“Our Favorite Place in Costa Rica”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 1, 2012

We stayed here four amazing nights! It was amazing! The staff was absolutely the nicest and most helpful anywhere - not just in all of Costa Rica, but anywhere we've been. The grounds were gorgeous - out of this world! The food was the best food I think we've had on any vacation! The rooms, I hate to sound like a broken record, were the most amazing we've ever stayed in! I cannot say enough good things about La Cusinga! We loved that they were a true ecolodge - not just on paper, but in reality. The cabins were built from sustainably-harvested wood and local materials. The food was made with produce grown on their farm. They had a beautiful walk to the beach, a natural pool, a yoga platform overlooking the ocean, nature trails through the tropical forest. There was not enough time in the day to enjoy all they had too offer. It was truly a magical experience! We hope to return...

La Cusinga was full when i tried to book, and so we reserved in Uvita itself. Stopping in the hotel in Uvita, we realized we did not want to stay there in the dry dusty heat so close to the highway and other people. We stopped into La Cusinga and as luck would have it they had a cancellation. We stayed four nights which was perfect. It is a moderately steep ten minute trail down to the ocean but worth it as it accessed the most pristine private beach within the national park with forest right up to the edge of the beach. There were howler and white faced monkeys to greet us on the way up the trail - look up or you might miss them. The toucans and their smaller cousins the cusingas put on a spectacular sunset appreciation show - don't miss it! Amazing diversity of birds and wildlife. There is a shared fridge where guests can keep a few beers or a block of cheese and crackers - don't keep food in your room or you'll be overrun with ants. They have thought of it all, what with a take a book leave a book shelf, the hammocks, rocking chairs with PICTURE PERFECT VIEW 180 ocean and offshore islands, wifi only in the lodge - thank you for NOT having wifi in the rooms - it's just too tempting. The food is pretty good, some grown right on their farm. I would say that while they asked about allergies and food preferences, it is a group meal; be very clear if have a severe allergy (ie I am allergic to eggs, and they offered me pancakes with "just" a few eggs). Ask Sergio for the farm tour - it's a highlight if you're a permaculture person like me. There is a small swimming hole and lots of trails to hike. Surprising, but there actually aren't many public hiking trails in the Uvita area so it's great to stay somewhere that has them. It's a huge property with a yoga studio, group rooms and the guest rooms are really inviting and rustic with the natural materials. It totally made our two week trip to have time here. Oooh, and at low tide check out the cave in the beach rock. We went in early March and there were no biting bugs 95% of the time, just lovely cool breezes (the only time I was bit was on the farm tour to see the cattle, chickens, ducks, pineapples, tilapia, tomatoes and much more). The ocean must have been 86! The waves are strong and there are some hidden rocks at high tide - get the lay of the land on the beach at low tide - wouldn't put very small children in the ocean here but older kids could boogie board. Great location to get to the marine park beach, Uvita tourism, Osa Mountain Village zipline/eco farm tours and explore the more rustic south coastal area. Try the local joints for ceviche. After sitting around in the forest watching the monkeys in the wild for hours here, it was a letdown going to the overpriced crowded Manual Antonio with its monkeys used to tourists though the beach is calm and fantastic there which made it worth it. This is the real Costa Rica you've dreamed of, don't miss La Cusinga.

" Stopping in the hotel in Uvita, we realized we did not want to stay there in the dry dusty heat so close to the highway and other people." it does describe what we are not :o) we are close by but not in the middle of things! we are very private and one with nature! We are glad that you did drop by and we had room! thank you for your great comments.... i love each and every one of them...

" They have thought of it all, what with a take a book leave a book shelf, the hammocks, rocking chairs with PICTURE PERFECT VIEW 180 ocean and offshore islands, wifi only in the lodge - thank you for NOT having wifi in the rooms - it's just too tempting." We try to make it as relaxing and welcoming as we can, but to make sure you are part of nature and not another visitor that enjoys the room, watching the news back home, checking your internet all night... while you miss the whales, the monkeys...

thank you for getting what we are about and sharing your experience! Great photos!!!

When we turned in the drive we started giggling --you've got to be kidding! This was just the kind of Costa Rican experience we were searching for. This place is magical! Little cabins with porches equipped with a wooden chairs and hammocks beconed us to sit and enjoy the magnificent view of the ocean. The rooms are clean, comfortable with great airflow. The grounds are beautiful.. The food was amazing--we still dream of the red snapper! And the private trail to the beach is incredible. It takes you to a quiet jungle-lined beach with a samll cave to explore. On the way back we had monkeys playing overhead in the canopy. We are definitley coming back and bringing our kids-they have a perfect cabin for families. Very friendly staff. Felt good to support eco-friendly accomodations-the entire place is self-sustaining. You must go!

LaCusinga was "a little bit of heaven!" The only thing I didn't like there was when we had to leave. The rooms were very spacious, comfortable and clean. The views of birds flying over the treetops and the ocean were spectacular. We also enjoyed being able to hike on a beautiful trail down to the ocean from the property. Serge took us on a night hike the first night we were there and it was awesome seeing and experiencing a different world at nighttime. We loved waking up in the early morning to the sounds of parrots and howler monkeys and watching the birds from our deck. The food served was very good and natural plus the view of the ocean and birds while eating was fantastic. It was wonderful staying at a lodge that is actively involved in preserving nature, wildlife and the environment. Thank you, Serge, for making our visit so special!

I had been to Costa Rica twice before but to the more popular, northern areas. This trip to the
south Pacific Coast was the best yet. La Cusinga was a gem! The accomodations were clean and
comfortable, the ocean views were magical and the hiking was great. The staff was attentive but
not intrusive. And the food was also excellent with fresh vegetables and local ingredients. Be sure
and take advantage of some of the nearby tours for whale and dolphin watching.

There aren't many choices in Uvita for lodge/resort with family (we have two girls, 9 and 12). You won't be dissapointed by La Cusinga.

The grounds are beautiful, the food darn good, and the views were amazing. Seeing toucans was really fun. The family room was nicely built and clean. The trails and private pool are great.

It's far enough from town that you have to get the full board - especially with kids. The food was a little inconsistent, especially the timing. On night they pushed the dinner time forward 90 minutes, which wasn't what we wanted. And the coffee wasn't very good. They don't sell beer or soda which is so strange.

But much of it was fantastic, and they tried to accommodate my picky eater.

A little more of our La Cusinga visit is here on our blog.

La Cusinga is a wonderful surprise on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica. We stayed here for 5 nights and couldn't be happier. The staff were incredibly helpful around the lodge and in planning tours for us. The food was spectacular, including fresh squeezed juices every day and all of the food is either grown/raised on property or purchased locally. The Inn offers wonderful views of the ocean and very fun forest trails complete with all types of wildlife. We would get up early, tour around the area until about 2:00 and then settle on to the deck with a good book and wait for the afternoon rains.
