I had a great first surfing experience at Uvita Surf Camp and they are so confident that you will get up on the board that they won't charge you for the lesson if you don't get up. After about 20 minutes I ended up getting virtually every time so it was a lot of fun and I received a lot of good pointers from my instructor Diego who was excellent. Besides taking surf lessons with Diego, my wife and I took a stand up paddle board tour through the magroves which also was excellent. Book a day or so in advance as they are popular and it's a relatively small business.

It took a little effort to find the tour location at Uvita SUP & Surf (SUP=Stand Up Paddle) because it is a very small shop. Our guides Carlos and the other guy whose name started with a D had things ready to go for the short 3-4 minute trip to the beach. We were in a two person ocean kayak while each guide had a single. The beginning of the trip was a row out to a formation of rocks and a sand bar in the shape of a huge whale’s tail (Ballena Whale’s Tail). Since we were going against the seas and there was some wind and choppy water, the paddling was a bit laborious, but we managed just fine.

Since a storm was sneaking in on us, the seas started to chop up pretty good. This was especially true after we started snorkeling. We were in the water near the rocks that formed one fluke of the whale’s tail when the rain and lightning started. The visibility of the reef was extremely poor due to the storm. That combined with the lightning forced us to the sand bar a little sooner than planned. We had a snack of fresh mango, pineapples, and apples in the pouring rain. The rain was coming down on us pretty hard but that really wasn’t an issue; the lightning on the other hand was a little un-nerving at times.

The ending of the tour and our favorite part was when we got back to the beach. We took the two single kayaks out to do kayak surfing. It was really a lot of fun even though we took a few tumbles in the surf and ended up with some salt water intake and sand in places where sand doesn't belong. The last ride in on the waves was successful for both of us with neither getting flipped over.

After getting back to the tour shop we rinsed off with fresh water, thanked and tipped the guides, changed to dry clothes and were taken back to the hotel by the tour shop owner. It ended up being a great day for one that started with no plans. Great shop and staff. Next time we'll do the surfing.

If you want to have a great day, with a great guide, go to Uvita Surf Camp!! Tito spent the first part of our day explaining and teaching on the beach, what we would do, how to react and how to be safe while we surfed and had fun. We put his teachings to work in the water and we had simply an amazing day.

My wife and I came to Uvita (staying at Rancho Pacifico) for our 20th wedding anniversary. We had never surfed before but it has been something i wanted to do for about 35 years. We gave it a try. My wife was worried that it would be dangerous or she would not be able to get up, but by her third wave, she was surfing! I was too...

We surfed for about 3 hours. It was an amazing experience and something we plan on continuing when we get back to the states.

A group of us traveled to Costa Rica for a college reunion and were looking for one fun activity during our stay. We had a three-hour surf lesson with Uvita Surf Camp - Diego was our guide - and we had a fantastic time. Diego was great company, but serious about his job teaching us first time surfers and he spread himself evenly across a range of abilities. The setting on Playa Uvita was gorgeous. I would highly recommend Uvita Surf Camp.
