The photos on the Whales and Dolphins website paired with the $185/night pricetag led my boyfriend and I to believe that this would be a gorgeous, beachside resort. It is neither of these things.

It is nowhere near the beach it would probably take about 30 or 45 minutes to hike down the mountain and walk all the way there), and the road to hotel is up a 45 degree incline, one way, very scary road. Don't even think about taking this road if you don't have 4 wheel drive.

The views are stunning and the restaurant staff was great, but our enjoyment of the hotel ended there. Our room was a total dump: broken coffee pot, drapes that didn't close, uncomfortable bed, SAND IN THE SHEETS, broken telephone, etc.

Furthermore, the female manager we dealt with was horrible. She promised my boyfriend a major price reduction on our room and then literally hid from us whenever she'd see us around the lobby. When we finally came to check out, we saw here hide again, and she made the poor girl at the desk tell us that it was only a $15 discount.

I would just like to add that my boyfriend and I generally hate to complain about service or anything else, but this place was just outrageous. If they lowered their prices to $50/night, then it might be appropriate to stay there.

We stayed at Whales and Dolphins in february for three nights. We were agreably surprised by the hotel! The views from the pool and bar are really spectacular! Pool is great, the rooms look brand new, beds are confortable, there is a mini bar, sat tv, efficient AC and a balcony with excellent views where you can watch the sunset. We ate at the restaurant and it was excellent though a bit pricey. I have to thank the staff at tbe bar and the reception for their help. They arranged and rescheduled our tours for us (dolphin tour and Corcovado)... On the negative side, the hotel is located on a hill, the road is OK but you need a 4x4 to get there. While we were there they were paviing parts of the road, maybe access will be easier in the future. If you dont have a car, I think there is a shuttle service down to the tourist information center. One thing, if you book there, make sure you are going to be in the upper building. The rooms are down from the restaurant, pool, and reception, so there are lots of steps to the lower building and the views are not going to be as great as in the upper building...
We would definitely return to the hotel.

This place is nice and is only going to get better. The view of Playa Ballena is absolutely amazing and the rooms are nice. The restaurant is very good and after speaking with the manager there are plans to build a new pool with a new tile deck, too. The best part was the wildlife. Frogs and birds serenaded us in the evening and morning.

When we arrived in April 2005, there was one other couple in the entire hotel. They left the next night, and we had the whole place to ourselves.

From our balcony, we could watch wild Toucans and Wild Parrots flying about. We could also see the ocean, and the sandbar/rocks which look like a whale's tail.

The room and furniture looked like brand new. Not only was the TV "remote control", but so was the air conditioner. There was a safe in the room for our valuables.

The couple who ran the place at that time were from Brazil I believe; he was a teacher, and had published several books on world travel.

The told us about a local farm where they give tours, so we got up early one morning, ate breakfast at the farm, then we were guided by the owner's son as we walked a narrow path through the hills. We saw and heard Howler monkeys, saw cutter ants, and a dark green frog which is poisonous.

Although we were the only ones there, we were served a large complimentary breakfast every morning.

There are several nearby beaches, and most of the time, each was deserted when we were there; we had the whole place to ourselves.

To us, it was just about the perfect vacation.
I would have rated it a "five" if it had not been for the tiles coming apart on the very beautiful pool.

My wife and I just returned from the Dominical area where we stayed a night at Whales and Dolphins. We had a great experience there and enjoyed our stay. I visit the Dominical area often but this was our first time staying at the hotel. We have visited before for lunch and the view. From the pool, restaurant and bar area is a fantastic view of the coast, non better in Costa Rica. The pool does need some work with their tiles, but it did not make our experience any less enjoyable.

The rooms are in fairly new condition with A/C and balaconies that also have great views. We were very satisfied with them, but didn't spend much time there as the pool/bar area is where we hung out. We had two meals there and they were great too. The staff was very nice. I understand that the hotel is under new managment, so this may explain why we did not experience the same things as previous visitors.

All in all, we plan to stay there again on our next visit.
