel was always cheerful, helpful and sweet. The employees helped us with a smile...they were were well treated and love their job and came in with a great spirit. The manager is great with the staff.

We highly recommend La Cusinga! It was like paradise.

The views of the ocean were remarkably stunning, the atmosphere peaceful and the food fantastic. The quiet of the setting was only broken by the sounds of nature. The facilities were spotlessly clean. The staff of this rustic eco-lodge was very helpful, polite and went out of their way to assist us in any way they could.

La Cusinga is a beautiful lodge located high up along the coast of Costa Rica. We would only be staying there a couple of days but never expected the experience we had. Our rooms were separated from the others and overlooked the coast. We could see some of the surrounding property and the ocean. The room was not what you would expect from an eco lodge. They were basic but very nice. We had only been there an hour or so when we had our first encounter with the wildlife. A resident coatimundi came by to eat the fruits of our cashew tree. He would become a regular, frequently stopping at our tree on his daily rounds.
Meals are included and between specific times. No alcohol. If you can stop on the way there or have transportation, you could get some drinks and snacks for the other times during the day. The kitchen will keep your drinks cold for you. Although there is no menu, everyone gets the same, the food is all local and organic not to mention delicious. The variety of the food offered will most certainly appeal to most people.
There is a path down to the beach but not an easy one. You will work up a sweat getting back up to the lodge and may want to check into the tides before going. You can also walk the paths around the property to see what you can find. You can go surfing nearby, or you can just hang out on the hammock and relax looking at the view.
Our first night was broken by the sound of the Howler monkeys very early in the morning, but they seem to stop by 6 am. After that, it wasn't as much of a surprise and we could sleep better. We really enjoyed knowing that wild monkeys were there and saw a least one more species of monkey during the day in the trees near our room. For us, the wildlife was the attraction to the area and we were not disappointed.
Overall, we thought this was a great place and, if we had the chance, would certainly return.

My husband and I chaperoned a senior trip to Costa Rice. La Cusinga accomodated us wonderfully. They had 2 group rooms: one for the girls, one for the boys and a shared large deck for the them to hang out in. We were the only ones there. The grounds are absolutely beautiful and the people were wonderful. We had a pretty good dinner on location (it's pretty isolated) as well as a decent breakfast. We all took a short hike to a small waterfall and the kids had a great time there. There's plenty of hiking and the view from the deck was incredible. I think we all wished we had been there for more than one night.

La Cusinga is a magical place, from the 180 degree view of the ocean on the horizon to the magical rainforest sounds of tides, monkeys and birds from our cabin, I felt that I was as close to tropical nature as I could possibly be without wilderness camping. The opportunity to see toucans and howler monkeys seems unparalleled. The peaceful energy from the staff and intelligent layout of the grounds creates a serene mood. Access to the beach is ideal, and the swimming hole is like Eden. The organic, creatively prepared food and the flexibility of the chef made mealtimes lovely as well. This is my favorite spot in Costa Rica.

  • Liked — the location: blending subtly and sensitively with nature
  • Disliked — difficulty in reaching it, but of course, the isolation makes the location less crowded, which I prefer

We were surprised at the rustic accomodations in the Las Gemelas cabins, but it was clean, the staff was VERY accomodating, and the gourmet meals were superb! The natural setting can't be beat- the views from the open-air lobby are amazing. We even enjoyed wildlife viewing during our meals and waking up to the howler monkeys! Plenty of tours to do in the area, and great hiking on the property. A walk on the Garlic Tree Trail and a swim in the natural waterfall pool are a must for every visit. Very highly recommended!

The La Cusinga setting is one of a kind. The lodge building and cabins are beautiful in their simplicity and the lodge serves as a focal point for the area and sports a wonderful view. There is a refreshing aliveness about the surroundings. Plenty of wildlife provide chances for close encounters with several species of monkeys, kuwatis, and many birds. The beaches are wonderful, uncrowded yet accessible, and provide ample opportunities for swimming, surfing, and other shore side activities. Hiking trails radiate out from the lodge and lead to several beaches and the National Park. Built on a foundation of sustainable subsistence the lodge remains true to its values while providing a comfortable, refreshing, and unique experience for its visitors. The staff is always friendly, the place is kept meticulously clean, and the food, although simple, is fresh, flavorful, filling, and locally grown. There is plenty of fruit, juice, and water always available. Far from the sounds of civilization and the pressure of our complex, technical lives La Cusinga is a feast for famished souls. It’s a place to rediscover the beauty of our world, to reconnect with nature, reorganize priorities, and reinvent yourself.
